ZAKUMI

Our 2010 World Cup Mascot

Having seen all the other World Cup Mascots, and HERE I think Zakumi is cute!

Hope he brings us the luck we need for 2010!
Welcome Zakumi, you rock!

About ZAKUMI

Date Of Birth 16 June 1994
(even though he was only registered in February 2008 with the World Intellectual Property Organization)

The name ‘Zakumi' is a composition of ‘ZA' standing for South Africa and ‘kumi', which translates translates into ‘10' in various languages across Africa.

Zakumi is a jolly, self-confident, adventurous, spontaneous, and actually quite shrewd little fellow. He loves to perform and always follows his instinct and intuition, yet sometimes has the tendency to exaggerate a bit. You will often find him fooling about and teasing people but not in a mean way. He is warm-hearted and caring, and wants to make as many friends as possible.

He loves to play football as it is a great way to connect with others and break down language barriers. He always carries his football around which he will use to invite people to play with him.

Zakumi loves football. At one time he decided to dye his hair green as he felt it would be the perfect camouflage against the green of the football pitch; a bit like his rosette spots are when hunting in the wilderness!

He does have one striking weakness. With all his energy, he needs frequent rests. Occasionally, in-between performances on stage, he may suddenly fall asleep on the spot at the most random times! But rest assured, these are only short breaks that a leopard of his calibre needs to recharge his batteries.

Zakumi posing with Danny Jordan. Apparently Zakumi is a leopard, I thought he was a lion!

Over the last years he has travelled the whole of Africa where the leopard habitat is good (pretty much everywhere from open savannahs, forests, jungles to mountainous areas, even deserts). He has therefore learned to adapt to new environments; enjoying the diversity in nature and people across the African continent

Zakumi's main priority is to turn the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa into one huge, joyful and unforgettable party and show the thousands of international guests the warmth and spirit of the African continent.

"He wants to create a good mood for the fans and raise the excitement for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the first on African soil. He is a proud South African and wants to ensure that the world will come together in South Africa," explained Lucas Radebe, South Africa's football icon and close friend of Zakumi.

Hai, mina I must say I was dissappointed. I was hoping it would be something really creative, and one of the things I was hoping it wouldn't be, was a lion(or a ny wild cat, or animal), or a soccer ball.
It's cute though.

I think its really cute.

According to newspaper report Zaku was born in 1994, the year of South Africa's first democratic elections, Zakumi was conceived by local designers as a symbol of the teenage Rainbow Nation, warts (or spots) and all.

What’s the price tag for creating Zakumi is all I am interested in, the way people are going on about the little mascot you would swear it just won Miss SA or Mr SA or something. It’s a mascot, that’s all, the way Bafana are playing; it’s going to take a million Zakumis to even score a goal.

@Bulz.Lol, all I know is that Phil Masinga was mumbling and sounding scared last night. We were laughing at him thina.

Zakumi looks like a mascot for the Beijing olympics but alas its what he represents that matters so there. I am happy that we have a mascot now we just need a president

On the first pic...the hair looks like afro-dreads.
HJe's a cutie, but i dont think the designers were creative enough.

Ki Zuma...Tl tl tl tl. Zakumi seems to be a symbol of the Zuma era.....

Oh comon guys what is this Zakumi Character going to do about the messed up S.A sport leadership. To me its a waist of time and an excuse to give someone money as always.

Messi
24 Sep 2008 05:12

And again I really dont like the way S.A Soccer does things eg.Izolo apha sibukele imatch ye wafa wafa and you know what i was expecting atleast the standart of our coverage to chance a bit starting from the presenters as much as we dont need them analyzing every detail of the match com on we are watching the match {e Europe ayikho lonto if kuyadlalwa kubukeliswa imatch qha no long discussion between the match and the half can you imagime thabisa spending 15 minutes talking about the same game we all S.Africans watching this is rediculous. Thats why ndisithi soloko kufunwa iways zokupha amantu lemali ifanele uphuhliso , no Papi ngoku ungena kulento ncii.

Brown Shuga
24 Sep 2008 05:18

Zakumi is here becoz of the World Cup not to fix our sports admin problems. That's why he's FIFA's 2010 WC mascot and not a SAFA mascot!

Messi
24 Sep 2008 05:20

Fonidini 2010 is hear because of Safa what do you meean. If there's a problem within Safa dont you this it affect the world cup?

Brown Shuga
24 Sep 2008 05:24

Shame Messi, were u watching the game on SABC1? I didn't experience that problem on SS4. LOL Mpule! A lion doesn't have spots? Hahahahaha my bad!

Messi
24 Sep 2008 05:30

But seriously brown think about it we need to get in touch with what the other countries are doing we cant afford to have these things man tome it's a very low standard.

Messi
24 Sep 2008 05:34

maybe we can also ask the mascot to lead the country.

26 Sep 2008 06:20

Does anybody know Who "designed" this thing, I bet it was Jordaan's nephew. and how much did they pay the people that came up with it? I know that it aint less than a million rands, just not sure of the exact amount, it took these guys a year to come up with daaideng? what a cruel joke, a better idea would have been to make the whole designing of the thing a competition contested by primary schoolers (strictly 6-12yr olds), best design wins half of the money and the rest goes to the winners school. I know they would have come up with something better, even the name Zakumi..I mean come on, better yet we could have saved a lot of taxpayers' money by just declaring Julius Malema as the mascot (who said mascots need to be cute?)

26 Sep 2008 06:28

On the first picture Zukumi not bad,but the colour is too old. He looks retarded.

Eish the last picture is more messed up in a funny way, i think the Lion would be much better, anyway thats my opinion and well done BS in showing the rest of the world what SA is all about. Viva 2010 SA world cup VIva!!!

I think he is a freakin joke!  Just like our government!  We really could have used a bit more creativity...I dont feel "proudly South African" when I look at him!  I am deeply disappointed!
