Coming up on
3rd Degree tonight (21 July 2009):
Episode Title: Snake-Oil Salesmen & Voodoo
Broadcast date: 21 July 2009
Tonight's 3rd Degree features the documentary that won a
CNN/MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year Award for HIV/Aids reporting.
The awards were held on Saturday night (18 July) in Durban and the award was won by Anna-Maria Lombard, who produced the documentary for
Health -e News Service.
This is what it's about:
3rd Degree goes in search of snake-oil salesmen and voodoo scientists who offer quick-fix treatments for HIV. They are clearly after one thing only - money - and in many instances embellish their so-called cures with pseudo-scientific jargon, leading people with HIV to believe they will be helped.
The only scientifically proven treatment for HIV and AIDS remains anti-retrovirals. In fact, anti-retrovirals have been so successful in changing the course of the epidemic that any proposed treatment in future would have to measure up to their success.
This documentary looks at the scam-artists who abuse the pandemic, as well as the consequences.
3rd Degree is on e.tv and the eNews Channel (DStv Channel 403) on Tuesday's at 21h30.
