Episode 505
This Place is Death

Wow! What an episode. I’m pretty sure my neighbours heard a roar of frustration emanating from my place when the episode ended. Seriously, I could have gone on. Fifty minutes of Lost a week is just simply not enough!

Let’s pick up from last week when Sun pulls out a gun on Ben. Ben, that wonderful ball of slime, tells her that Jin is alive and he can prove it. Infuriated that Ben is trying to get them back to the island, Kate leaves with Aaron – as does Sayid after promising to kill both Ben and Jack the next time he encounters them.

Ben takes a very skeptical Sun and Jack to Mrs Hawking, but not before they meet Desmond outside who asks them if they are also looking for Faraday’s mother.

As always, things on the island are so much more interesting.

Jin is still with Danielle and her husband and the crew. They manage to ask Jin via diagrams and hand signals if there is a signal tower on the island. Jin agrees to take them to it. On the way, one of their crew goes missing. They find her bloodied body. Enter our monster, Ole Smokey. Jin realizes what it is and tells them all to run.

Ole Smokey grabs Montand and pulls him toward a hole in the ground at the infamous temple. There proceeds a magnificent tug-of-war between Ole Smokey and Jin and the others, with Montand being the rope. Sadly for Montand, it ends when Ole Smokey wins and his arm is ripped from his body. The Frenchies all want to go and rescue him but Jin persuades Danielle that she stay behind. Time jumps.

Jin eventually stumbles on the beach where Danielle has killed 2 of her fellow crew members and has a rifle drawn on her husband. She kills him and then goes after Jin. Time jumps again and happily, this time, its Sawyer and co that Jin stumbles apon.

He wants to know what happened to Sun and insists that Charlotte translate. They explain what’s been happening.

They all head off to the Orchid. They jump a number of times, and by now, Sawyer is also experiencing nosebleeds. Eventually, Charlotte collapses and seems incapable of continuing. She gets worse and tells Jin not to bring Sun back as “This place is death”. After a while, Daniel stays behind with her while the others continue to the Orchid (which is near the well, according to Charlotte). Charlotte eventually dies.

Sawyer and co reach the Orchid and find the well. Locke starts lowering himself into the well. Time jumps and Sawyer is left holding a length of rope sticking out of the ground. Locke falls into the well and breaks leg. He gets a visit from Christian Sheppard who tells him what to do. Locke turns the wheel.

Wow. I simply cannot wait for next week’s episode!!

Key Points from this episode; let’s start with events off the island first.

• Daniel’s mother is Eloise Hawking – something we’d already suspected. What I found interesting is that Ben didn’t seem to know that Mrs Hawking is Daniel’s mother. And also very interesting is that she says that for now, it doesn’t matter that the six are not there, and they will make do with what they have.

Hmm. Wasn’t she insistent that everyone be present for this event? What’s changed now? Is it because Desmond is with the group now? This is going to be interesting. I’m sure he’ll remember her from “Flashes before his eyes”.

Anyway, I wonder if they mean to also return Ji-Yeon to the island as well? Does this list also include Frank?

• Ben uses Jin’s wedding ring to persuade Sun to return. I wonder if Locke mentioned to Ben that he promised Jin to tell Sun that he was dead. Either way, Ben now has the perfect way of getting Sun to cooperate.

And on the island:

• We finally get to see Danielle’s sad story. I can’t help but feel for this woman. What must it have been like to see your husband change and then try and kill you? AND then you kill him while 7 months pregnant AND then your baby is stolen from you. No wonder this woman was nuts.

• Motand and the monster. I’m pretty sure that it wasn’t Motand calling for help from the temple; he surely couldn’t have been that coherent after having his arm ripped off his body. I think it was Smokey. And what happened to Robert and the others down there? It’s very clear that they changed judging by the fact that he tried to kill Danielle? And how do they know that Smokey is a security system? Who told them? Was it the Others? I’m thinking that maybe that brain washing technique of the Others were in use here. But then again, the Others wanted Danielle’s baby, so why would they instruct him to kill Danielle??

• Jin notices a column of black smoke on the day that Danielle kills her husband. I wonder if she gives birth on the same day too. Remember that she lit a fire similar to that when she stole Aaron.

• Poor Charlotte. I was not overly fond of her, but I still felt a twinge of sadness – but I think it was more for Daniel than her. Here again, we’d already discussed and taken for granted the fact that she had been born and brought up on the island. No big shock there.

