Club INC in Braamfontein celebrated our birthdays launching a Charity event in conjunction with Celebrities @ work, Chivas Regal and Lira. This gal has to be on the same level as Jill Scott, Mary J Blige and Alicia Keys.
Let me just start by saying – I was very excited about this show. Its intentions were very close to my heart – Charity work and partying. Lira was the main attraction with select celebs doing a fashion show of some sort. The charity Celebrities @ work: “Icons for a child” was launching their campaign and raising funds with partners Chivas Regal, Tag Heuer, Fabiani and Club Inc.
The press release said “
Celebrities @ Work: “Icons for a Child” is the latest advocacy event to create awareness of child hunger, while raising the necessary funds to help fight it.
It is well documented that exclusive fashion shows attract the ‘who is who’ from the World’s Social Elite and command unprecedented media attention.
The Campaign will capitalize on this fact by launching the over-all Campaign leading into the 2010 Golden Circle Awards by staging a High Profile Celebrity Awards show.
The glamour, glitz and wealth from the Celebrity and Fashion Industry will be used to create awareness and generate funds to help the millions of children suffering from hunger and hunger related diseases.”
I got lost getting to the club. Yes, there was no map with the invite and I figured I know Braamfy but got lost. I called Shugs for directions – Thanks, Brown Sugar! Eventually I found the club and struggled to find parking – I was elated as I figured that the club was packed. As we walked into the club the CHIVAS ladies smiled nicely and gave us a warm welcome, I got even more excited…
CHIVAS ladies And then we entered the club and there were only 15 people inside… Whoaaah!! I was told the event would start at 20:30, Lira would start performing at 21:00, I arrived at 20:55…
The scene as I walked in
There was just no way Lira would perform for 15 people unless this was really meant to be my private party… So, the wait began. The waiters were courteous and got us drinks but warned us – the tab is very limited. When we ordered our second drinks, we were told the tab was closed – at this point there were about 22 people. LOL! Jeeze, people DO NOT like clothes when going clubbing, neh? It was a bit of a culture shock to me the amount of people that rocked up in those tops that are meant for tights, wearing those as dresses. I am getting old!
Anywho, the MC Macfarlen Moleli walked out to start the show just a bit before 22:00 to announce the supporting act, Lulu and the celebrities that would walk the ramp in a fashion show and to showcase their support and participation in the campaign.
Lulu
The press release had mentioned the following "
campaign ambassadors - Lerato Kganyago, Mmabatho Montsho, Mbali Mlotshwa, DJ Cleo, Bantu Soul, Lungelo, DJ Switch, Zandi Msutwana, Noluthando Meje, Tumaole Mohlaoli and Afro-Soul Pop Artist Donald to mention but a few."
The celebrities… Spot the ones that made it…
After the fashion show, Sibu pledged her support for the campaign, invited the below gentleman onto the stage to also give a speech.
When I left the club, he was still partying.
To raise more funds, an auction was kicked off (somehow only one item got sold) – a 12 year old bottle of Chivas for R1000, the next item – a pvr decoder only received bids up to R3000 so the bid was paused indefinitely to allow people to go search their pockets.
The auction Bongani Nxumalo from Highveld 94.7 was the next supporting act to really warm us for Lira. I think he cooled some of us down, as I did not know a single song he sang. I believe he should have been Lulu’s supporting act.
At this point I just wanted Lira to come on stage and sing “Suk’ ondi mosheli ixhesha-xhesha-xhesha!”.
Lira finally came out and gave us a full hour and a half performance covering her hits; remembering Lebo Mathosa and Brenda Fassie (sang Weekend special) and some golden oldies. Yah, She made sure this campaign remains memorable. Halfway through her persomance she kicked off the heels (half the club joined her) and danced!!!
The rest of the campaign will be nationwide – Here are the details below, please support it.
