Episode Title: Fix It Mr Break It
Broadcast Date: Wednesday, 19 August 2009 at 21h30
Channel: SABC2
This year’s winter has seen soup kitchens spring up throughout the city of Jozi, blanket drives and other steps to help ease the icy temperature, yet not everyone could be helped.
Somewhere in Small Township was Mmapula, a 46 year old mother of two was left out in the cold. Mmapula had an RDP House in Garankuwa that was demolished when a truck drove into it.
On the 9th of February 2009, a huge Elite truck carrying building material drove by her street - as was the norm - but unfortunately the brakes failed and it came crashing into Mmapula’s house. Her possessions and her memories were damaged beyond repair. Mmapula had to adapt to using candles as well as cooking with a paraffin stove.
Horrified at the catastrophe she conducted an investigator to see who the owner of the truck was. The trail led her to Mr Fezel - an esteemed businessman who owns a building company Elite Constructions in the area. She agreed verbally with Mr Fezel that he would fix her house.
She wrote to Speak Out because although her house was rebuilt, it was not done well at all. She's subsequently had to buy bricks so that she can fix it up properly herself.
She wants her house to be restored to the way it was originally.
Dosto goes out to see if he find answers as to why her house wasn't fixed properly in the first place.
