Was Shaka Zulu Gay?

Firstly I really don't  know what inspired me to write this article/blog. It's not easy to write a blog as you all know we've got people who will scrutinize each and every word you wrote, but then again what's the point of writing if there aren't people who will criticize your writing.

Most of you know that Alexandra The Great was gay/bisexual, thanks to the movie and the openness of the Western Media when it comes to issues of Sexuality.

Which makes me wonder how accurate and truthful is our history, well the one that we've been taught by our grandparents or at school.

We all know homosexuality is not something that just came into existence in the now 21st century but it's something that has been there since the days of Sodom and Gomorrah.

I watched one of the bible teaching by Creflo Dollar on dvd and I'm sure my Christian bloggers will help me out on this one as well, in that video Creflo was explaining the incident that happened between Noah and his son, and how Noah cursed his son for making him drunk and left him naked. Well he said that Noah's son got his father drunk and slept with him and that's the reason why he cursed him. He explained it so nicely I'll try to get an extract from that.

We've all heard people in the media and everywhere saying how unAfrican it is to be gay.

Apparently there's some evidence that Shaka Zulu was also gay and that he used to f**k his soldiers. This Zulu guy was busy bragging about how Shaka was a great warrior and that Sotho and Pedi Kings were cowards instead of fighting they hid in the mountains. When I mentioned that Shaka was Gay he nearly Klapped me.

if we're proud of our history we should be proud of it and its flaws. We also know about Queen Modjadji the Rain Queen and her many wives and the Bapedi people always defend her lesbianism  by saying that she does not sleep with those women, they're just her helpers in the Royal House.

Any Historical gay figures u know about please share cos I bet you no one is going to tell us about them.

I am also looking 4ward to the replies!!

But as a pedi gal....i am taken aback by this statement...
This Zulu guy was busy bragging about how Shaka was a great warrior and that Sotho and Pedi Kings were cowards instead of fighting they hid in the mountains.....sso wrong the zulu guy was regarding sotho and pedi kings.....and the key to the answer is "google" away.....

I think it is very sad how we dont know our history
i went on an expedition this year to find out the history of my people...i was so empowered from the very inner side of me...it was almost spiritual....untill then all i knew was the history of technology which is only relevant to my proffesion...but my knowing my history influenced a lot of the decisions i subsequently made about my future...

On that note: long live the spirit of kgosi Sekhukhune (the short dude) long live!!!!...

If he was killed by a potato?..it would be a less shamefull explanation for his death...however unfortunately his ultimate defeat was aided by balck brothas....(the anglo -pedi war)...and his ultimate death was by his own brother.....ssssad....but the man will remain a legend in my books....

Tjo, you'll have to forgive me because this is gonna be an article within an article.  Maddie, let me explain what is said about Noah and His son. Genesis 9:20-25 says
"20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded [a] to plant a vineyard. 21 When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father's nakedness and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father's nakedness. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father's nakedness.
24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said, "Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers."

You said" how Noah cursed his son for making him drunk and left him naked"

firstly your statement there is the lie on behalf of Creflo Dollar , he wouldnt say that because he knows that Noah got drunk by himself, no one made him drunk, upon his drunkeness got naked and laid on his tent all by himself, his son was not there. The son ONLY saw his father lying there drunk and naked and he went to tell his other brothers, who in turn saw that was the embarrasment, they then took a garmet, put it on their shoulder, walked backwards(so that they will not see their father naked) and covered their father.
It is only when Noah was sober that the two brothers told him what happened and then He curse his grandson Canan, not his son. so please get your facts straight.

and the reason why he cursed his grandson was, in the ancient bible times, families were united so if you curse one member of the family, that family and it's generations was gonna be cursed and live under that curse. Ham(Noah's son) was under Noah's family, so if he cursed him, he would have cursed his own family, so he had to curse someone under his sone generation and he cursed his grandson because his father after he seeing him drunk and naked, he didnt hide his father's shame but instead went out to gossip about it, had he taken it to himself to hide his father's disgrace, no one else would have known what he did, only themselves.

yazi the bad thing here is , our generation is so driven by sexual immoralities and that's why they turn to associate everything with sex, . hhayi bathong.

Maddie...  a little bit of reaserach a reading goes a long way....

The "wives of a queen" are not  "actual wives", that's why you'd find them pregnant, impregnated by the man chosen by the Queen's councilor to do so. Well im not sure how it happens in Pedi but i dont thing the Queen is a lasbian. Those women are called "queen's servant", they are there to help in the royal house, like in any other royal house. If the queen and the servants are lesbians, then how do they get the queen's successor, because it has to be a queen's daughter? where does the queen get a child? because from what i know, the Quuen's counsil do choose a queen's sexual patner so that bezothola a child who'll take over when the queen is no more?

@BA

It's a pity that I don't have the Creflo Dollar tape, but please if u do find it please listen to it very carefully and you'll get what I'm trying to say and please share it with bloggers as well, I'll try to find it too.

