“I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone.”

So states the Hippocratic Oath - an oath traditionally taken by all medical practitioners. An oath ignored by Dr Labuschagne in the sleepy North West town of Schweizer Reneke and his colleague Dr Schmitz in Ventersdorp, who offer a very selective form of medical treatment.

The rules at their surgeries are very clear and observed by locals - black patients on the one side and whites on the other side.

Both doctors will treat white people on an appointment basis in their main surgeries, whether they have medical aid or not, but black people are given a number and made to queue in a separate waiting room, often for hours - no exceptions are made for emergencies.

Unacceptable apartheid style tactics still very much alive in 2009.

The 3rd Degree team went undercover to investigate and later expose these discriminatory practices. They confronted the doctors with the facts and set out to expose them for what they are - racists!

I was SHOCKED to see that there are still people who act like this. These drs have 2 seperate entrances for blacks and whites. They treat whites 1st and the blacks are treated once all the whites have been treated (which is usually after hours). The black side of the surgery has uncomfortable furniture and is serviced by a black receptionist. The 1 dr said he does that bcos balck people are poor and therefore charges lower fees i.e. R130 as opposed to R220 charged to white people. He also said its because most balcks do not have medical aid.

When he was exposed for the racist that he is, he said he's closing down the segragated reception rooms and will only have 1. Debra said she'll follow up with him at the end of Feb. The one dr ran away from the cameras and was unrepantant.

Bottomline racism is very much alive in south africa, and it will not die in just 15yrs!!!!

The other guy also said that the HRC had investigated and had found that the practice was not racist, but when Third degree contacted the HRC, they confirmed that they had conducted an investigation but they were as yet to confirm whether or not the practice was racist or not.

Dr Labuschagne must pay for his racist, instead of solving the matter he decide to ran away from camera's, i was born in Schweizer-Reneke but studying in Mafikeng, i was'nt aware about this racism of Dr Labuschagne and Dr Schmitz in Ventersdorp until i watched 3rd Degree yesternight. but i want to thank you Debora we really appreciate that thank you

there is one practise in Jan Kemp, between Hartswater & Kimberly that my grand mother goes to. They have the same setup but i didnt think it will be racism, they also say patients with appointments use the front door and without appointments they use the back door. The receptionist @ the front door is white and the one @ the back door is black/coloured. and patients where black @ the back door, and white in the front door.OMW i must send HPSA the doctor's name and his premises.

i dont see why this has to be seen as racist. If the whites pay more for the servise, then why are they not allowed to have more comfortable seating? The blacks pay less for a servise, and i mean if they want to pay R220 instead of R130 then they to would have had more comfortable seating, or would have been in the same waitintg room as the whites. CANDE - i am with you. I dont see this as rasist either. And if DR Labuschagne actually join the waiting rroms for black and whites, then i think that they should increase the fees for the blacks aswell. Cause it would be rasist against the whites to make them PAY MORE for the same services but do not get any benefits for the EXTRA amount they pay???? Think about it people. Racisism works both ways. And black get way more benefits than our white. Even sport is about choosing the CORRECT AMOUNT OF PEOPLE THAT IS BLACK and not the PEOPLE TALENTED ENOUGH for the team.

Who wants to pay R90 more for comfortable seating puhleeese....the fact that these dr's treat blacks when all the whites have been treated, tells you they are racist. No matter how early you arrive or what pain you are in, as long as the white waiting room has patients, the black patients will wait...please man, this is racism 101

@55555, did you watch the episode or are you just going by what people on this blog say, didn't you see when the black Third degree people went there, they were told to come back later, even when they had medical aid, the third degree staff even called stating that they had medical aid they were still told to come later, but when the white third degree staff member phoned they were told to come even though they didn't have medical aid.surely not all white people in NW can afford to pay the R220 and they don't all have medical aid but they still got treatment before black people.

how about this. Having a kid of 2years old with cancer. your funds are exhausted after having to pay for lumberpunches, chemo, etc. Where it states that a child under six years will get free medical. ONLY if the child is BLACk. How is that fair???

it's unfair and wrong but shame as the one lady said, they dont really have a choice. and thina's blacks are so used to being treated terribly that we dont even see the "wrongs" done by whites anymore. thank God for television and journalists cause something can now be done to make the lives of those poor people better,even though they didnt realize in the first place that there was something wrong with how they were being treated.

id o think that what these doctors were somewhat racist. BUT, why is all RACISM against black seen in the media and made a scene of. No i do not agree with it, but for f*ck sakes our whites does not have it easy either. yes i am white. we are also affected by racism. as black may break into our homes, rape or kill our wifes and children, but we act against it - like shoot the guy because of selfdefence abouve all thing THE WHITE SHOOTER is seen as a racist and sent to jail beacuse he saw his wife or children raped and killed infront of him and reacted on it.

