LostEpisode 413There’s no place like home, Part 2Firstly, apologies that this is a week late. I had an exam last week, and unfortunately, this just had to be the lower priority. Lost Season 4 came to an emotional end week. I say it was an emotional end because at the end of it, I didn’t know what I felt. For once, I knew what I thought… but what I felt about the 90-ish minutes of the craziest TV we’ve ever seen... well, that I still had to sort that out.
And I am not quite sure I have sorted it out. It was such a packed episode; the story did not slack off at any time at all and literally kept me at the edge of my seat. Right from the opening moments when Jack screams to Kate that they’ve got to go back until the closing moments when we finally see who is in the coffin, Lost took us on quite a rollercoaster ride.
Where to even start?? Oh, here’s a good place. Jin! Oh, my God. Jin is dead! I cannot believe it!! In fact, I still refuse to believe it. There has just got to be some way that Jin survived. I’m just going to believe that he somehow got off the freighter before it exploded. Yes. I think that is what happened.
In the finale’s future flashes, we learn how our Oceanic 6 cope with life off the island. Some seem to be doing alright, but at the very heart of them all lies a very deep and dark fear – the fear that they are going to have to go back. Obviously, we know that they have to go back… but I think that they all were living their lives – fooling themselves into believing that they were the lucky ones.
But if you look at the story of the 6, well, we can exclude little Aaron who is just too little to know or have an opinion on anything. Not that his story can be excluded – far from it… his little story just adds more guilt to Kate’s story.
Sayid, as we all know, is an assassin working for Benry. Kate lives in her little world with Aaron, worried (I am sure) that they will discover that Aaron is not her son. Jackass lives out the life of a drunk, alienating all those who care from him. All he knows is that he has to go back to the island.
Sun has her baby daughter and buys out controlling share of her father’s company. She seeks revenge. And finally Hurley, who we know cannot handle what has happened and now resides in a mental hospital and sees dead people.
Not a very happy bunch of people, are they. To make matters worse, they have to lie about people that they have grown to care about, lie to the families of those they have left behind, and lie about where they’ve been and what they’ve been up to.
I think the most important aspects of the flashes are that the person in the coffin is revealed; and that Benry offers to help Jackass not only get back to the island, but also offers to help get the other Oceanic 6 back to the island as well.
Firstly, the man in the coffin is John Locke. Wow. Before Season 4 started, many of us speculated that Locke could be the man in the coffin. I must admit though, that as Season 4 bore on, the possibility of it being Locke seemed less and less likely.
Considering everything that’s happened – John Locke being the “Golden Child” and being so special to the island… well, just what has John Locke dome to offend the Island? Why is he dead if he is so special? And more importantly, how was he protecting the Oceanic six that they now have to go into hiding?
And now, Benry’s offering Jackass to return to the Island. If Benry knows how to get back, why hasn’t he returned? Or, am I just assuming that he’s not returned? He says to Locke that those who move the island can never return. How is he going to convince the others that they need to return? Are Desmond and/or Frank included in this list of those who must go back to the island?
On the island, things have been progressing at a steadily faster rate. But in a nutshell, Jackass, Kate, Hurley, Sawyer and Sayid get onto the helicopter with Frank. Along the way, they need to get rid of the extra weight as they’ve sustained damage to the gas tank. Sawyer opts to jump from the helicopter, giving them all a chance.
Well! Everyone knows how I feel about Jackass. He has always been the most
annoying, self-absorbed
brat on that island. But, the funny thing is that I have never disliked him – until now, that is. I cannot believe that that… infuriating man actually believes that Sawyer “made his choice to stay on the island”!!! Helloooo Jackass, did you witness Sawyer jumping off the helicopter to save your sorry behind?!?!?!
Anyway. On the island, Keamy dies and arms the explosives. Desmond, Sun and Aaron get onboard the helicopter. Michael and Jin are not that lucky. The freighter explodes; Michael is dead. Jin, I’m not sure. I am desperately hoping he isn’t dead and that he got off the freighter in time.
On the island, Locke and Ben enter the Orchid and attempt to move the island. Keamy followed and was killed (arming the explosives). Ben moves the island. Locke joins the Others, now apparently their new leader.
