Episode: Albino Murders in Sub-Saharan Africa Investigated
Broadcast date: 12 May 2009 at 21h30
Channel: e.tv and the eNews Channel
Discrimination against albinos, known as “Zeru-Zeru’s” or ghost, is a serious problem throughout sub-Saharan Africa, but recently in Tanzania it has taken a new twist.
Many people believe albinos have magical powers and as a result, their body parts are being sold to people who wish to boost their businesses. It’s alleged that fishermen struggling with a declining fish population in Lake Victoria are buyers, as are miners who hope to bring greater riches to the surface.
This trend in Tanzania has now spread to neighbouring Kenya, Burundi and Congo where similar killings have been reported.
The killers can earn up to 500 000 Tanzanian Shillings (about R15 000) for the harvesting and selling of albino body parts - a fortune in this impoverished nation that is amongst the poorest in the world.
3rd Degree interviews the families of the victims who speak about the trauma they have gone through and gets expert opinion on the issue. The show also uncovers evidence of this horrific practice using an undercover camera.
