Peter
Ricky tells Peter that Celtic will be playing AC Milan that evening and so the local bookmaker will have a large amount of cash on hand. If Peter helps them rob the bookie then Ricky will give him the box they found on him.
Will, one of Ricky's men, thinks to himself that he's the one who will end up with the cash, even if he has to kill Ricky for it. Peter “hears” this, and comments on it. Will denies saying anything, and Ricky isn't prepared to trust Peter over Will.
Later on, Peter is in the back room trying to make activate the lightning bursts he's created in the past. He's taken his shirt off once again, which makes me wonder if there was a clause in Milo Ventimiglia's contract requiring him to be shirtless in every episode.
He doesn't have much success, and while he's trying, Caitlin comes in. She tells him not to worry about that night as she'll be there to watch his back, although what she doesn't say is that she's got a pretty good view of it right now given his shirtless status.
Peter asks how he can know that he can trust her, and she tells him that she hasn't told anyone what he can do. So it would appear that Ricky thinks Peter is some sort of bad-ass fighter rather than a super-powered individual.
That evening, Peter pretends to be a loud drunk American and distracts the security guards at the bookie's while Ricky and his men sneak up behind them. They tie up the guards and wait for another guard to come out with the money.
They relieve the guard of the money, but he manages to press the alarm. Ricky and his men run away with the money as another guard comes out.
He fires at the fleeing men, but then Peter uses his telekinesis to move the armoured car which was in front of the bookmaker's. The guards are now trapped, and Peter is able to drive off with a very surprised Caitlin.
Back at the pub, Ricky, Will and Caitlin celebrate their success. Their celebrations are short-lived, as Will pulls out his gun and points it at Ricky,
Initially Ricky doesn't take Will's threats seriously, but Peter chooses that moment to enter the room. Will turns and shoots Peter before pointing the gun at Ricky again.
Will is suddenly lifted off his feet and held up against the wall. Ricky and Caitlin turn to look at Peter, who is still alive and is using his telekinesis to hold Will up.
The bullet wounds heal themselves and Peter begins to choke Will. Caitlin convinces Peter to stop, and he releases Will. Will drops to the ground and then runs out of the pub.
As a result of saving Ricky, Peter is accepted into the gang, and his initiation consists of receiving a tattoo like the one Ricky has on his forearm. Fortunately for Ricky, Caitlin is a sufficiently talented tattoo artist that he doesn't have to outsource.
Ricky gives Peter the box he took off him when they found him, and leaves Peter and Caitlin alone together. Peter is reluctant to open the box, as he doesn't what to find out that he's a bad person, citing the fact that he also killed Will as a reason for thinking he could be.
Caitlin asks him if he likes things the way they are now and when he nods, she responds that maybe it's best to leave things as they are for now. She leans towards him and they kiss.
As they're kissing, the tattoo on Peter's forearm morphs into the symbol and then vanishes. That could mean that at some point Peter met someone with the ability to alter tattoos and absorbed that ability, and it's going to play a crucial role in the future.
The more likely scenario is that there's no rational explanation and they just did it because it looked cool. And let's face it, that could describe most things that happen on this show.
Maya and Alejandro
An exhausted Maya and Alejandro walk through the streets of a Mexican town. Alejandro is concerned that Maya isn't going to last until they reach the border.
He suggests they steal a car, saying that he's vowed to get his sister to America no matter what it took. Now if you were going to steal a car, would it be a good idea to pick one parked on a reasonably busy street in broad daylight?
Most people would answer “No”, but Alejandro isn't most people, and he does pick a car parked on a reasonably busy street and chooses to do it in broad daylight. He smashes the car window, but is spotted by a police officer, who gives chase. Maya manages to get away, but Alejandro is caught and arrested.
On the wall of the police station is a wanted posted with sketches of Maya and Alejandro. I have to say that I find it a little hard to believe that a crime committed in Honduras would result in posters being sent to Mexico.
Nevertheless, neither of the officers on duty make the connection between Alejandro and the poster. He is locked up in a cell next to Derek, an American. Derek tries to talk to Alejandro, who replies, “No English”.
Maya tries to get the police to release Alejandro, but she doesn't have enough money to pay the fine. In fact, she only claims to have 14 American dollars, and I have no idea how the two of them were planning to get from Mexico to New York with so little money.
She notices the wanted poster and tells the officers that the two of them are murderers. I don't know what she was hoping to achieve, but all she does is end up convincing the police to arrest her.
They don't get very far, as her eyes start bleeding and the officers collapse, as does Derek in the cell next to Alejandro. Maya finds the keys to the cells and frees Alejandro, who accuses her of killing the officers.
He uses his power to stop the bleeding, and the officers groan, showing that they're not dead. Maya and Alejandro prepare to leave, but Derek tells them to wait as he has a car.
