Coming up on Carte Blanche (16 August):

Gastric Bypass

Obesity can lead to desperate measures, like weight-loss surgery. A gastric bypass operation, if performed correctly, is an effective long-term strategy and perfectly safe. But there are doctors who prey on the vulnerability and ignorance of those who will do anything to look “normal”.

Carte Blanche exposes an outdated practice still being allowed by health authorities despite being banned in the rest of the world.

Presenter: Bonita Gorrie-Nuttall
Producer: Sophia Phirippides
Journalist: Quereshini Naidoo

Chicks 2

Two weeks ago, Carte Blanche exposed unacceptable practices at a poultry farm in the North-West, belonging to the former MEC for Agriculture and his son. The farm, one of the biggest in the country, breeds hens for the egg industry. But it was what happened to male chicks that had viewers and animals’ rights groups outraged and retailers taking action.

Carte Blanche covers the latest on a story that has taken a new turn.

Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender
Producer: Susan Puren
Jounalist: Wynand Grobler

Black Aces

Since 1937, Witbank has been home to the Black Aces football team. Once minnows relegated to lower divisions, the club is now in the Premiership and will be receiving a million rand a month from the PSL. But that’s apparently not good enough to practise at the local stadium, which seems to be the home of rugby. A high court battle looms - is this racism or realism? Carte Blanche investigates.

Presenter: Devi Sanakree Govender
Producer: Kate Barry
Journalist: Xoli Matomela

Carte Blanche is on M-Net on Sundays at 19h30.
