I don't buy the Sowetan but when I come across it (on Fridays), I read their Time Out section because I enjoy reading the Wireless, a rant about hot and not so hott radio shows.
So while visiting Siz 'n Scoop at YFM, I came across a copy of “Wireless” and there was Amon Mokoena's face (previously with YFM and now with Metro FM) and a title that says “Not my type of brunch” ...

......now that alone caught my attention because I've always regarded Amon as one of radio's hottest.
I got to know Amon when he stood in for Pabi (I think) on YFM breakfast and I really enjoyed him. I could never listen to his actual show on the station but I knew he was good and it came as no surprise when I heard of his move to Metro FM last year.
Anyway, back to the article, Yho, I started reading and I was like “What the f**k?” …..here's why:
“Some people don’t have a sense of mortification on air or on a national radio station.
Take Metro FM presenter Amon Mokoena who unashamedly calls himself “the famous DJ you don’t know anything about”.
This begs the question, so what is he famous for? Is it because he is a radio presenter and therefore a celebrity like everybody who is on radio and/ or appears on television even though there is nothing to celebrate about?
Mokoena is the host of I Am Brunch between 9am and noon on Saturdays. Even the name of the show will spin your head with wonder.
Couldn’t he and his team of brainy producers and marketers come up with a better name for the show? This one sounds like a restaurant menu. Even if I were a customer – I wouldn’t order any of the items listed there.”
Hahahahah okay, even though I was shocked at first, the part about the restaurant menu made me laugh my ass off kwa kwa kwa!
Now...I was really disappointed with the writer for getting it so wrong about Amon being “the famous DJ you don't know anything about”.
First of all, it is actually “The famous DJ you know nothing about” and secondly, that's Adil's tagline, not Amon's!
Thirdly, Adil hosts the 09:00 – 12:00 slot, not AMON!
Mr Mokoena hosts 06:00 – 09:00 hle and really, I understand no one is perfect and mistakes happen and everything but the part that makes this one “unforgivable” is that the writer continues to say:
“NOW, DUE TO TIME CONSTRAINTS, I COULDN’T GOOGLE MOKOENA, but I bet my last rand, there is a famous local who was also born on that day. But the famous unknown didn’t deem it imperative for us to know.”
Now come on!! How do you write an entire article (especially one that you get paid for) about someone and not even “google” them?? Time constraints? Surely deadlines are communicated well in advance? Not?
Now, the reason why I say Sowetan owes Amon an apology is because a huge chunk of the article is based on :
Amon saying he's a famous DJ we know nothing about & how he plays boring music on his show. There's even a picture of AMON attached to the piece!
Now, had the writer confirmed the DJ's name by checking the Metro FM line up, which is available, free of charge & within a few seconds (if you are pressed for time) on the Metro FM website, he would have know that the DJ he was supposed to diss was Adil not Amon!
Also, the writer says...
“But “the famous one you don’t know anything about” will instead slow you down with over- played American junk. I swear, in the one hour that I listened to his show this past weekend, the famous one only played one local song. Okay, maybe that is not his fault because they are dictated to when it comes to what they dish out”
My question is, why continue to blame him when you admit that you know he's not responsible for the playlist? Was it just a matter of writing so you could “meet” the number of words required for the article?
Hayi shem...I'm disappointed yazi nina. Say sorry to Amon, rewrite that piece, put Adil's name and picture there and I might just agree with you about him not being the hottest thing on radio.
As for Amon, you got this radio thing on lock down my brother and I'm sorry for whatever embarrassment that article may have caused you coz I'm sure there are people out there who read it and didn't pick up the unforgivable error!
Mara Adil, nawe vele what is it that you say you are famous for??? I'm the only one in my complex who knows you by the way!
About the name of the show:
2 weeks ago, I heard Adil asking listeners to help him come up with a name for the show and if "I Am Brunch" is the best that came up then ja noh...no comment!
If you have nothing better to do or are just feeling lazy like that writer then read his entire piece on this link:
HERE
*sigh*
