Special Assignment this Tuesday:
Episode Title: Ashes To Ashes
Date: Tuesday, 1 July, 2008
Time: 21h30
Channel: SABC 3
It is less than two months since the country was engulfed in a rage of xenophobic violence. Already the images of youths fuelled by a bloodlust, looting, burning and killing, are fading from people’s memories. But for the foreigners who survived the attacks, it is something that will haunt them forever.
The image of Ernesto Alfabeto Nhamauve engulfed in flames made world headlines. He became the image that epitomised the horror of the violence. Yet he was by no means the only person to have been so brutally killed. Out of the limelight, numerous other Mozambicans suffered a similar fate.
This week Special Assignment travels with the bodies of murdered Mozambicans, back to their birthplace for burial. We explore the profound impact that the xenophobia in South Africa has had, not only on the families of the deceased, but on our neighbouring countries as a whole.
The show looks at how these events have shattered the idea of our rainbow nation and brought international shame and condemnation to South Africa .
“Ashes To Ashes” is written by Sasha Wales-Smith and filmed by Japan Mathebula and Mandla Mlambo.
