On 3rd Degree this week:

Episode: Albino Murders in Sub-Saharan Africa Investigated
Broadcast date: 12 May 2009 at 21h30
Channel: e.tv and the eNews Channel

3rd_degree_12MayDiscrimination against albinos, known as “Zeru-Zeru’s” or ghost, is a serious problem throughout sub-Saharan Africa, but recently in Tanzania it has taken a new twist.

Many people believe albinos have magical powers and as a result, their body parts are being sold to people who wish to boost their businesses. It’s alleged that fishermen struggling with a declining fish population in Lake Victoria are buyers, as are miners who hope to bring greater riches to the surface.

This trend in Tanzania has now spread to neighbouring Kenya, Burundi and Congo where similar killings have been reported.

The killers can earn up to 500 000 Tanzanian Shillings (about R15 000) for the harvesting and selling of albino body parts - a fortune in this impoverished nation that is amongst the poorest in the world.

3rd Degree interviews the families of the victims who speak about the trauma they have gone through and gets expert opinion on the issue. The show also uncovers evidence of this horrific practice using an undercover camera.

A very hectic , sad story i was really hurt when i watch the story.

There are some guys from my township they are doing the same thing but not in Albino's, in all people. They kill almost 12 people now, they took only the part they want not the bones and kill you.

Its so horrible to wake up on weekends and hear that there's another corpes   found. The people know them & i also know them they are very young- they were caught up, arrested and they stay few months in jail but now they are back
.

I watched the show till the end but its carzy. There are some crazy people are out there...especially the fact that they actually hunt them in their houses while sleeping and chop them while others are watching. Education does help becuase of those people where educated would know that Albinos are not different from all of us and the difference is that they loose skin pigmentation during the process....its really absurd what those babaric people are doing. I was so sickened by their believe in such a way that before i sleep i actually say a prayer to God about it.

I was so horrified to learn that human beings are being murdered because of ignorance!  Tanzania and the other countries mentioned on the show need to put stringent laws in place to protect the lives of these innocent people.  People need to be educated about what Albinism.  How else can we stop this deplorable practice.  I was saddened at first by this story but this slowly turned to anger.  More can be done to protect Albinos.  More should be done.  I don't want to believe that we have become a cold, callous heartless people.....that we can simply turn a blind eye and just say "oh well".  My prayers are with those two little girls and all the other children featured on the show and the thousands of others we may never know about.

These killers are cruel, you know how inncoent were those 2 girls, its even worse that their father told them that there's people who hunts and kills albinos,I was also suprised they can detect that the bone is of an albino,by a radio, signals,,,,,,
It doesnt take a rocket scientist to now that albinos are human , as well, I dont dont think that those people care , and its not like they dont know , they know nxxx !!!

Didn’t watch it, but for some reason I am glad. What is our word really turning into? People are really taking this barbaric acts-thing to another level. Is the world on its last days?????...oh, did you hear about those immoralists thieving bones of deceased people in Mpumalanga?

It felt so ridiculous for me for other people to believe in such thing. Those children need support & protection but now how are thhey going to trust the nation coz they are scared, they not even sure who to run to.At first i felt sorry for those kids but turned to anger after a while. I just pray to God to punish them harder they are human beings as well it`s only colour of skin thatdiffer. They will rot in hell for all i care.

I watched the show and was saddened by the babaric behavior of these people. While watching I had a strong feeling that maybe 3rd Degree shouldnt have shown this on national tv. TV is the most influencial medium of communication and I bealive that some people, yes here in S.A would actually start to bealive that a strong muthi can be done with Albino's body parts. The fact is there are sick people out there who are so desperate that they can do anything to have what they want. You wait and see, this is going to happen here in S.A soon.

I'm a young mother of an eight months baby boy with albinism, beleive me after watching that show i couldn't sleep the whole night and still today it's still difficult to forget about it, right now i'm at work i left him with my sister but i phone every minute to find out if he's ok. People need to be educated about albinism, cause this thing is going too far, believe me after sometime it's gonna happen here in South Africa. It is not true that if you have an albino child you going to get rich, instead you become broke because there sun screen creams and the bath soap are very much expensive. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT WE CAN DO TO HELP THOSE KIDZ IN TANZANIA,
