Wow, last Thursday was the most gruelling hour and a half of my life. Never before have I ever been so nervous, so much so my stomach was in a constant knot.
Even a visit to the Principals for slight indiscretion doesn't compare, not even your driving license practical comes close to the feeling we all had last Thursday. Afterall, someone was going home!!!!!
It's amazing how throughout the day and the few days proceeding Thursday I was all calm and chilled, until Thursday morning when I realized there was no turning back. As soon as they do the countdown to the show, it kind of hits you with a bang, the next thing your legs feel like jelly and your fake smile starts quivering uncontrollably as we all stepped onto the dance floor.
We did the Rumba and I was pleasantly surprised at our good scores. We made some mistakes along the way - almost had a speed wobble in the process - but I guess our "Sliding Door” maneouvre did the trick for us and got the judges all excited. We scored 27 points for the night to lead briefly until Tessa and Grant hit the stage with their Quickstep.
Other couples who did the Rumba were Adil and Robyn. As mentioned in my previous blog, Adil redeemed himself to Robyn and the public and this came across very clearly in their pre-dance video, however their routine was not as spectacular as Adil had made out, instead it looked like Robyn was dancing around the brother as he did his “YOGA/ TAEKWANDO” Maneouvre. Am not sure what their scored was, but I can tell you, Adil was shaking like a leaf!!!!
I'm so pissed off at Shugasmakx for exiting the competition so early, he has officially deprived us (Male Celeb’s and the Millions of viewers) of the most gorgeous girl in SCD 5 = Seipati.
On their last video promo, many of you would have seen her a little dejected, believe me, I understand the ladys’ frustration. I've read some blogs where people were complaining about her attitude, it was warranted!!!! She'd done all she could with Shugas but the brother was not playing his part.
For me she was always professional and did her best to get Shuga through the steps, but you can’t blame her if her partner is not committed to the show. Apparently after every training session, Shugas would promote his upcoming album…….so what does that tell you? Shugas was the Baby Jake of Season 5 - let's hope next time round Seipati gets a partner who can go all the way.
Garth and Hayley had a disastrous show, they chose what's ultimately one of the best dancing songs of the 80s, and made a mess of it. Garth was visibly stressed about it through out the day and when it really mattered, it all went wrong for the pair. Even “Cinderella” lost her shoe during the performance.
But what got me was the emotional outcry by Garth after the judges votes came in - Garth made a emotional statement that Hayley was not the one being judged, but rather that he as the celeb, was the one be measured and that his partner is still the best. Hayley cried none stop after that with a rather dejected Granite looking extremely vulnerable.
Hlubi and Khutso sank like the Titanic according to Tyrone, this was an unfair statement I believe, their routine looked so good, and yes, Hlubi was nervous (naturally like everybody) but I believed they pulled it off. They had a difficult time during rehearsal and I think Hlubi is doubting her abilities and should just DANCE and have a BLAST. She also cried for a long, long time!!!!!!!
Rob and Mary - Amazing team. Mary really hit the Jackpot with Twakkie who is currently busy with his own theatrical show at the Liberty Theatre on the Square ( You must go, its brilliant). The brother man even did the splits in mid air, they truly rocked the evenings show.
Tessa and Grant also ruled the floor, after all, they had no excuse, Tessa resigned from her job at e.tv to concentrate on SCD. Since the shows inception, she has been trying to get onto the show. She gets to play with her horse in the mornings for about 2hrs, then spends the rest for her day rehearsing with Grant, and this showed during their performance. I too wish I could quit my 9-5 and just DANCE!!!! Guess it’s nice to have folks and friends supporting you financially in order to realize your dream - TO WIN SCD SEASON 5!!!!
Anele and Brandon aka “Sweeny Todd” due to his scar on his neck, didn't score too well with the judges even though Anele danced her heart out. She is the only person in my books who is doing SCD with the correct attitude and having a BLAST as opposed to the rest us who end up stressed out and too competitive. She has not forgotten about the fun element to the show and hence she is doing great.
Aunty J and Eksteen aka Miami Vice survived the elimination process. For some reason, everybody thought they would go out, but that is until Shugas did his slip sliding away move.
Cindy Nel danced out of time, but that was not her fault, rather that of her coach and partner. Again, her good looks and revealing dress got them through the elimination process
As for the rest of my week, I left SCD around 23h00 Thursday nite and went to the after party drinks at News Café’ in Rivonia, stayed for about an hour and went home for much needed rest, after all I was racing in the morning.
My rally in Bronkhostspruit and Bapfontien area did not start off well, we had issues with the pace and struggled to keep up with the competition loosing almost 40 seconds a stage.
By the end of day one we were lying 5th out of 8 and about 5 mins behind. My team mates teased me naturally about SCD and so did the many fans that rocked up. On Saturday we decided to push a little, but it was too late and we ran out of stage kilometres. We managed to finish 2nd in the end.
Sarah and Eksteen came through to watch on Saturday and she even managed to sign her first autograph to a fan in the stands. It was quite something for her and I'm happy that she experienced that. Unfortunately they were unable to stay long, but her presence was appreciated. Pictures of our car in action are up on
my Facebook profile.
This week I was also invited to the GQ BEST DRESS MALE function at the Westcliff courtesy of my involvement in SCD. Met up with Cassandra and greeted her with my best Barry White voice. I wonder what she will write in her column this week.
Sbu won the Best Dressed male. As for me being inline for the prize, that will never happen, unfortunately I'm not into candy floss coloured suits and weird pointy shoes!!!!! I'm just a jean and t-shirt kinda guy and occasionally I dress up in a tailored suit - if you dont believe me, check out my photos in my facebook profile.
This week we do the Tango, I believe either Adil or Aunty J will be going home this week! Adil has called me three times saying how he is worried about his tango and that he is struggling to get it right!!!!
Till next week, WINK*
