Story 1:
In tonights first story, we meet Frida and Caroline Sebake, who are sister and mother to Rosinah Sebake respectively. They need help from Khumbul'ekhaya, to help them find Rosinah's child, who was taken by his father, Vusi Mazibuko.
The story goes that Rosinah and Vusi had a good relationship, Vusi was known to the Sebake family, although they didn't know his. When they had a baby, drunkards that they were, with Rosinah being the worse of the two, Vusi decided he needed to introduce Rosinah and baby to his family.
Rosinah's family saw no problem with this, and thus agree to let them go, obviously expecting them to return. And so Rosinah, Vusi, and their son, Jabulani, who was 2 at the time, left to go to Phalaborwa, Vusi's home. However, they never quite got there, well, Rosinah didn't. What happened is that they got to a shopping centre, where they had some alcohol, and Rosinah was apparently very drunk, and Vusi left her, taking his son with him.
That was the last they saw of Jabulani and Vusi. Asking Rosinah about what had happened, she told them she had not wanted to go, but had faith that her man and child would return.
Frida and Caroline
Caroline tells us that although her daughter was a heavy drinker, there were periods when she would cry for her son, and she could see that she genuinely misses him. They also tell us that the last time they saw Rosinah was in August of last year, and on the 14th of December, they heard that Rosinah had been hit by a car and passed on.
We then cut to Phalaborwa, where we meet Violet Mhlanga, sister to Vusi Mazibuko. She actually saw a picture on KK(see how powerful the last part of the show is), where Vusi was with a child, and someone was looking for him. She explains that Vusi had called home and spoken to their other sister, who had no children of her own, telling her that she would bring her a child with its mother. Vusi did eventually come home with a child, but no mother. They asked him about the whereabouts of the mother, but Vusi had no answers. And so the child lived with Vusi's other sister, until she died in 1997, after which Violet took Jabulani to live with him. Violet tells us that Jabulani is a bright child who even has a bursary to help him through school.
Violet Mhlanga
When the Sebake's arrive in Phalaborwa, they are met by Violet, and an interpreter. The Sebake's explain themselves, and how Vusi wronged their family by taking the child having not paid for damages, and not being married to Rosinah. Violet asks where Rosinah is, and when told that she had died, she asks why they waited for Rosinah to die before going to KK, since KK has existed for a long time. The Sebake's explain that they have been looking, with no success, until now. Violet warns that if they have come to fight, it's fine, all she knows is that even if they take Jabulani to Lesotho, he won't speak Sotho, but Shangaan, because that is who he is. The Sebake's assure her that they have not come to fight, but rather to talk and reach an amicable conclusion, which is that when school holidays come, Jabulani can go visit his mother's home, and come back once the holidays were over.
Having agreed on this, Violet fetches Jabulani, whom I had pictured to be somewhat older (I guess the bursary thing made me think of an older child). Jabulani looks like he's a mere 10-12 years old. Violet tells him who these people are, and he says he has always wanted someone to call "Ma", but was content because his aunt has always treated him like his own child. (I was so touched when he said this).
Jabulani Meeting his maternal family
At this point, I stood up to make coffee, I came back, and the TV was tuned to E-TV, as people who don't play the lotto wanted to see the lotto draw. So I kind of missed a bit of the second story, but I don't think it was much.
Story 2:
Although I missed a bit of the first part, it is clear that the woman speaking, is speaking on behalf of someone else. I will call the woman who wrote to KK teacher. Teacher wrote to KK because she is concerned about MaJulia, who is mother to one of her learners. She wants KK to help her get MaJulia home, as she is living with her young son in an unsafe area, she is unemployed, and is ailing. She believes that being with her family will be better for both her and her son, Bongani.
When we meet MaJulia, she seems like an old, sick woman. She lives in abject poverty, in a shack in the middle of nowhere. She get food from her son's school, as she has no source of income. My biggest concern is for her son, who is rather young, living in a situation that no child should be.
MaJulia's home
MaJulia tells us that Bongani is the last of her four children, and all the others are back home. She also acknowledges that she needs to go home, as she is not safe. She tells us that some boys (young boys nogal), would come to her house and rape her on a weekly basis everytime they felt the desire for a woman. She says she used to live with a man who would just allow this to happen, and all this happened, thankfully, before Bongani was born.
Majulia
I was expecting that they would go home, but she goes with KK and her son, to where her other son stays(I might have missed something here, but surely this isn't her home). Her older son is happy to see her, and informs her that he now has a child and is intending to marry soon. He also tells her of the deaths that have occurred and also tells her that her daughter, who had left home in search of her, also died. MaJulia, as Andile later explains, does not show her joy and grief as we'd expected her to because of poverty(I also don't get the logic here).
All in all, her son is happy to have his mother back, and hopes to find a job soon so she can take care of her. I must say, he's a braver man than I.
RevisitAndile informs us that over the next few weeks, they will be revisiting some of the people from old episodes to see how they are doing.
Tonight's revisit was to Pru, the girl who had wanted to confront her parents about her upbringing. I think Toxic did a recap of this one, because I seem to remember reading about it. Pru had been raped as a young girl by a family friend, and her parents were not attentive enough to notice.
On the revisit, I'm struck by how good Pru looks, having shed some kilos(she says she' s gone form a size 48 to a 40...big up girl!).
She also says she is doing well, and although she and her parents have never spoken about the issue since KK came, she has forgiven them, as well as her rapist. What worried me though is that Pru's daughter is living with the parents, the same parents she felt were not attentive...but hai, i guess she think they have changed.
I was just glad to see that she is doing well.
And unfortunately, KK ends with no photos, and we all know why this is my favourite part of the show.