BA - am sure u know that the bible was not originaly written in English but in Hebrew or Greek u'll correct me if I'm wrong, and Creflo was explaining the correct Hebrew/Greek meaning of some of the words in that verse you quoted. You also know that when the bible talks about nakedness it does not mean the actual nakedness of not wearing anything but something shameful.

as for Queen Modjadji's helpers being impregnated by other men and having babies -  sleeping with other men does not necessarily mean they cannot sleep with other women as well .

I'll come back with more answers to some of your questions later

Best-Achiever
19 Jun 2009 08:44

LOL

Maddie
You said " how Noah cursed his son for making him drunk and left him naked"

Creflo Dollar would never say that because the bible itself doesnt say that unless if he wasnt reading from the versions of the bible that i know of, Noah got drunk all by himself. Yes i know nakedness is associated with shame in some instances, but then what makes you think that, the shame they are referring to is sex and not the drunkness(also bear in mind that in some instances it means just that naked). Noah's drunkness was enough shame on its own.

sleeping with other men does not necessarily mean they cannot sleep with other women as well
hehhehe, tell me about it, what proof do you have that they sleep with both women and men????

like i said before, our generation is do driven with sexual immorality to such an extend that we turn everything to be about sex .... hhayi Maddie.

You know it's difficult to have proof of same sex relations cos you can't have tangible results like babies.

that is why it's even difficult for people to come to terms with the fact that Shaka might have been gay cos there are no babies to prove that.

Angisiye uchwepheshe kwezomlando, kodwa into engiyaziyo ukuthi ubudlelwane phakathi kuka Senzangakhona noNandi babungebuhle hle. (His parents' relationship was illicit. Senzangakhona even denied partenity, claiming Nandi was not pregnant but suffering from iShaka beetle, whatever that was) UNandi wabe eyindodakazi yenkosi (chief) yaseLangeni. USenzangakhona wake wazama ukwenza uNandi umfazi wakhe wesithathu. UShaka nonina baze bahlala esigodlweni esasingaseBabanango esabe sibizwa ngokuthi kusesiKlebheni. Yingakho abulala izindimbane zabantu ukuba zendlalele unina ethuneni ngesikhathi eseshonile.

Lapha ngizama ukucacisela uMaddie ukuthi indlela ayeziphethe ngayo uShaka yabe ingaphathelene nezocansi(sexual orientation) kodwa uShaka ngenxa yokuhlukumezeka i-judgement yakhe yabe yakha isithombe esingesihle. Njengomuntu obebuza ukuthi uShaka wabe e-Gay na? Impendulo yami ithi cha, uShaka wayehlukumezekile (he had a very traumatic childhood), yonke into wayezama ukuyisombulula ngendluzula(violence). Ukusondelana nomuntu wesifazane (Being intimate with a woman) wayekuthatha njengobuvaka (being weak). Yingakho engazange agcagcelwe. (he was never married). Yingakho amabutho empi (warriors) ayeganwa esemadala kakhulu. (Zulu warriors got married when they were almost sixty years old, when they retired from Shaka's arm forces with very young Zulu maidens). Ngayifunda naleyo yokuvulwa esiswini kowesimame owabe ekhulelwe, angeke ngigxile kangako kuyo. Kungenzeka ukuba Lembe eleqa amanye amalembe ngokukhalipha ukuthi labe li-gay ayikho inkinga nalapho, ngumbono wakho Maddie, kodwa ngokwethu uShaka akazange asondelane nabantu besifazane ngoba wayekhul ngokuhlukumezeka. There are many versions in history about his life, kodwa-ke mina ngikholwa yile.

Kulabo abathi uShaka wabe emubi angazi ukuthi bakhuluma ngani ngoba umuntu owabe emubi kwabe kunguHenry Cele, uHenry akayena uShaka, kwakungathathwa noma iyiphi nje indoda ngesikhathi kuqoshwa umdlalo, uHenry waba senhlanhleni ngalesosikhathi. Azovuka umbhejazane maddie amaZulu athathe izikhali uma ezwa ukuthi ukhuluma kanje. Ngingomunye wawo, ngikholwe. Uyohlala usinda nje ngoba awubonwa muntu, ukuba kuthiwa ubukhuluma phambi kwabantu ubuzoyikhotha imbenge yomile. Sengicela ukwehla ngobona, yimi owakho maddie, nalo ikheli ngenhla.

MADDIE!!! Pedi Kings never interacted with Shaka Sotho Kings never interacted with Shaka .... The Zulus could not overcome the Sothos because the Sothos overwhelmed them back with Rocks from a great and overwhelming height! Shaka could not have been gay .... Homosexuality, like rape was punishable by death in Zululand during Shaka's time ... Creflo must have been blazing because there's no such story in the book ... It is Lot's daughters who got him drunk and squeezed his Quimm in order to have children .... want to talk incest ... let's go at it, but Shaka gay, interacting with Sotho and Pedi Kings, and Lot's Homo-incestuous son .... Methinks you also be blazing!!!

i remember it appeald to my opinion about society too much....in that we (society) usually create the monsters we live in.......