However, the story that she tells Daniel that she thinks that he’s the weird man that told her never to return to the island or she’d die when she was younger. Interesting! That would tie in nicely with the image of Daniel we saw in the first episode working for Dharma. It seems that he’s found out the secret of time travel and traveled back to warn Charlotte about her death.

You’ve got to give the actress – Rebecca Maader – props here. That was some really fine acting on her part, especially the scene when she tells Jin that this place is death. She looked like death itself.

• I wonder if Charlotte is Ben’s daughter and her mother is the missing Annie from Ben’s childhood???

• Locke meeting Christian Sheppard in the well was quite awesome. Is Christian really dead? How did he or his ghost travel to that particular point in time? Christian tells him that he was supposed to move the island, not Ben.

Why is it that I feel so much for Locke? I really don’t like the man, far from it, but sometimes I feel for him. Like when he tells Christian that Richard says he needs to die. Great acting from Terry O Quinn. You could just see Locke biting down on his misgivings and deciding to just get on with it. This is the thing about Locke. I truly believe that as misguided and stupid as he may often have been, this guy is 150% dedicated to his cause. At times his faith has wavered, but I am sure that whatever he’s done, he’s done because he believes that both the island and his role on it is special.

So, Locke’s turned the Donkey Wheel, and we must suppose that it will help. I certainly hope so as I wouldn’t want Sawyer to end up like Charlotte – dead! I am absolutely loving this season. It’s quick, it’s answering questions and it feels like we’re right there on that island with our Losties.

What we’ve learnt this week

• Eloise Hawking is Daniel Faraday’s mother
• Charlotte was born on the island
• Daniel somehow gets back to the island when Charlotte was a little girl to warn her about returning to the island
• Locke was supposed to move the island, not Ben

New Questions this week

• What happened to Robert and co on their rescue mission?
• Why is Mrs Hawking unconcerned that the Oceanic 6 are not all there?
• Why does Ben seems upset that Mrs Hawking is Daniel’s mother?
• Did Ben deliberately keep the truth from Sun? (about Jin)

Interesting Trivia (from this site)

• This is the first episode of the entire series in which Ben and Desmond speak to each other.

• In this episode, Locke falls and breaks his right leg. This is the same leg he keeps injuring on the Island. Previous injuries include having the hatch door crash down on it and being shot in it.

• Charlotte remarks that she knows more about Carthage than Hannibal. Hannibal was a war general from Carthage from around 200 BC. He is considered to be one of the greatest military commanders and tacticians through out all of history. Carthage was located in what is modern-day Tunisia, where Charlotte was doing field work before being recruited to the Kahana's mission.

Where is Sawyer meeting Jin again? A true fine moment in this episode.

>>Charlotte was born on the island<<

Err no.. she grew up on the island :)

>>We finally get to see Danielle’s sad story. I can’t help but feel for this woman. What must it have been like to see your husband change and then try and kill you? AND then you kill him while 7 months pregnant AND then your baby is stolen from you. No wonder this woman was nuts.<<

You know.. and its this point that I question the fact that people saying she would have forgotten Jin just like that.

1.  Jin saves her from becoming infected
2.  Jin disappears right in front of her eyes and reappears days if not weeks later later.

>>However, the story that she tells Daniel that she thinks that he’s the weird man that told her never to return to the island or she’d die when she was younger. Interesting! THIS is the crux for me.  Faraday AGAIN is at a different point in time LOOKING EXACTLY how he looks now.  Add this to the fact that he KNOWS so much about time around him when he shouldnt... A VERY INTERESTING POINT TO ME.

As we have discussed, my views surrounding Locke is that he is now coming full circle, his selfish motivation surrounding him believing he is the chosen one combined with his belief in what has made him "great" has severely distorted him.  He is lucky that the island hasnt punished him so far for his gung ho attitude in getting things done... however I think his death might just be what he needs to do to redeem himself and lets hope this is not the end for him.

I suppose that's what she technically said, but she's implied before that she was born here.  She said in the S4 finale: "Would it make any sense if I told you I was still looking for where I was born?"

Nah mate.. if that was the case she would have said it especially to Dan I think.  Besides based on Ben's info (I know :-) ) she was born in Middelsex England.

Yeah, I totally get what you're saying.  It's seems unlikely to me as well.  Maybe she did remember him, and kept quiet for whatever reason.  But then again, her mental state was not the best.... I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this one plays out.

Yes.  Agree wholeheartedly about this one :)
