Episode 412
There’s No Place Like Home, Part 1

I was filled with an incredible sense of sadness as I watched the Oceanic 6 reach “civilization”, hold their press conference and get on with their lives. I kept thinking of those that have been left behind, of those who died and of everything that these people went through on that island. I even felt for Kate and Jack. It was an emotional moment.

On the surface, it seems that it was just a setup to the finale – which it is really – but so much happened in this episode. We got some really good answers, but as always, there are new questions.

The future flashes this week belong to the Oceanic six as they reach a Military base in Hawaii. They are reunited with their loved ones and hold a press conference, after which Sayid is tearfully reunited with Nadia.

Some time later, Hurley arrives home to a surprise birthday party. The rest of the Oceanic six are in attendance. Hurley’s dad gifts him the car they had been working on prior to the crash. Hurley panics when he sees his cursed numbers on the cars odometer and runs off.

Sun, meanwhile, uses her settlement from Oceanic to purchase the controlling share in her fathers company. She blames him and another unknown person for Jin’s death, and once she has had her baby, she intends getting involved in the business.

Jack attends his father’s memorial, and is later approached by Claire’s mother. She tells him that Christian had been in Australia to see his daughter and that she (the daughter) was also on flight 815. She tells him that his sister’s name was Claire.

Meanwhile, back on the island, Jack and Kate head off to look for the helicopter. On the way they meet Sawyer and Miles. Jack and Sawyer eventually continue on the path to the helicopter while Kate retunes to the beach with Miles and Aaron.

At the beach, Sayid eventually returns and it conveniently coincides with Kate’s return as well. Daniel, who realizes that they are all in danger, offers to take the losties off the island and to the ship. While he does this, Sayid and Kate run off to catch up with Jackass and Sawyer.

They are eventually surrounded and seemingly captured by Richard and a group of Others. Jackass and Sawyer find the helicopter. Frank is handcuffed to it, and he tells them that Keamy and his men are heading for the Orchid to capture Benry and kill whoever he’s with.

Benry, Locke and Hurley trek through the jungle toward the Orchid. Benry signals the rest of his people using a mirror and they eventually reach the Orchid to find that Keamy and his men are already there. Benry gives Locke instructions and hands himself over, saying that he has a plan.

On the freighter, Daniel returns with the first group of Losties which include Sun, Jin and Aaron. They meet Michael when he arrives on deck to tell Desmond that the engine is fixed. But their joy at having a chance is shattered when they find massive amounts of explosives rigged on a transmitting device.

Wow, what a great episode!! I found it very emotional, for some strange reason.

The key points for the future flashes (and there are many) are as follows:

• Ok, firstly, the story that our six concoct to tell the world is quite interesting. We all know that they’ve said that there are initially 8 survivors. According to the story, they drift in the water for a day or so until they are washed up on an uninhabited island. On day 103, a typhoon sweeps them off to another island where they are rescued.

It would seem that the public still buy the story that the plane wreckage discovered is the real thing. On the one hand, I understand the big lie – they are protecting either the remaining Losties or the island, or so it seems anyway. It could be that their real story is so incredulous that they fear no-one would believe it, but somehow I doubt it.

They’ve carefully put this story together and have decided that this is what they are going to stick with.

• Sayid is reunited with Nadia and they seem very happy. That is… until an event we all know happens that breaks up this happy union. Poor Sayid – he just doesn’t have any luck with love, does he? He’s lost Nadia, Shannon and that blonde he was shagging in Germany.

• Kate tells everyone that she gave birth to Aaron on the island, and that she was 6 months pregnant when the plane crashed. Why not tell everyone that Claire was one of the 8 that survived the crash and then died? Hmm. I guess I can see the reasoning behind this one. For some reason, Kate assumes responsibility for Aaron. Furthermore, I’m sure that there are legal complications. Aaron would be taken away and given to Claire’s mum.

• Hurley in the future starts having issues very early on. He hears whispers (which were his family outside, I am almost sure) and I almost expected him to see Charlie again. He also gets into a panicked state when he sees the numbers in his car. We all know that he eventually admits himself into a mental hospital. I think that out of all the Losties rescued, it is harder for Hurley than for the others.