The two of the run over to Derek and help him up. The way that they reacted immediately suggests that both of them understand English, including Alejandro. The three of them drive away in Derek's car.
Niki and Micah
Niki and Micah sit in a parked car. Micah tells Niki that he doesn't want to leave Las Vegas, and she replies that there's no other way and it's their chance to make a fresh start.
Micah asks if they're supposed to do that with DL, and Niki says that she'll make sure that Micah can see DL whenever he wants to, but now it's time to say goodbye. Micah gets out of the car and we see that they're in a cemetery. Micah runs to a gravestone which has DL's name on it and kneels in front of it as Niki follows him.
Much later, the two of them arrive in New Orleans, where Niki is planning to leave Micah with some family members. She tells him that he must pretend to be normal and not use his powers, but I guess we'll have to wait and see if he's any better doing it than Claire has been.
Niki says that she doesn't know how long she'll be, but that she has to do this. Micah replies that she always says that before she does something bad.
Niki knocks on the door of a house, and an older woman answers. The woman is played by Nichelle Nichols, who played Uhura in the original incarnation of Star Trek, alongside George Takei, who played Kaito Nakamura. The nature of her relationship with Micah isn't specified, although it's a safe assumption to make that she's from DL's side of the family.
Sylar
A woman sits on a beach sipping a drink. Next to her is another person, although we can't see who it is yet.
Her phone rings, and she tells whoever is phoning her that she'll have to call that person back as “he” is waking up. “He” turns out to be her companion, who is Sylar.
Sylar asks where he is and who she is. She says that they're in Maui and that she is Michelle, although she used to go by the name of Candice.
She says that the police were looking for her after she took Sylar away from Kirby Plaza so she changed her name and appearance. So this turns out to be one of the rare occasions where there's a legitimate reason for a different actor playing a previously-seen character.
She warns Sylar not to move or he'll rip his stitches. He looks at his chest, but doesn't see anything, and she tells him that's because she creates illusions.
Sylar demands that she show him what's really going on, and she gives in. The illusion fades to reveal that they're in some sort of storage room, and I think it's safe to say that it isn't a sterile environment.
The next morning, Sylar tries to move a coffee cup telekinetically, with no success. Candice enters the room, carrying some food.
Sylar complains that he can't move objects, nor do any of his other powers work. Candice tells him that the people she works for will make sure his powers return, but it's going to take a while.
She tells him that she can make his recuperation easier, and demonstrates by creating a few illusions. Sylar stands up and walks over to her.
He brushes her hair away from her face, and while she's distracted, picks up the coffee cup and hits her with it. She falls to the ground, her head bleeding.
When we next see them, Sylar's hands are covered in blood, and Candice is lying on the ground in her true form. I was a little disappointed that we didn't actually see Sylar eating her brain, but I suppose that might be a bit too much for a prime time TV show.
Sylar tries using Candice's power, but nothing happens. He stumbles outside and finds that he's been cooped up in a building in the middle of the jungle.
Sylar not being able to use Candice's power raises an interesting question. Will he be able to use it once he regains his other powers, or does those powers being inactive mean that his ability to obtain other people's powers also isn't working and so he doesn't have Candice's power? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Claire and West
HRG comes into Claire's bedroom to call her down for breakfast and to apologise for getting angry. He acknowledges that it's a big secret that she has to carry around, and if there's anything she wants to ask him in the privacy of their own home then she should go ahead.
She takes him up on his offer and asks what would happen if someone found out about her. He replies that they would have to leave California immediately and go deeper into hiding, maybe even giving up school and jobs entirely, but that would be a worst-case scenario.
At school, Claire tries to convince West that what he saw was just the bottle of nail polish falling over which looked like it was bleeding. West doesn't believe her and tells her she's not very good at lying.
So Claire can't avoid drawing attention to herself and she can't lie convincingly. That worst-case scenario is starting to look more likely.
In science class, West asks his teacher about the previous day's conversation regarding lizards and regeneration. He asks what would happen if a lizard mated with a human, because he thinks he met a lizard girl.
Although the teacher doesn't have much patience with West's questions, he persists. Claire gets upset and walks out of the classroom.
After a brief moment, West gets up too and follows her. I've gone on enough about Claire drawing attention to herself, so I won't touch on it here, but I have to wonder what teacher lets two of his pupils leave class just like that? That could never have happened when I was at school.
West finds Claire outside, and she admits to him that she is a freak and she's tired of pretending to be something that she's not. West tells her to shut up and then picks her up and flies straight up with her in his arms.
The two of them end up on a deserted beach. They talk for a while, both clearly happy that they've met someone else with an ability. The two of them end up kissing, and Claire notices some marks on West's neck, which look the same as those we've seen on other people who were kidnapped by the Company.
