Julius Malema (1 December 2009)

On 3rd Degree this Tuesday (1 December, 2009):

Episode Title: Julius Malema
Broadcast date: 1 December 2009

Teaser ...

Julius Malema grabs more media attention than just about any other local politician. He has a sound bite for every occasion and pulls the race card regularly and fearlessly.

Some call him a fool, yet as head of the ANCYL he clearly knows what young people think - and what they want to hear.

It would seem he also has a hotline to the top. When he said the charges against Jacob Zuma would be dropped - they were. When he said that the then president Thabo Mbeki would be recalled - he was.

He’s the politician that many people love to laugh at. But as his influence grows, 3rd Degree asks: who is the joke really on?

3rd Degree is on e.tv at 21h30.

Now 3rd degree this is the kind of reporting i would love to watch...the joke is on us, Julious' rhetoric should not be taken lightly, he's got massive influence and the ANC leaders/ elders are even scared of him.  In all fairness other times he does speak the truth and sense.

Global climate convention is upon us..and there is an out cry about some climategate to continue polarising views.....im presonally tired now...someone knos something and we are cracking our heads trying to figure it out...

Too many conspiracies (theories) sometimes it seems better not to get worked up coz its invain more often thn not....better to focus on one's hustles and contribute our bits to the unseen (but very impprtant) moral pillars tht are anchoring the world..

My…my…. what a sad 1st Dec indeed.
If that’s what investigative journalism is about…its disgusting…Debra gives other journalists such a bad name. Juju might be stupid BUT Debra was so patronizing it was sickening. Her voice over were just as patronizing to all ANCYL members. I was so disgusted.

I wonder if it had anything thing to do with a better conduct of the English lingo. I really wonder if Juju was allowed to speak his mother tongues if she would still have had so much condescending power.

Just as Juju is stupid Debra is equally a disgrace to journalism….. sis maan. Sis to her crew making Juju look all dark.(interview in white shirt was so badly lit).

Gosh Debra its time you step down & move on clearly you've lost your mojo...You remind me of Mugabe...he was also hot once upon a time...

Juju knew the score when he went for the interview. I don't think Debra strapped him to the chair and forced him to sit through the interview. he could have walked off at anytime he felt that she was being condescending. So really your argument doesn't wash with me.

Sis to her crew making Juju look all dark.(interview in white shirt was so badly lit).
This has nothinng to do with journalism. Journalism has nothing to do with lighting and wearing a white or dark shirt.

02 Dec 2009 09:19

Damn, I had visitors just as the show was about to start, i missed it but i beg to differ with those who think that Malema is stupid.  Except the comment he made about Zuma's "rape" victim, in most cases he does speak sense.  So what is the verdict. who is the joke on???

02 Dec 2009 09:22

i've always thought he was jst a dummy, maar maobane.. naaayy, that guy know what he is doing and he come across very naive, unintelligent etc, and we all fall for that, then he strikes..... i was looking attentively @ him yesterday, He is none of that..

joke was on debs yesterday..

MsDee
02 Dec 2009 09:40

@Ingenuity- TV is a totally different medium from newspapers & radio right????....Its all visuals...The reason there is lighting in the 1st place is to avoid making people dark n nasty if journalism wasn’t about that I bet we wouldn’t have lighting in news & current affairs studios.
I appreciate that my language argument is not washing well with you…. Good...you are entitled to your opinion.

But when it comes to the effect that lighting and sound have on productions, including news...Please you so off the mark its not even funny...Just as Debra was off the mark last night. Do you know to what extent a shot can be manipulated just using light???????

Sbam I'm so with you...joke was on debs yesterday......she was so lousy I crinched everytime she opened her mouth.
And I dont like Juju at all...Buti Manamela is and  remains the only credible youth leader  we have in the country communist or NOT....

02 Dec 2009 09:59

@MsDee

if you look at the settingin which the interviews took place then you would understand th irrelevance of lighting in this case. They were in His office not in Studio. Besides if Juju is dark he is dark. No amount of lighting will change this.

I also think that people have the wrong idea about the show yesterday. It was not atypical interview but more a social chat with him to get his opinions on certain matters. I absolutely think that Debra used a different approach to the interview. It was more informal than formal studio interviews Debra normally conducts.