The others obviously care for those that were left behind, but Hurley is the kind of person who was possibly more attached to the other losties. Plus he suffers from a guilt complex.

• Jack finally learns the truth about his relationship with Claire and he seems distraught over it. I really felt sorry for Jack at this point. At this stage, we are still not sure what’s going on with Claire, and I am hoping that we eventually find out. In fact, I am going to assume that we do find out, because I can’t imagine that Kate would take Aaron knowing that Claire is still on the island.

• Sun in the future is a kick-ass woman who wants revenge. She holds her father and another person responsible for Jin’s death, and she plans on having her vengeance. I wonder who the other person is. Michael? Locke? Benry??
I’m a bit concerned now, I honestly hope that Jin is still alive……

So, that’s it for the future flashes. Like I said earlier, I was just really sad for these people. Somehow, getting off the island and getting back home and living out their lives is what they had all been striving for since the day of the crash. These 6 have what they wanted… but is it really what they want after all??

If you thought a lot happened during the flashes; it’s nothing compared to what was going on on the island and the freighter. It’s just so much that it’s going to be really difficult to get things straight, but anyway, the key points for Island/Freighter happenings are as follows:

• Benry seems to be back in charge. Jacob may have told Locke that they need to move the island, but he neglected to tell him how. So, once again, Benry is now in control as he seems to know what to do, telling Locke and Hurley that the island moving device is located in a secret underground facility beneath the Orchid (yet another hatch) and that it is a last resort.

Interestingly, it seems that this has been done before. Half of me thinks that a movable island is perhaps one of the coolest things I have every heard of, but the other half thinks that it’s just ridiculous. Seriously, how does one move an island?

• Widmore, it seems, is aware of the island moving device. He sends Keamy and his men to the Orchid to stop it from happening. Has this happened before? Have Widmore and Benry reached this point before?

• This next point has been mentioned in the forum and I now understand what people mean when they say that Locke is underused. Locke has always been a man of action – be it blowing up submarines, killing Others or just beating Charlie up – and here it’s almost as if he is just sitting back and allowing things to be decided for him. But I suppose that is what having faith is all about.

• Benry hands himself over to Keamy, telling Locke that he always has a plan. Now that’s the Benry I’ve grown to love. He’s the man with a plan! I wonder if his plan included being knocked in the head with Keamy’s gun.

• Sawyer is worried about Hurley and he and Jackass set off to rescue him. Here again, I make reference to a point raised on the forum – Jackass and Sawyer seem to be switching roles. Jackass is muttering Sawyer catchphrases – “Son of a bitch” for example, while Sawyer is showing a great leap in leadership and responsibility.

• Kate and Sayid are captured by Richard and a group of Others. I’ve actually missed the Others this season, so it’s really good to see them. Hopefully this means that they (the Others) team up with the Losties to get rid of Widmore’s men. Also, we’ve got to wonder what Benry’s Morse code message translates to.

• Frank really intends helping the Losties. As does Daniel. But Daniel’s intentions are more for the sake of helping himself and Charlotte off the island. But you have to give him kudos for not insisting that Charlotte leave on the first boat trip. Charlotte doesn’t seem to now what the “secondary protocol” is.

• Sun and Jin encounter Michael onboard the freighter. Neither of them is particularly happy to see him. In some ways it’s very sad. Jin and Michael were friends, and here they are – so distant and cold. Not that I blame Jin anyway.

• Desmond discovers that the freighter is rigged with an exorbitant amount of explosives. Oh No! This worries more than moving the island does. I’ve already mentioned that I am scared for Jin and I am hoping that this is not his downfall. We now Sun and Aaron get off the island… what if Desmond got his vision wrong and it is Sun and Aaron that get into a helicopter. I am now seriously worried for Jin and Desmond!

I’m sure I’ve left out so much, but so much happened in this episode. It brilliantly sets the pace and anticipation for the finale next week. I cannot wait!!!!

Interesting Trivia (from this site)

• In the extended version of this episode, on the press conference scene, it is revealed that the other passengers who survived the crash but didn't make it off the island are Boone, Libby and Charlie. This, of course, according to the fake story told by the Oceanic Six.

