The series
Who Do You Think You Are? has been on SABC2 for the past six weeks. It started with a look at the family history of actress
Nthathi Moshesh and ends this Sunday (at 2100) with
Jabulani Tsambo aka HHP aka Jabba.
The episode was supposed to be on last week but it was held over 'til this Sunday - there was something up with the tape apparently. It's one of two documentaries from the series that are screening at the Encounters Film Festival - currently on at Nu Metro, Waterfront in Cape Town.
It made it's debut last Friday night (4 July) and Jabba was in the thick of the action to catch it for the first time - he hadn't seen any of it yet.
I hotfooted through to the screening to scoop what was going on and was tickled to spot his fiance Lerato Khanye with him ...
HHP spent all his time signing autographs, having pics taken, answering questions etc so I gathered goss from Lerato in between.
Lerato and Jabba have been dating for eight years, they've been engaged for one, they're currently labola'ing before their wedding and needless to say she was also quizzy to see the show i.e. "Who am I actually marrying?!"
I've been wondering whether or not the show
actually does what it says - if it has the impact of making each person know-know themselves more and word from Lerato is that it does.
Apparently Jabba seemed more zenned out and settled in himself when he got back from filming the show. Filming for each episode lasts six days and during that time he investigated both sides of his parent's family.
He travelled to Mozambique and even managed to find an entire village with the same surname as him so he finds out
exactly where he comes from and what his influences are.
Coolest - is that he properly realised why he's created his Motswako musical style. After the show he chatted to the audience in a Q-and-A setup -
- and said that he's always felt he that he isn't part of one particular group: he has a Zulu name, a Shangaan surname, speaks Tswana and often gets told he has a "white nose".
Through the show he discovers how all the pieces fit together to make him who he is - and also, how it's directly impacted on his music being such a vibey mix.
He finds out that his great grandfather (I think it is - could be great, great grandfather) was super famous and influential in Bafokeng; and he visits his great uncle, which was verry emotional.
Lerato said that this was a mega moment for him 'cos when he met his great uncle he felt as if he was meeting his grandfather who passed away - as she was telling me I couldn't stop tears plopping (when they just sort of arrive), very blind but there was just something about it.
They show the scene in the show so you get to see how he felt.
I'd defs recommend catching it on Sunday.
Lerato and Jabba seconds before the show started
Other things to lookout for:
Jabba's expression when he discovers his great grandfathers legacy in Bafokeng.
His great uncle's newspaper clippings.
His mom (Jabba's - not his great uncles.)
A HHP mix he does towards the end.
Part 2 of the series will be on early next year. Here's who'll be in it:

Dawn Matthews (Actress) - this episode's also been on at Encounters
Colin Moss (Presenter, Actor) - releasing a bigscreen Hollywood film today, more news on Snaparazzi next week.
Zapiro (Cartoonist)