Wow (again. You’ll be hearing that word quite often). They’ve moved the island! Whether it has been physically moved, or moved in time or any other theory you may have remains to be seen.
I’m not going to give you all the whole rundown, as it’s firstly going to take forever, and secondly, it’s been a week since Lost ended. Any true fan of the show would have now dissected the events at least four times over.
In SummationFlash Forward• John Locke is the man in the coffin and he has somehow been protecting the Oceanic Six. He’s also been trying to convince them that they have to go back to the island. Very interesting. Jackass says that the day they left “some bad things happened”. Oooh. What? What???? What happened? Is everyone ok?
• Benry is now going to help the Oceanic Six back to the island. I wonder if they will all willingly go back. Personally, I think that they will. So, what does Benry have up his sleeve that’ll make them think that they have no choice but to go back?
• Kate receives a visit from Claire who warns her not to take him back to the island.
• Hurley is sprung from the mental hospital (where he’s been playing chess with Mr Eko) by Sayid when Jeremy Bentham (Locke) is killed
• Sun approaches Widmore and offers him help to find the island. Why? Is she switching sides or is she just trying to find out if there is a chance that her husband is still alive?
• Jackass gets a visit from his father. Jackass also breaks into a funeral home to view the man in the coffin where he meets Benry.
The Island• On the beach, Daniel tries to convince Charlotte to return with him. Both Miles and Charlotte choose to remain behind.
• Charlotte was born on the island.
The Kahana• Desmond, Jin and Michael try their best to keep the freighter from blowing up.
• Desmond, Sun and Aaron are able to get onto the helicopter before the freighter explodes.
• Michael, moments before he dies, is visited by Christian who tells him that he can go now. Redemption for Michael also came at a very high cost – his life. Why is it that redemption on this show is so high. Charlie’s redemption also cost him his life.
• It appears that Jin is dead (but like I’ve stated earlier… I refuse to believe it)
The Orchid • Benry kills Keamy
• Benry tells Locke that he can leave the Orchid and return to the Others who will tell him everything they know
• Benry somehow activates the Island Moving System and moves the island.
• Benry will now be unable to return to the island.
The Helicopter• The helicopter crashes soon after the island is moved.
• The 8 occupants are rescued a week later by a ship called the “Seacrcher” belonging to Penny Widmore.
• Penny and Desmond are tearfully reunited.
• Penny assists Jackass and co in creating their lie to the world.
• Desmon naturally elects to stay with Penny.
I will apologize now for the disjointedness of this article. It’s been a week and I still can’t get my head around everything that’s happened. There is only one word to describe this finale, and that word is “Wow”!!!!
Trivia (from
this site)
• Each year the producers have a special name for a secret scene in that year's finale. This year's special name turned out to be literal - "Frozen Donkey Wheel", referring to the frozen wheel Ben has to turn to activate the teleportation of the Island.
• In order to help maintain secrecy, two alternate endings were shot. All endings were the same up until the reveal of the coffins occupant. In one ending it was Sawyer, in another Desmond.
• The inaudible whisper that Sawyer tells Kate appears to be "
I have a daughter in Alabama, you need to find her. Tell her I'm sorry".
• This episode features the first instance of a lapse of time during the continuous present-day narrative; the caption of "One Week Later" announces the passage of time after the life-raft crew are found by the Searcher.
• Jeremy Bentham (February 15, 1748–June 6, 1832) was an English philosopher best known for his advocacy of utilitarianism. Bentham's positions included arguments in favor of individual and economic freedom, the separation of church and state, freedom of expression, equal rights for women, the end of slavery, the abolition of physical punishment (including that of children), the right to divorce, free trade, usury, and the decriminalization of homosexuality.
In 1785 he designed the Panopticon a type of prison which allows an observer to observe (-opticon) all (pan-) prisoners without the prisoners being able to tell whether they are being watched. After his death, Bentham's body was preserved and stored in a wooden cabinet; this preserved body, called the "autoicon", has been on display at University College London since 1850, and every fifty years is brought to the College Council meeting where Bentham is listed as "present but not voting."
• Ben blows up the freighter, not caring he killed innocent people, the same reason he gave Michael why he shouldn't blow it up to begin with.