• The logo for the Orchid in Daniel's journal confirms that the Orchid is the logo on Ben's parka in the Sahara.

• This episode features the first time Richard Alpert has been seen on the island since the season 3 finale.

• Sawyer tells Jack that he doesn't "get to die alone", taking from Jack's often said phrase "Live Together, Die Alone".

• Ben's mirror morse code message translates to "seise" ("seize", presumably).

• The Oceanic 6 landed at Kalaeloa Airport, home of the Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, as indicated by the plane's markings and the distinctive air traffic control tower.

• "Membata," the name of the island Oceanic claimed the Six lived on, is Indonesian for "doubt" or "uncertainty".

Ooh, I forgot how kickass Sun was in this episode. Truly awesome!

I don't know who the other person she thinks is responsible for Jin's death... could be a number of people... could even be one of the Oceanic survivors! Hmmm... I'll have to think about that.

Great recap Six, lol as usual

Fingolfin you were mentioning a Frozen Donkey Wheel or something around this episode, care to elaborate on that one

Argh!  Let me apologise for all the spelling errors.
I've edited this thing about 15 times now, and I am still finding spelling errors.  Sorry, everyone.  My spelling really, really sucks!

>>could even be one of the Oceanic survivors! Hmmm... << Fin

I wondered if that could be true as well.  Maybe she blames Jack - hence the tension between them.  He did seem anxious about what she would say at the press conference.

Alexino: the FDW is at the end of the season ;)

Thanks Fin.

Well we know we cant have the boat blow up just yet, Sun is our money back guarentee, and I dont see Keamy and co coming back to the boat.

Maybe we had some kind of mass killing that takes place in the near future (5 days).

One thing that got me thinking was how Benry signalled the folk at the Orchid station.
who was he signling?  If it was the Others, they could have told him about Keamy.
If you need to signal the station before approaching, how did Keamy get there?

Then again if you read the trivia and what the morse code was, it gets even more confusing!

Great episode.
I am so eager to see the final next week, should be great.
they are setting it up in such a way that you just know its gonna be good.

I also wonder who the other person who sun holds responsible for jin's death is.

I dont think its Jack she holds, unless he does something major stupid.

Im thinking he signalled the others as Six said, whats got me most interested about this episode is the fact of moving the island and also the function of the Orchid.

YAY next week we finishing it off, and a double dose too :)

I just loved Sun's line deliveries in this episode, especially in the plane: "We ARE in shock, Jack[ass]!"  Hee.

Did anyone notice that Sayid was wearing a wedding ring at Hurley's birthday party?

Brian Ortner, Ben was signaling the Others, but the Others weren't at the Orchid station.  They were likely at or near the so-called "Temple."

I like the title of the episode. Its either sarcastic or a sort of pun that the island now feels like home.

Some of the scenarios feel predictable to me though. The Kahana will blow up I believe.

04 Jun 2008 02:27

Yeah, Coop, I get what you're saying.

We know that the six get off the island, and with all that explosives, the Kahana just HAS to blow up - you can't not blow up the Kahana.  Think of the big BOOM!  (hmmm.  I think I watch too much Mythbusters!)

But I think that while some of the scenes may be predictable, we'll still be blown away.

>>I like the title of the episode. Its either sarcastic or a sort of pun that the island now feels like home.<<

Yes!!!! I agree 100%.

We also know what the Heart Monitor and thingy on Keamy's arm is connected to.

I think for me Hurley's island style party is the metaphor for you alluding to.

Yeah gotta agree with you on the Kahana blowing up, but we know that so long Sun is there its likely to stay in tact, I doubt she will survive such a blast while being on it.  If she does I then think her second one blamed is dear ol Mike

I think that rubber ducky going to and from the island is gonna the hero in this story, the helicopter was ignored in the rescue flashes

Hey Coop

I saw something very intersting on E! channel by mistake as they were previewing parts 2 and 3. So at this point every option to leave the island is still viable

Little aaron is so cute! :)

What a great eppy.  Loved it.

Coop - great observation that the thing on keamy's chest controls the explosives on the ship.

i can't wait for the finale.