I also dont see why the Language barrier must be used as an excuse- he chose to be in politics therefore speaking English is a prerequisite.

Tholi: He is a quick thinker and can avoid answering questions very well. However the fact still remains that he makes he is not the sharpest tool in the box and he can make a lot of noise

@GML lighting can never be irrelevant...and I bet they had lighting with them there in his office... it was just badly done...Besides if Juju is dark he is dark. No amount of lighting will change this. -And yes lighting can make a difference don’t matter weather you blue or black but then again that's a technical argument that we can let go for now...

@Unfortunately GML not all of us had access to model C schools...so yes we speak English differently and express ourselves differently on different level depending how well you parents did during apartheid.
And for now the argument that people should stay away from certain jobs coz of English its silly especially knowing where we come from as a country and were we are, so yes today many still struggle to express themselves fully in English and I will continue giving them slack for that.  Especially coz they are trying and not letting that stand in the way of their dreams and hopes.

Believable; Convincing; Trustworthy; Reliable; Realistic; the list is endless. In case you are wondering, these are synonyms to the word credible. I guess according to you MsDee Julius is all of those things and more.

But when it comes to the effect that lighting and sound have on productions, including news. I noticed you didn't say journalism, I have copied my statement below; in case you missed it.
Journalism has nothing to do with lighting and wearing a white or dark shirt. (maybe Debra told him to wear a white shirt; so he can look even darker)

MsDee there are alot of people who did not go to Model C schools , who have bantu education and they are able to comprehend  and understand the basic concept of English. Please lets not do people the injustice of tainting them with the same brush as that tool called Malema.

I know of people who have never set foot at school and are able to hold their own when it comes to communicating in English.

How  you speak English has nothing to do with how  well your parents did during apartheid , thats lazy debating

GML
02 Dec 2009 10:32

@Ms Dee.

My boss has been interviewed on so many occasions in his office and the camera crew had no lighting. It is not relevant. What do you want? Proper lighting or Content?

Using lighting as a way to deviate from the truth that we saw last night is very low. The interview was a casual chat between the two and was not intended to be formal. If that were the case Debra would have asked him to remove the cap he was wearing. And Julius would have also worn more formal clothing.

This has nothing to do with lighting but everything to do with Julius and his thoughts and opinions on certain issues such as politics, land issues etc.

And for now the argument that people should stay away from certain jobs coz of English its silly especially knowing where we come from as a country and were we are, so yes today many still struggle to express themselves fully in English and I will continue giving them slack for that.
What's silly is that people still use this as an excuse to say and do wrong.
Everytime something doesnt work for us we use the race card and the language barrier as an excuse. There are tools to help people improve themselves

@Maddie-

I observed that too and I realised that he enjoys making a lot of noise. It's a natural high for him

Just because someone speaks english with a twang doesn't mean that they are speaking proper English. We are talking about the basics. You don't have to speak with an accent to show that you can speak in english.

The interview was a casual chat between the two and was not intended to be formal....i agree with u GML...and with Maddie 's observations.
Howver i think that both parties had their own agendas coming to the "casual" meeting, Julius came prepared coz he knew that as a journo Debra was gonna pull a afst one on him, so he  was prepared to do what he does best...make a noise and answer questions as they usually do "we say what we mean and mean what we say"..the smirk he had..very julius.
Debra on the other hand came there with the intention to squeez out the stupidity out of him expecting him to yiled to the idea of ever having been wrong...which didnt happen. She was soo condescending tht it took away from the cerdibility in her questions..almost as if he stooped down ti his level..and for the smirk and arrogance he displayed in his reponses i know for a fact that a lot of young people found it to be "cool" sadly....

So whatever the intent of the interview...in the end Julius ame out the julius tht everyone who follows the press knows..no bending whatsoever.....and uhm Debra hmm..she was owned bad.....
The realy heartburning issue about the hwole thing is the praise i see hailed ti him on facebook and inconverstaions
Hwo is the joke on...defs not Julius...perhaps Debra and everyone againts him....

but i worry GML though tht its only those who can tell tht he was going round cicles regarding the communismn and progressive activist what what that saw the idiocity about him. Its mostly only those who have held the view tht he is problematic whose views were consolidated. Otherwise, It worries me that the smirk and arrogance with which handled the interview impressed a lot of young minds...hell i hate that i even admit that inspite of Debra's efforts to point out the lack of intelliegence about him..somehow in the end, superficially looking at it..he did not yield as did Chuene....