West tells her that a couple of years ago something happened to him. All he can remember is someone calling his name and that person looking at him like an animal he wanted to trap. He describes the man as wearing horn-rimmed glasses, and although Claire might not have shown a great deal of intelligence recently, even she should be able to realise that West and HRG's previous encounter is going to cause problems down the line.
Ando and Hiro
Now that Kaito is dead, Ando has returned to his job at Yamagoto Industries. He is caught playing a game by his boss, who tells him to get back to work.
After the boss has gone, Ando opens a drawer in his filing cabinet and takes out Hiro's sword (the one which used to belong to Kensei). He looks at the hilt of the sword and notices the words “Ando Open” written on it.
The top of the handle opens and Ando finds some rolled-up sheets of paper. He unrolls one and starts reading.
The paper is a message from Hiro, telling Ando about his time in 1671. I find it a little hard to believe that no one else in over 300 years saw the “Open” instruction and tried to open the sword.
Via the message, Hiro tells Ando that he's met Takezo Kensei, who isn't quite as they imagined. For that reason, Hiro's decided to stay and help turn Kensei into the hero history says he was. He also tells Ando about his discovery of Kensei's power.
Hiro's voice-over ends, and we pick things up in Japan where we left off last time, with Kensei recovering from his arrow wounds. Kensei is upset with his new-found immortality and walks away, saying that Hiro has cursed him.
Hiro continues to write to Ando, saying that he has met the most beautiful woman Japan has ever seen and that he's fallen in love with her. The only problem is that history has written that she will be the great love of Takezo Kensei.
Hiro finds Kensei next to a fallen tree, cutting himself with a knife. Kensei tells Hiro that he has cut himself many times and the wound healed every time. Hiro tells him that he has powers too, and demonstrates by teleporting to the other side of the tree.
Having accepted the reality of his situation, Kensei realises that he could use his ability to make money duelling. Hiro tries to persuade Kensei that he should be more concerned in the tasks he is supposed to perform, but Kensei isn't interested. As Kensei puts his helmet on, Hiro moves behind him and puts his hand on Kensei's shoulder teleports the two of them.
They arrive at the fortress of the Ninety Angry Ronin who guard the fire scroll which history says Kensei claimed from them. Hiro hands Kensei his sword, wishes him luck, and teleports away.
Hiro and Yaeko wait for Kensei to return, and Yaeko tells Hiro that at times Kensei seems like he is two men, one a brute while the other one is gentle. Before she can carry on any further, she notices Kensei, who has returned with the fire scroll.
Yaeko hugs Kensei and tells him that she will never doubt him again. She kisses him as Hiro watches, his joy at Kensei's return having disappeared.
Some time later, Hiro writes in his messages to Ando that he can return home, as Kensei has proved himself to be a hero, meaning that his work in 1671 is done. Kensei and Yaeko bid farewell to Hiro and they turn and walk away.
As Hiro watches, the two of them pass under a cherry tree and Kensei shakes it so that the blossoms fall on Yaeko. Hiro makes his time travel face, but nothing happens.
He tells Ando that he's sorry and he can't come home yet, before rejoining Kensei and Yaeko. I'm not sure whether what just happened was Hiro making a decision to remain, or as a result of his power not working for some reason.
Mohinder, Matt and Bob
Matt wakes up in the middle of the night. Hearing a sound from the next room, he grabs his gun and investigates.
The sound is Mohinder who has returned from Haiti. He tells Matt that he's going to be working in New York from now on, and Matt isn't very happy about Mohinder doing his espionage work so close to Molly, possibly putting her at risk. I know that they're not a couple, but during that exchange they sounded just like one.
The next day, Mohinder meets Bob at his new lab. The lab is actually Isaac's old apartment, so I guess they didn't want to get rid of the set.
Much later, Mohinder is working in the lab when Bob comes in to give him a vial of something. Bob's phone rings and he goes outside to answer it.
The person phoning is Niki, who has arrived in New York. She asks if Bob is sure he can cure her, and Bob replies that he will, but he wants something in exchange from Niki.
While Bob is talking to Niki, Mohinder makes a phone call of his own, to HRG. As he talks to HRG, he looks through the paintings that have been put in crates.
Mohinder expresses his doubts to HRG, who replies that as long as he's alive then Mohinder will be taken care of. As HRG says this, Mohinder pulls out a painting marked “8/8” and says that they could have a problem in that regard.
He uses his phone to take a picture of the painting and sends it to HRG. The painting is one of a bloodied HRG lying on the ground with a bullet hole through one of the lenses of glasses, while in the background Claire appears to be kissing an individual whose features we can't see.
