Coming up on Motswako on Monday (14 September 2009):

The world has been gripped by the questions around star athlete, Caster Semenya’s sexuality. The questions around this 18 year old talent have raised many a question about our societal precedents, and the impact that these can have on one’s life.

Tonight Motswako celebrates her courage amidst everything she's going through.

Motswako is on SABC2 on Mondays at 21h30.

Caster Semenya has a unique condition of possessing remnants of both male and female genitalia. Intersexuality, as it is known scientifically, is indeed a rarity in 'higher' animals. With this condition, if an individual can not function as both a male and a female reproductively, it is more correctly termed pseudohermaphrodite. The rarest of this pseudohermaphrodite condition is a male pseudohermaphrodite in which an individual appears, phenotypically, female but whose internal genitalia are those representing “maleness.” Caster Semenya appears to be this type. A colleague and I have been studying a unique form of intersexuality on remote islands of the archipelago of Vanuatu in the Southwest Pacific since 1993.( See www.swpacificresearchfoundation.com)
On certain isolated islands intersexual pigs are found possessing this condition. On Vanuatu, pigs are woven into the very fabric of traditional life. Male pseudohermaphroditic pigs can be found here in relative abundance and nowhere else in the world. Occasionally intersexes are identified in pig and cow slaughter houses throughout the world. Because these unique pigs are revered by the villagers in Vanuatu that still practice “Kastom”, this condition is purposely bred for, thus perpetuating the condition. A man's value in a Vanuatu village is proportional to how many pigs he owns. These intersexual pigs are worth one hundred “normal” pigs and are, indeed, a valuable commodity.
Because of our research, another mammal species with this condition has been identified which will enable us to learn more about this condition in humans.

So far that she is a hermaphrodite is an allegation, which was unfortunately leaked to the aussie journalist......
Why does everybody keep referring to the situation as if its a fact??

i watched how she received a heros welcome and theres talks of naming a stadium after her,THIS ALL AT AGE 18. NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS NOBODY CAN TAKE THAT FEELING SHE FELT WHEN SHE WON AND THE WAY SOUTH AFRICANS RECEIVED HER AWAY FROM HER.. BIG UPS GAL

she is just cheerful, happy and still celebrating everithing her own way and i love the fact that she doesnt let this whole thing affect her....her voice is not even that deep(well to me)

I mean if she is willing to let tht responsibilty propell her to achieve even greater heights i think its cool, but i hope it doesnt beocme a huge burden on her, Bcos 20 yrs down the line,we will wanna know how the person after whon the stadium was name is doing.....

This is becoming more and more complicated....so if she truelly is is a hermaphodite, would that mean that she cannot compete with either males or females?? South Africans are very sensitive and we should get down to the bottom of the matter, how best can we help her come up with policies if needs be to address these kind of situations be it in our schools and workplace.

i hear ur point Holiday, but then again they will know that it was done when she was celebrated for her achievements that time. surely the will be stories or even books talking about her life in general and her truimphs and accomplishments dnt u think, even worse now that her news its not only south african, its worldwide (hope u understand what im trying to say)

Can anyone of us imagnie what she is going through? It brings tears to my eyes everytime i hear her name. I mean come on people...Talk about the last straw that breaks a camel's back.... I read in the Sunday Times that the very lawyers who represented Oscar Pistorious (The Blade Runner) against IAAF when they did not want him to compete against the able bodied athletes... I hope they take them to the cleaners. I can see they have a thing for us SAns.

To show how desperate she really was to prove to the world that she IS a girl, she even posed for YOU..make up and all. Phat Joe also had a problem with that toooooooo.

I spoke to a lawyer friend of mine about this - she says the press can always argue that it's in the public's interest to know this information. So even though we all have a right to privacy, if the press can argue that it's something that the public SHOULD know, then they can do this. It's similar to the Clinton / Lewinsky scandal - they had a right to privacy, but the media argued that it was affecting Clinton's ability to lead the country, so they had tostep aside as the info ran. There's never objectivity in journalism - you can only strive to be objective, but with critical political economy of the media, you'll find that certain media outlets take a certain stance, and that's the kind of coverage that will continue to be provided.

So we have different sexes - women, men, intersex / hermaphrodite. Why don't they have a separate athletics competition for intersexed individuals? Like we have disabled events - it's probably a minute form of discrimination, on the one hand, but on the other, they are catered for and won't then be ignored completely by the ruling bodies and powers that be. She's been socialised to be a woman, which is something that can never be taken away from her. But if they prove that she has an 'unfair' advantage over other runners because of the hormone imbalance and other things, then specific sporting events make sense.