And u r ryt....there r many versions about our history....but knowing is empowering, we just have to be wise nd try to dcern the truth from all that we hear....

i think maddie she is just curious like any other person who want to know
Apparently there's some evidence that Shaka Zulu was also gay if shaka didn't have any children or wife this might mean that he was a gay

green arrow help me on this one if i am wrong
in a pedi culture when a king died of disease or killed from a battle we don't
actually say it straight that what killed the king we can say mabu a utswitswe or morena o tsere ke phiri and i think this of kgosi sekhukhune killed by potatoes come from there
Kgosi Sekhukhune is the dude who killed by potato????

BigMama
22 Dec 2009 14:59

@madleza.....As for children maybe the guy was infertile, and the wife because he was a soldier he did not get time to marry.

l would like to see the concrete evidence then l will believe that the Zulu warrior was indeed gay.

Apparently there's some evidence that Shaka Zulu was also gay if shaka didn't have any children or wife this might mean that he was a gay if not then why *bleep!* the soldiers and we all know that this kind of things in our cultures are disgrace if may be u nkosi shaka do it in public and marry a men he might have been killed or dethroned

green arrow help me on this one if i am wrong
Kgosi Sekhukhune is the dude who killed by potato????
in a pedi culture when a king died of disease or killed from a battle we don't actually we don't  say  straight  what killed the king  we can say (mabu a utswitswe or morena o tsere ke phiri and i think this of kgosi sekhukhune killed by potatoes come from there they didn't want to be specific of what killed the bapedi king and the y were so clever b'coz even today people still believe tha he was killed by potato)

Queen Modjadji the Rain Queen and her many wives and the Bapedi people always defend her lesbianism i think queen modjadji
she is not lesbian it is the culture of balobedu nation that they are ruled by queens not kings and those women in the palace are queens advisory the one who decide who amongst the men in the kingdom shall come and be the queens partner  and give her the baby/heir

Of course he was gay!
All the symptoms are there.
An insatiable obcession with his mother Nandi, he hated his father, he was never married, he never fathered a child, he never allowed his impi`s to marry until almost old age(remember that life expectancy was a lot lower than today) and the only person to ever share his sleeping quaters was a young white Scotsman named Robert Moffat.
This is all documented by the Scandinavian missionaries who lived in Shaka`s kraal during that time.
Oh yes he also had a treacherous mind.

What a load of bull! King Shaka- gay? Maddie, where is this this so called evidence that the King was gay?  And Doug, where might one find this documentation you write of. The King did father a child but it was still-born, so get your facts straight and stop spreading nonsensical propaganda- it's immature and disrespectful.  i have to agree with you best achiever there are " servants " at the royal home, they are not called wifes they are like personal assistants to the queen. remember its odd to meet the queen with a bucketful of water over her head coz fectching water was part of the chores that women wud perfom bac then.

on the issue of children, the royal family wud choose someone from the famiy or heir clan to bear children with the queen in order to keep the royal blood. remember the royal queen shud be  of theroyal      blood djadji clan     issoo huge.

i dn know of this lesbian nonsense

In some cases, feelings put aside. When a man sleeps with other man, it is seen as the sign of superiority to the cuplrit. While the victim is seen to be losing his manhood if he is raped by another. Like in jail, the gang leader will rape others to make himself respected and feared. We dont know what Shakas orientation was, but maybe his, sleeping with his soldiers (if true), it was his way of showing them who is the greatest. And even if he was gay, thats nothing we can be angry about. Gays are also our brothers and like it or not they were created by God. They are sinners, like all of us.

13 Mar 2014 12:36

Oh guys, guys, the man was gay. Where on earth have u heard of an African chief without a wife? African Kings and Chiefs had wives, some up-to 500 of them. the man was gay, finish and klaar!!!!! That's why he was so cruel, he was frustrated, he couldn't express his sexuality.. and we know that he tried to have a heterosexual relationship just to cover up, hence he killed or threatened to kill his newly born son 'cos he couldn't stand himself as a father. His best friend Mzilikazi broke ranks with him after realizing that he is gay, and he wouldn't have a gay king. Dingaan killed him, cos they had discovered that he was gay and it was an embarrassment to have a king with no wife, who is bonking men. Some men that he killed it was because they had turned his advances down.. the man was gay bo!!!!

Recently all of the black leaders and historic figures has been deemed gay. There was talk that Martin L. King was with Mr Baynard. Malcolm was gay. The slaves were LBGT on slaves ships and plantations. I am sure that Harriett Tubman and Marcus Garvey and other black historic figures will be deemed as being gay. This is actual an attack on Black history and it is soooooo blatant. Why now at this time in history when being gay is accepted that this is happening and more importantly WHERE IS THE PROOF? In the history of Africa…..they were and still today are not gay friendly. Imagine Shaka Zulu catching a gay couple, knowing his character.
