Drawing The Line

Who and How do TV stations decide what the best slot is for a show? Is there a survey or some kind of market research done? I am very unhappy about shows that are misplaced.

I found myself lying in bed on Sunday (27/07/2008) at 12:30 watching such an engaging show that made me wonder why it is broadcast at that time? I loved the format and everything that was on the show!! Why would a show that would enlighten, entertain and engage people be put at such a spot? It has a great presenter, great script and absorbing discussions! I was tuned to SABC 2, Drawing the Line presented by Lebo Mashile.

Drawing the line
Lebo Mashile presents  Drawing The Line

The show is supposedly a “game show” on the SABC 2 website, and I completely disagree with that. That show is far more than a game show and deserves a better slot! The show has 3 rounds; each round is began by actors setting the scene – two teams debate the pros and cons of the sketch, interview the different roles in the sketch, the audience comments on their feelings on the sketch and a fact is sourced and announced from Google (I assume, the net) and the audience vote on where they draw the line. This week they were discussing tampering with DNA, when going through In-vitro fertilization (IVF), either to choose the sex of the baby or eliminate some diseases that can be genetic.

So having issues with the show being misclassified and put on a completely insignificant slot; I checked out the TV Guide and found some disturbing misplaced shows… I discovered that all the channels try to cram all their best shows on Monday and Tuesday. The rest of the week is a case of the people having to watch whatever is dished out. So you end up with “why bother” or “do I really have a choice?” days and watching whatever is on the channel at the time or the least boring (but somewhat entertaining) show.

Who watches that damn Summer Games show on Thursday at 19:30? That slot is perfect for Drawing The Line. Isidee is also misplaced! 18:30 is just unrealistic; some are at gym, some are stuck in traffic or work or getting meals ready for the family…

Muvhango

I know they insist that Genrubbish has us all captivated but is it really the “truth” (true reflection of reality) or audiences just can’t find anything else to watch at that time? How about they put Isidee and Muchango against it and let’s see? I figure people would be having more popcorn Saturday s to catch the Genrubbish omnibus, just as they all miss church for the Isidee omnibus now.

Wouldn’t it be better if TVSA peeps voted what time slot would be ideal or better for a show and were actually taken seriously? I know we are a portion of the society; but we represent a market they need for their shows! Dammit! We even watch Yo-tv!

Anyways, I made a list of shows I feel their slots need to be reconsidered.

Isidee and Muchango to be moved to 20:00 weekdays

RGBSelimathunzi
RGB to be moved to Saturday 18:30, therefore can or combine it with Selimathunzi (What is the difference between the two shows anyways?)
Get rid of the 7 repeats of wrestling on e-TV. Do we really need that many repeats of the damn thing?
Funny games show (Summer Games) must be moved to Saturday afternoon.

That’s my line! What shows do you think are misplaced and where should they go?

Girlfriend, on Friday 8:30 that sitcom is jsut on the wrong time. Wednesday at 8:30 would have been perfect. Those short movies are a bore!

Khumbule ekhaya, they made a mistake by moving it out for 30 min. I just go to bed earlier now as I refuse to watch RGB. It is a waste of time.

Will think of others and let you know

that Sam Cowen show on ETV should be moved to saturdays..the parenting show.

RGB should be moved because it tends to clash with riveting stuff on sabc3....Season 1 was Heroes, 2 the end of 3LBS-don't know what's replacing it but am almost certain it's something i'll want to watch. I hate that KK starts 30mins later as well.

Dr Ramatsesele (sp)'s BONITAS sponsored show should play during week-days..maybe replace Jika Majika or smthng cause it's informative but forgettable.

That Dosto Noge show needs to be advertised more!

Otherwise i agree with some of your recommendations.

nice one Sego,

Dammit! We even watch Yo-tv! what's wrong with that? i cannot live without those lovely kid presenters. I am just worried bout the day Ceci retires.

Sego the Lebo Mashile show sounds interesting and have ignored it becoz of the way she dresses, i flip my channels get a glimpse of her in those warmish outfits and pumps (with her height) and think to myself WTF was she's thinking? i will give it a shot now that you have hinted.

I still dont know which shows should be moved.

I think RGB should be at 8:30 -I now just see the the first story on KK. Otherwise i-Girlfriends could take the 8:30 slot and RGB can take Selimathunzi's slot.

Off-topic. I was soo disappointed not to see Sis'Ribs last night-oh my GAWD.

