Episode: Pitch Black Afro And Camagwini
Broadcast date: 22 July, 2008 at 18h30
Channel: SABC1
Pitch Black Soul is what you get when mix-masala two of the hippest musicians on the block, Pitch Black Afro and Camagwini.
Pitch Black Afro, with his massive hair and sexy eyebrows (according to the man himself) and his hip-hop street lyrics is a product of urban Mzansi township culture.
Soul sister and jazz songstress Camagwini with her traditional face paint, dreadlocks and mellow music with a message, is another kind of hybrid. Born in Mdatsane in the Eastern Cape, the second biggest township in South Africa Camagwini holds onto her roots, her language, her culture and her memories of growing up listening to the songs of her gogo.
Both artists write their own lyrics and their messages reflect the different worlds they come from.
Pitch Black Afro draws from the melting pot of languages and images found on the streets of Soweto and Jozi. Camagwini looks back into her culture whilst making music for future generations.
Head Wrap finds out what happens when this soul sister collaborates with funky town’s Hip Hop playboy.
