Special Assignment this week:
Episode Title: Vuk’uzenzele
Broadcast date: Tuesday, 30 June 2009
Fall-out from the global economic crunch, corruption, poverty, unemployment and service delivery failure ... the litany of ailments afflicting our once radiant rainbow nation seem endless.
But in the midst of cynicism and disillusionment, South Africa continues to be a country of heroes. Where government has failed to deliver they have stepped forward, transforming the rubble of despair into bricks and mortar of hope.
They exemplify the Xhosa phrase, “Vuk’uzenzele" (stand up; take action!) by taking ownership of their communities and providing services to children already short-changed by society.
Such is the stature of Indy Kawana - a woman who has built the Elundini Centre - a haven for 33 severely disabled children in Du Noon - an impoverished township on the periphery of Cape Town.
This is the only treatment and resource centre for children with disabilities in the township. Despite progressive government policies, children with disabilities, living in townships such as Du Noon, often have no access to even the most rudimentary therapeutic, medical, educational or social services.
Without Indy’s assistance they would be left to languish alone, defenceless and vulnerable to abuse. Without any formal qualifications, armed only with the desire to make a difference, she has instilled confidence, hope and emotional healing in the children, without any assistance from government.
The show is produced by Hazel Friedman.
Special Assignment is on SABC3 on Tuesdays at 20h31.
