Channel: SABC 3

Some have been there since 1994 and have never spent a day in post-apartheid South Africa. Some have recently been arrested and - if not executed - will face imprisonment for most, if not all of their adult lives.

Unlike most other nations South Africa will not enter into a prisoner transfer treaty with Thailand, or any other country for that matter. In terms of such a treaty, after spending a portion of their sentence in the country where they were convicted South African prisoners abroad would then be repatriated to serve the remainder of their time in their homeland.

Without this agreement they are doomed to remain incarcerated in a foreign country, far from their loved ones, isolated and often forced to endure horrific conditions.

But should we care? Surely we have enough of our own problems with crime on our home turf - not to mention overcrowded prisons - to extend our sympathy to South Africans who have broken the law abroad?

This Special Assignment investigation looks at the situation with specific emphasis on South Africans who've ncarcarated for drug smuggling.

Looks hectic - it reminds me of that true-story Joaquin Phoenix movie Return To paradise about the guy who gets executed for getting caught with dagga

At least in Thailand they are really in prison unlike here in RSA. They should be left in Thai prison until they finish their punishment I say. In Thai there is no such thing as prisoner rights unlike here in RSA. Where the hell have you seen prisoners given the rights to vote? Only in Africa can this nonsense happen.

that is so true - a prisioner/criminal gave up their rights the minute they decided to break the law.....now the law still gives you rights after you broke it.....kinda a contradiction -

will set my pvr for this one....

But cnga, ur guest get more than hour? Guys but what about those who are nt really guilty? I dnt think breaking the law means u give up ur rights? How many of us get traffic fines everyday? Prison shouldnt be about punishment but about rehabilitation bcoz sum1 decides ur guilty based on the balance of probability! We all make mistakes! Otherwise why dnt we bring in the death penalty??

How many of us get traffic fines everyday?
Probably a lot of us. Isn’t it by just getting the fine you are already been punished. Try and not pay the fine and see what happens after that.

Prison shouldn’t be about punishment but about rehabilitation bcoz sum1 decides ur guilty based on the balance of probability!
Tell that to the victim and see how will they react. If you are the one who has fallen victim would you still say the same? Balance of probability only works at the place of work and not at the dept. of justice. Dept. of justice must prove beyond reasonable doubt that you are guilty. Therefore what you are saying I  do not agree with.

Floh
18 Mar 2009 19:03

Ha,ha,ha,ha...........I was watching the Naija when telling Debra right in the face that SHE DOES NOT HAVE LISTENING SKILLS.

But what is his role in the Department of Health. Where was Manto?

Cande
18 Mar 2009 19:40

haaibo Floh, Manto is not the minister of health anymore

Paralyzer
18 Mar 2009 21:03

Realist, i do agree with u, but beyond reasonable doubt just means a high probability...i do think we need the justice system but it wont be 100% correct. And besides punishing sum1 wnt make the victims feel less victimised just more vindicated! Lol @ manto, haha