TheLady- i dont dispute that "it's not about saving money, but about people's healths".most of those people unfortunately dont have medical aid anyway.not condoning the doctors' actions,but atleast the blacks aren't the one's paying more (cash). they are (paying more) by being attended to late and being seated in uncomfortable chairs, yes, but for people who have nothing and very little choices, the extra R90 is a lot.

all im saying is that it could've been worse.atleast they're getting medical care. but after the expose last night, something will definately change im sure.

But my biggest concern is are the black patients getting geniune medicine or are they getting panado for each and every ailment!!? What medicine are they being given?

Even If the person is willing more - for good service and health, not chairs PUHLEASE - will they be served in the white only rooms?

So with that l am not excluding myself. English is not my mother language, l write it to accommodate everyone, so you must expect mistakes like that.

As far as I know, there are no more white residential areas (ofcourse i stand to be corrected), my aunt is a social worker, she works in soweto, and alexandra townships and can you believe there are some white people living there as well,everything that happens to black people happens to them as well, they live in shacks, although you will not find a vast majority of whites like you will in the previous white residential areas. so the my dear ive got only 1 answer to all your questions, it is not safe to walk ANYWHERE at night, whether it's in town or the location, there is no safety gauranteed. in anycase, what would you be doing walking at night alone?

But kodwa omdat, black people do this to themselves, they leave Black Dr's practises and go to White ones, they will even spend more money on transport just to be seen by 'baas Dr' who does not even touch them.
Most black patients(esp uneducated ones) dont believe a black dr can treat them, its even worse if that black Dr is Female.... shame ask me, I've seen it all.

Do yu honestly want to tell me that there are not Black Dr's in that Vantersdop area? Why are these patients not going there? Lemme answer for you coz- they want 'baas dr' to treat them, for heaven's sake baas cant even hear(language prob) what they r saying and probably doesn't even care.

LOL Bee and i can tell you uguthi in the rural areas where my grandmother stays there is a female back doctor who was married to our relative, so we sort of related. but kodwa haiye cha she chooses to be driven 50km more to see a white "bass Dr".

Mina when I was doing internship at this particular hospital in KZN, I would see a patient grand grand at the end when you give them the card to go and collect medication they will say- "Kanti ngimbona nini u Dokotela, Sister?" Mind you I had already introduced myself as Dr Knowles-Carter, but ke they just didnt think a bootyful black chick like me can be what 'baas Dr' is...

I am aware of those questions hence i said it is not safe to walk anywhere alone. if i had children black or white i would not want them to walk alone, they are "children" for crying out loud, anything can happen anywhere no matter what race . there are some white people using taxis, they do walk alone to those taxi ranks. so please. i dont have to answer those other questions as the answer i gave you erases all those questions you've asked sweety.

Bee-my GP is female and black...I love the woman-she listens. She recommended a gynae who happened to be black-problem brothaman doesn't take medical and I needed him to perfom a prosedure he told me he wanted his R3000 upfront on top of the R500 i paid for consultation!

I have always had black GPs...something are just so much better if I explain in Zulu.

Guys which race does not think bad of their own? When we die how come we dont cry foul if we are buried next to a white person who may have been racist? R90 changes nothing but the walls of the surgery and better chairs....it adds nothing to the quality of your life - that my friends is determined by YOU - black, white, colored, indian; greek or chinese......and if YOU have a racist or xenophobic outlook and make jokes or pass stupid comments about someone else's OR EVEN your own race then YOU will always be a miserable ol' fool.

Times are changing if you going to stay in the 1980's then good for you but move on with this racism thing...stop giving it more time than its due and start with yourself by looking at a person for who they are and not what color they are. Stop judging based on race - it fails!!!! If you do that then someone else will see your actions and very soon you could have changed the face of your community......please......too many wars have been fought and are being fought all in the name of RACE....if people only realised that we all came from one race for more info read Gen 11! Ok, the reasons why the majority of black people in this country are not ready to be governed by whites:

1) Whenever blacks start moving into white neighbourhoods, the whites move out?

2) whenever a multiracial school starts having mostly black people applying, the white parents take their white children out. the principal of Potchefstroom high school for Girls went as far as saying this school is going to black and actually calling white pupils to ask them who they know that is white and in grade 7 coz no whites are applying there anymore.( 2 of the white girls told a friend of mine)

3) this private practise case, what a coincidence that ventersdorp is just outside potchefstroom

Some white people in this country still isolate themselves from blacks, we still have white, coloured, indian and black neighbourhoods for example in Potchefstroom: promosa is for coloureds, mohadin for indians, central town for whites and ikageng for blacks. theres a surbub in Pretoria called Weavely it is just whites living there and the only blacks you see are the gardeners and housekeepers. when myself and 3 other friends of mine walked down one of the streets of weavely, people there were stairing at us like we were from another planet and it seemed as though they were wondering whos black kids we were or which black person just moved in the neighbourhood.
i have alot to say but dont know how to summarise it.