Nice one Sego.

"I am just worried bout the day Ceci retires."
@ Cnglemom, if u manage to accept Mandisa's retirement, then I am sure u will be fine when Ceci leaves, and she is getting abit too "mature" for Yo-tv *so I guess her reirement is around the corner....LOL*, she needs to phosa intambo to aba Musa, Akhumzi & Karabo, coz they are still very young!!!!

<<Dammit! We even watch Yo-tv! what's wrong with that?>> ABSOLUTELY nothing! I watch it and I feel, tvsa peeps, watch TV (everythang on TV) so we are the perfect audience to do a market research with on what shows need to be moved and what slot would work for what show...

AND I think it's time for Ceci to say G'bye... she may be hanging on to yo-tv when there are shows that are mature that need her talent... Well, I think that Kuli can move over to Motswako (or get a Noeleen type of gig) and let Ceci do RGB....

I was watching In the Public Interest on Sunday, SABC 3, I think at 13:30 and the show is better than Asikhuleme.

29 Jul 2008 01:48

with SABC the are certain predescribed slot for certain programming. For example education has all the super morning slot on on sabc 2 over weekends espcially on saturdays mornings. I dont know how did they come to that conclusion but i wont be surprised if it was thumb sucked and notr market survey was done.
Then theres the idea of competition, the channel put more or less the same shows on the same slot as to compete with what the other guys are offering on the other channels. For example, the soapies all play at 18h30 because they are all looking to get a piece of the pie of the huge chunk that is the soapie market. So if they are to put a different show at say 18h30 on 1 it should be a show that can do better than what the other channels are offering at that slot.
i for one love the short films on 1, some may find them boring but i like the fact that they shw the new talent that is coming through and most are not that good but at least it shows there is still hope in the sa film industry.
but i do believe there is a need for better market rtesearch when it comes to programming espicially when it comes to the SABC and etv.I think the guys on Mnet are spot on

Yeah, that Great expectations show is at the wrong time, I guess they are targetting new moms still on maternity leave, and stay at home moms, which is rather dum.

That Dosto Noge show needs to be advertised more! ]
I agree Tox, that show has a lot of potential, although I think the 6 o'clock slot should be reserved for "reserve shows", i.e. shows that no one really watches, coz ppl are either at work, at gym, preparing supper, etc, at that time.

I love girlfriends, but am never around to watch it, I agree, it should replace those doccies.

I watch Drawing the line  when I remember, it's interesting, plus I'm a big fan of Ndumiso Ngcobo, so it's a pleasure to listen to him.

Who watches that damn Summer Games show on Thursday at 19:30
Lol Sego, if i happen to flip channels and it's on, I watch, it makes me laugh, honestly. I'd like to think i'm too smart to laugh at things like that, but I found myself laughing at Zoolander the movie, so maybe i'm not!

Get rid of the 7 repeats of wrestling on e-TV. Do we really need that many repeats of the damn thing?
Scarp WWE totally! OMG, nothing is more irritating that that show! And to have repeats of amarepeats...eish!

I hate Saturday mornings, the only thing you can watch really is YOTV, since it's all kiddies shows, or some other boring thing on 2. YoTV is the best kiddies show, but I cant watch it for more that 30 minutes! (P.S. But I think i have an illegal crush on that chubby Xhosa boy, eish, i could khulisela myself there...lol!)

Great one Sego.

Personally, any show that is geared for discussion or debate I am all for it. You check Botswana TV from 19h30 to 20h00. There is always a discussion or debate about politics, economy ... The other show that is of interest to me is the Summit channel and CNBC Africa. If you are depressed about your financial situations, these channels might be of help.

I think the guys on Mnet are spot on
You know why Thabang? Because we are paying for a service. Anything less will not suffice.

LOL@ Rene,I heard he used to be one of the kids visiting the show daily and that's how they got him. You should have seen the way he explained it on Noeleen it was hillarious, those YoTV kids are just too good.

For example, the soapies all play at 18h30 because they are all looking to get a piece of the pie of the huge chunk that is the soapie market. It makes sense though the way they compete with each other.

They blacklist u so quick so pay it if even u dont feel like it, a colleague of mine is still going to police stations for affidavits to prove TV licence defaulting isht.

I think the SABC top dogs dont really give isht as to what they give out to the public coz they probably all have High Definition PVR and dont have to deal with crappy SABC.
