maching to SABC is not a solution

The planned TV mass protest by TV producers, actors, crew and other members of the television industry to hand memorandum of demands at SABC's Johannesburg and Cape Town is not a good idea to embark on and its one of the most ineffective measures to be have taken. Its like beating a dead snake as our President would say, or trying to sue Eskom in the midst of blackout crisis which they just don’t have capacity even if there’s a will to prevent. SABC would never offer any solution carried in that memorandum, infact I dout they will even look at it.

SABC has been running like a headless chicken, trying to suck up to politicians who have made it clear that they want to get rid of the current board which was unceremonial paced by Thabo Mbeki few days after his defeat at Polokwane.
The board can’t function instead its members have turned against each other with the board Chairperson Khanyisiwe Mkhonza alleged to have been illegally spying at her fellow board members. another board member Bheki Khumalo wrote a letter to his fellow members accusing Mkhonza of of misconduct for allegedly:
Harassing and victimising Dali Mpofu, who was fired as group chief executive, costing the SABC R15 million in legal fees and severance pay;
Hiring a car and driver without proper authorisation at a cost of R200 000;
Granting sabbatical leave to a Pearl Luthuli, the SABC3 channel boss, costing the corporation R500 000;
Misleading the board in the appointment of a chief operating officer, costing the corporation R1 million in legal bills; and
Using an outside company to spy on the board members at exorbitant costs.
She is also accused of unauthorised expenditure amounting to R180 000 for having a security guard posted outside her home for a year.

The mass rally need to serve as the discussions on finding solutions to whole list of issues that are affecting the industry, such as practicing employment conditions – lots of companies in the industry are not playing by any acceptable labour rules, they are being run like spazza shop, they impose their own conditions to their employees, they overwork employees with no overtime payments, they don’t offer any incentives such as medical aids, pension funds or bonuses, their main concern is that employees perform to meet deadlines at all cost even it means risking their lives or health. The other issue is the lack of financial/funding availability to emerging producers.
The Television Industry Emergency Coalition (TVIEC) should engage Government, Department Communication and its portfolio committee and department of labour also need to play a role to ensure that labour laws to get applied throughout the industry, while Trade and Industry, Arts and Culture also need to all play their part.

Hi Authentic views.
Those producers just want money that is owed to them and worst of all the SABC is not talking to them about when and how they will pay them. So, if they have to go and dance to get an answer then so be it. A protest march is also about raising the public's awareness to the issues & to get their support. They've got my support, march on comrades, wish I could join you.

As long as the SABC's Board is controlled by the ruling party we can never hear the end of this.  I have tried so many times to apply to the SABC but not even a call for an interview, i think nepotism is rife there.

Unlike Mjj and Realist’s arguments on a similar post, yours is a well put argument, I see where you coming from. But I’m with BS.. march on comrades…plus personally I think SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago is so arrogant its appalling…Infact I’m calling Phat Joe tomorrow and nominating him as the worst person of the week! So ya all tune in tomorrow morning.

I'm saying the mach won't be a fruitful exercise because it doesn't really affect SABC's operational functions. It could have worked better if it was COSATU posses to inflict serious economic pain if ignored.
TVIEC should have lobbied Unions that represents SABC employees in various functional areas to join the mach, that was going to be a serious threat to SABC but now because its just external action, it does not affect the internal.
Another issue is that the industry does not speak with one voice, the same producers are still daily jsupplying SABC with content regardless of what they are being owed. At the mach some producers won't even pitch especially those who have contracts with other broadcast channels.
Finnally  SABC does not have money now, one wonders at how they survive to pay salaries each month, they are waiting for the Treasury to approve their bailout request while that hasn't happen yet it will be difficult for SABC to payout.

I'm saying the mach won't be a fruitful exercise because it doesn't really affect SABC's operational functions. Authentic views said it

SABC has come out and said they want a bail out from Government.........striking to the SABC might not have an effect (they got no money)......handing the memo to the DOC or Treasury might help....in fact disrupting the state of the Nation Address next week might help NOT marching to the SABC premises.................. Mjj said

In all fairness, SABC has done alot to uplift local content. Mjj said

Quiet right, but at the expense of profit. Because the state and ICASA insist on local content they must bail out the sabc same way as the state bailed out the SAA. Realist said it

Once all this is said and done, they must put the same effort as when they were toyi toying. Have you seen the energy used when the union guys toyi toyi? Realist said it

Not to sound rude or nasty but i think people who are looking at this situation should shut up and stop analyzing the protest next week..their logical thinking does not help at all. Harambe24 said it.

As you can see MsDee, show me where Realist and Mjj say they do not support the strike. Read carefully this time at what Mjj was proposing. He did not just criticize only; he also offered an alternative solution to the problem.

You might not agree with me and Mjj but to say we are against the strike without showing us proof where we said we are against it is not fair, don’t you think so?

You said I was ignorant of the workings of the SABC and ask you to explain how it works and you could not come up with the explanation except Harambe 24. Would you please help in this regard so that I am not ignorant please?

@Realist…arguments as in points of view/opinions….said nothing bout whether you were for or against. I still say Authentic view’s argument/opinion/point of view is well put! Because it is!
As for the explanation on the in’s and outs of commissioning…Harambe24 got to it before me…and I found it clear and to the point…I wasn’t gonna insult your intelligence by reiterating what Harambe wrote now.
Take it easy Realist...much love... whatever rocks one's boat!

I'll send the email via PM Cande

Anyway do you know that STD bank got rid of a whole department (developers, testers etc) in favour of cheap labour from India? IBM is doing the same...in fact most big companies are doing that...so people in the IT industry are saying we wanna stand up and fight it now...gov must help us...we wanna be heard.

And honestly if I wasn't permanent with the co I work for-I'd have been a victim too.