WHY THE ISOLATION??

I JUST WANT 3RD DEGREE TO INVESTIGATE THE ISOLATION BY WHITE PEOPLE FROM BLACKS AND WHY MOST BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOT READY AND WILLING TO BE GOVERNED BY A WHITE GOVERNMENT, you'll find some interesting responses. i suggest you investigate in areas where racism is still being practised: potchefstroom, pretoria, bloemfontein just to name the popular

i am a19 year old black south african and didnt experience apartheid but my parents, friends parents etc experienced this and are too hurt and destroyed emotionally for them to just except white people, i say this because i have heard comments such as 'oseka watsamaya o trusta leboru' meaning DONT EVER TRUST A WHITE PERSON and they bealive the white people also preach to their children telling them that blacks are dogs and should be treated as such. if you actually go in the work place and investigate the relationship between white s and blacks, or the different races you might not be amazed at the outcome.

South Africans are not 100% united or the perfect rainbow nation that it would like to be perceived as, why would Africa unite if there is no intergartion within the different country's?(dont know if im making sense but ja) lets hear your replies

i would like to reply to Tuesday eve'"s broadcast about racism. well we are 15 years in a country of democracy and still find educated & professionals to act in a manner which have no respect for other people, but rather discriminate and undermine the humanity of other racial groups. iam so glad that this broadcast was on tv, but still in the western cape and escpially in the small towns like Worcester, Robertson, Ashton you will still find 2 doors. a patient was even attacked by a doctor last year when he asked why he must sit in a separate room
then the whites. Somehow goverment has to bring strict laws against racism. People get to easy away with this crime. Thanks debbie for bringing this issue to the people of south africa.

Hello people, all of you must wake up, and smell the poison in your coffee...... The political situation in South Africa is not about race or colour anymore!!! Ask yourself this.... Why is crime so high in our country? Why is there so many people with out jobs? Why do we have such a high HIV infection rate? On a television program a couple of days ago, they stated that there are 7 million Zimbabwians in South Africa. That's right, 7 MILLION!!!! That is 7 Million job opportunities that our husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, and our children could have occupied. Our people are starving, they have no money for food, no place to stay..... They are dying in squatter camps without proper sanitation, dying of HIV, and HIV related illnesses. People are stealing, murdering, and raping in the fight for survival in our country. Corrupt government officials are taking away the roof over our childrens heads, and us, the people of south africa are suffering the concequences. People like Debra are looking in the wrong place for somebody to blame, stop blaming apartheid and racism for what is wrong in our country, and start looking for a solution. Let;s take hands as a rainbow nation, and make our country the strong country it was before we fell apart as a nation..... We can do it!

To a certain extend I agree with Bigmama and 55555. When are we blacks going to do anything with integrity and honesty and without looking at what other races do?

It seems to me we haven’t yet accepted that our standards are too low when it comes to doing anything that is related to service. Go to any government department that has to do with service and see what level of service you get.

To show that racism is still rife in SA, I have experinced it form a 7 year old Afrikaner Boy.

Imagine a 7 year old comes to play in my house a darkies house. Clearly he doesn't see the difference or if there is anything wrong with him being friends with a black kid. My hubby was playing a soccer game on playstation. The child came and said to my husband that he will not watch soccer because it is a sport played by black people, he will only watch rugby because it's a sport for white people. But he was suprised to see that on playstation the players are mostly white.

But it just goes to show that the poor child was taught this cRap by his parents. How do parents teach their child not to like other people. I teach my child to love everyone, rich, poor, skinny fat, black, white etc.

I'm just saying that the sooner we accept that there is racism in our country the better and stop playing rainbow nation games. Obvioulsy not all whites are like that but there are many that still live in the 80's. Maybe we can deal with the issue better if we accept the truth.

Why is crime so high in our country? Why is there so many people with out jobs? Why do we have such a high HIV infection rate? On a television program a couple of days ago, they stated that there are 7 million Zimbabwians in South Africa. That's right, 7 MILLION!!!! That is 7 Million job opportunities that our husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, and our children could have occupied.

Kosie99 - how does Zimbabwe come into this? Stop blaming others and look in your mirror and then you will see that you are the problem. How many SAfricans are in the UK, USA & Europe at the moment? Do you hear them complaining and stoning SA citizens to death or burning them?

Have you forgotten or are you too young to understand the role Zimbabwe played in aparthied? How many SAfricans went to other countries when SA was in time of need? Please....these people need our help NOW, or is it just take take take - and blame blame blame

Cleve I agree with you we need to accept the truth and deal with it. Racism + Xenophobia are just another form of low self esteem....

i think its high tym dat people start actin on more important thngs than d colour of skin...unemployment,aids n stuff..racism is so 1960.racism=backwardness..