And i can imagine the talk in the ancyl office over heineken...:Yaaa comrades, we are not scared of white little rasist girls bla bla bla....i dont see any progres after all this...it was just another publicity opportunity for him.

It certainly is not for the faint hearted.

I guess we can only question the kind of people the ANCYL has as it's members. If they can allow/vote such a person to lead and represent them.

It also worries me that the way he handled the interview means that all other ignorant people in the country will start admiring him and possibly even start supporting him. The use of big words in politics means that you're "intelligent" to other people even bloggers.

Its funny GA that he even made reference to Chuene caving in and he made it a personal mission to ensure that he does not suffer the same defeat.

Is the country in trouble???? Remains to be seen

But I must say....he held his own during the whole interview, and I was impressed with him. And my conclusion ever since that day was that, he's not as stupid as he seems!

@Ingenuity For me it helps with the confidence and expression of the language but not necesarily speaking the languge better.
Hallelujah, thank you cleve, this is the point I was trying to make.

Cleve thank you for clarifying Ingenity's point maybe if Juju had the same Debra would'nt have had so much condescending power...just maybe???????

@ cleve....It certainly gives cofidence...but I insist better expression 2..lets agree to disagree...you also find lots of people with broken english speaking with such admirable confidence......

Life is not fair Andi, I learned that the hard way. In order to get ahead in life you need more than just qualifications or hard work for that matter.
It is not only inside the ANC where such is happening but it is life in general

Just because Julius is in politics does not mean that he has to have great command of the English language. It has nothing to do with his office. I have a friend who married a German guy. She says in Germany they are very patriotic about their language and force you to speak Dutch whether you like it or not. They won't answer if you ask in English even if they understand what you are saying.

We were brought up speaking our mother tongues and nobody should expect us to be great in a language that is not ours. In fact we should insist on asking for a journalist who can speak our own language and have the interviews in our own language and they can have subtitles if they want but seriously we should stop thinking less of our african people because of the way they speak the English language.

Personally I like Malema. He calls a spade a spade and has the guts to say what we wish to say but do not have the guts to say it. I do not care if he sounds careless when he speaks the fact is crap is crap no matter how you sugar coat it.

andi01
02 Dec 2009 15:39

I know fruity- but the ANC claims to be looking out for the people

We all know that Malema is a disrespectful-ignorant-little worm, so lets go beyond that and actually listen when he speaks, sometiimes he does make sense. (just turn the volume down, and sort of paraphrase wateva he said).

Walking Eagle

On a recent trip to the United States, Julius Malema, President of the African National Congress Youth League, addressed a major gathering of Red Indians. He spoke for almost an hour on his plans for South Africa .

At the conclusion of his speech, the crowd presented him with a plaque inscribed with his new Indian name - Walking Eagle.

A very chuffed Malema then departed in his motorcade, waving to the crowds. A news reporter later asked one of the Indians how they came to select the new name given to Malema.

They explained that Walking Eagle is the name given to a bird so full of *bleep!* that it can no longer fly.

@Green.Arrow
Redi already did an interview with Julius in March and she came 2nd best u cant debate with Malema John Robbie also tried it and he also came 2nd best.
Here's the link, I also have links to Tim Modise, Jenny Crys Williams interviews as well which were more serious than Deborah Patta's you cant debate with Malema no matter who you are.

Eish Mathaz...i just asked my political frnd what he meant by learningist (its what i heard)...apparently he said he is a LENINIST...a philosophy theory in the line of bo Maxism....hai ke...im just an engineer, thts byond my depths...

Talkin about my political friend...he just told me some freakin scary things about Malema and what goes on in SA politics....im too scared i think ima leave this ryt now..i got big dreams tht need to be fullfilled....

But its a tough predicament we are in.........damned if we dont probe and damned if we do...
