Jerusalema, one of the best movies to ever come out of SA is our official submission for consideration in the Best Foreign Film at the 2009 Oscars and I'm positive it will get the nod. Don't care about the other 95 countries who are also submitting entries.
I went to see Jerusalema twice! The first time it was to find out what it was about and the 2nd time I went because I had missed the first 15 minutes the first time and I also went to look for goofs. I wasn't disappointed.
I wouldn't mind going out to watch it again but I kinda suspect I'd want to go for the 4th, 5th and 6th time so I'm gonna chill and wait for the "official" DVD to come out. Yeah, it's THAT good!
If you haven't seen the movie, there might be spoilers here so .....
My best moments were during Lucky Kunene's childhood. Jafta Mamabolo did a splendid job and it really makes me proud to know that we have such talented young actors in the country.
I hope he will be alongside Ralph Ziman and Rapulana Seiphemo if we have to go to the Oscars in February.
About the goofs..
They honestly take NOTHING away from this brilliant movie but I thought it would be interesting to chat about them and ask the Academy of Motion Pictures not to to nitpick when making the decision.....
LUCKY IN 1997
LUCKY IN 2007
Yeah, big up on getting it right with the casting because Jafta could easily pass as Rapulana's brother mara people don't age LIKE THAT in 10 years bathong, unless we're talking babies. I'm tempted to demonstrate this point with a pic of me taken 10 years ago vs one taken now but I don't wanna offend abantu abaguga kakubi so I will leave it at that. lol.
If Lucky Jnr was 16, there is no way Lucky Snr is 26! He looks at least 34.
This is Lucky jnr with his best friend Zakes jnr...
This is Lucky with Sithole (lawyer) and his best friend Zakes on his left (our right)
Ja I know people change and stuff but Zakes snr is too dark. When they were young Zakes was lightskinned but 10 years later it's Lucky who's light skinned.. and Zakes ke mnyamane! Haikhona bandla.
What makes their "transition" so questionable is Nazareth...
His character in 1997 and 2007 is played by the same person and the make up artist did an okay job coz there were later scenes where he appeared kinda old.
This scene below is way too hilarious for me...especially that "Hi Jacking" sign because they stood there exactly for that reason!
Oh, and the morale of the picture is to tell you ukuba that cute Mercedes on the right was not yet available in 1997. Same as the gorgeous one they delivered to that guy who bought the jacked cars.
I'm not sure what year we moved from abo OKE (Welkom), OM (Kroonstad) and Number Number T (Transvaal) to bo ma FS and GP and even if we had already changed our car registration plates by 1997 but all I know is that there is no way we could have been on the T's in 1997. Green car's plates TTZ293GP.
What's interesting in Jerusalema's 1997 scenes, is that some cars have the GP registration, while others are still number number T. Maybe that was during the shift...mara T yona...
THE STORE ROBBERY...
Siyaya Hi-Ace Taxi
During the robbery where Nazareth gets arrested and young Lucky shot, Nazi and his crew are using a Siyaya Taxi and shame Siyaya was only introduced in 2001. Ngo 1997 besishaya ngalezi....
Pic was taken in KZN....I suspect!
Lucky, who is shot on the leg, and Zakes manage to get away from the robbery with this stolen beetle. Nothing wrong there...except......
......a scene and a half later, after first saying goodbye to his mom and later girlfriend at the station, he's RUNNING to climb onto the train.....
No hospital visit, we don't know what happened to the bullet and the wound but our man is running after a train! Looking cute too in that red sweater!
After Zakes gets shot....Lucky follows the shooters' car. On FOOT. And he reaches their destination at the same time as them. Okay, no big deal.
What is a big deal is that when they enter Tony Ngu's club, it's night time....
They walk in, start shooting...Tony Ngu is running...Lucky chases him till they get to the roof and voila, when they get outside, it's already MORNING.
Meaning the shootout took the whole night? heheheheheh.
Tony Ngu, the Nigerian from the Ibo Tribe aka Jews of Africa, who escaped discrimination and oppression in Nigeria and came to South Africa, only to find the xenophobic attitude towards makwerekwere.
Well, what can I say, Malusi Skenjana's nigerian accent is as good as mine! The woman who calls in on AK's YFM show could teach this guy a thing or two.
I don't know why they didn't use a Nigerian to play this role, flop flop flop and I couldn't ignore this!
he got cute lips
...and speaking of his lips, there are scenes where he has a little black mark on the right of his mouth and on other scenes the mark is not there.......
Like I said, these little goofs do not take anything away from this movie's brilliance and I really hope those of you who haven't seen it would make a plan to do so because it is something we should all be proud of. Tsotsi is WHACK compared to this movie.
Here's the Official Trailer and yes, you're welcome to highlight goofs in my blog! LOL
