Special Assignment tonight:
Broadcast date: Tuesday, 19 May 2009
Episode Title: Eish-Kom!
Illegal electricity connections dent the country’s economy by millions of rands every year. Not only is this an extremely dangerous pursuit – but businesses, private households and even the national electricity grid, are negatively affected.
The power utility, Eskom claims it is doing all it can to clamp down on so-called ‘izinyoka’. But as tonight’s Special Assignment investigation shows, corruption is rife and the rot is deep - in some cases, within Eskom itself.
Special Assignment speaks to a former Eskom employee who was disciplined for blowing the whistle on corruption in the company - he tells of being ignored when he warned his superiors of corrupt officials working with criminals to outsmart the prepaid electricity system, as well as of Eskom electricians in certain suburbs working with criminal syndicates who illegally connect electricity to non-paying households.
Special Assignment is on SABC3 on Tuesdays at 20h00.
