The world is filled with hate and pain, while she is invisible to everyone unless they want to inflict more pain, ridicule and embarrassment for Precious, played by Gabourey Sidibe. She constantly has to escape to a happy place in her mind where people shower her with love, admiration and fame as the harsh realities of her life are far too hard to handle.
Gabourey Sidibe as Precious with her mother Mary played by Mo'Nique
She lives with her parents who abuse her
daily; sexually, emotionally and physically. She is now pregnant with her second child by her father and gets expelled from school. Everybody just keeps failing Precious over and over again! Her mother, Her father, the school, the welfare systems... there is nowhere to go for help. Life is feeling even more dire for Precious, what options are available to her? Her maths potential gets her an entrance into an alternative school.
Mo'Nique as Precious mother, MaryAt this stage of the movie, I was rolling my eyes as I envisioned a reversed “To sir, with love”, “ “ and “Gangster’s Paradise“ ending - troubled and misunderstood child goes to a school with a multitude of other troubled souls then a dedicated teacher who then changes the class comes and they all end up fabulously intelligent. BUT I was so wrong! I was pleasantly surprised at how it did not deviate from the message it was trying to convey to the viewers.
Mariah Carey as Ms Weiss giving Precious counsellingThis Oprah and Tyler Perry production movie cast and acting is so wonderful, as they portray the characters emotions so well. Mo’Nique who is just so amazing in her character as Precious’ mother Mary is an Oscar winning performance indeed! I know I will get a lot of flak for this comment; BUT I felt Mariah Carey role as Ms Weiss is really a cameo. Her role as the counselor is big but her scenes are so short and few…
Paula Patton's potrayal of Ms Rain gives so much support and strength to Precious that she deserves a couple of awards for this... There is a hottie in this movie, Lennie Kravitz who adds a light touch of smiles to the viewers face.
the poster being used in South AfricaEvery movie lover should get themselves to their nearest theater (
with a box of facial tissues) to watch this movie…You will go through a myriad of emotions; anger, pain, disgust, heartbreak, shock and mostly horror from watching this movie. BUT it is more than worth watching as no one should have a life like Precious , but there are so many Precious children that sadly do. It gets a super 12/5 from me.
Precious starts showing at Nu-Metro theaters on 05 March 2010. Take a box of facial tissues with, you will need them.
The posters that I love!
