3rd Degree:
Episode Title: Where's My Food?
Broadcast date: 4 August 2009
Tonight 3rd Degree investigates what is rapidly becoming a crisis in South Africa - the huge increase in obese children.
Just two-years-old, Tyra can only fit into clothes meant for teenagers. She weighs 30kgs, twice as much as her playmates. Her heart is under severe pressure and experts warn that if she continues like this, she will never see her 10th birthday.
South Africa is increasingly becoming a nation of fatties, our offspring among them. One in four kids is addicted to television and does virtually no physical exercise. Many gorge on fast foods and sugar and end up severely obese, a condition that can lead to heart disease, diabetes, attention deficit disorder and eye sight problems, among others.
The result: obese children are in severe danger - abdominal fat is the world’s number one killer, claiming more than 17 million lives each year.
3rd Degree investigates the problem and looks at solutions.
3rd Degree is on e.tv and the eNews Channel (DStv Channel 403) on Tuesday's at 21h30.
