LostSeason 6, Episode 1LA X, Part 1Confused yet? You’re not the only one. You’d think that we’d be used to this feeling by now, but honestly, Lost excels in finding ways to make us feel confused a different way each season. But what an awesome start to what can only be an awesome season.
The episode starts exactly where it ended in Season 5 – with Juliet setting off the bomb. Only, it seems to have worked because here’s Jack on Flight 815. As he talks to Rose, they hit a patch of turbulence... but they make it through it fine. When Bernard gets back from the bathroom, Jack decides to visit the little boys room.
When he gets back to his seat, there’s someone sitting in one of the seats – Desmond! Jackass thinks that he looks familiar. As the plane flies on, we’re shown an aerial view of the ocean below and the camera zooms down into the ocean where we see the remains of the island and 4-toes. The island is completely underwater!
For the sake of this recap not being all over the place, I’ll break it into 3 different timelines. On the way to the bathroom yet again, Jackass bumps into Kate and the Marshall, and then bumps into Sawyer on his way back to his seat. Hurley and Artz are having a conversation and Sawyer listens in.
A doctor is paged for and Jackass goes off to the rescue. He’s joined by Sayid and together they save Charlie’s life. Charlie swallowed a bag of heroin, and he isn’t at all happy to see them. He tells Jackass that he should have left him alone; he was meant to die. Jackass gets back to his seat to find that Desmond is missing, and no-one knows where he went or remembers seeing him.
Meanwhile, Boone sits in the same aisle as Locke and the two strike up a conversation. Locke tells Boone that he went on a walkabout while Boone tells Locke that he went on a rescue mission (his sister who did not want to be rescued).
Also on the plane are Sun and Jin. Their relationship hasn’t changed at all and he tells her to button up her blouse. As the plane lands, Sayid looks at a photo of Nadia and Jin looks at the watch he has to deliver. The plane lands, Charlie is lead away in handcuffs, and the passengers begin disembarking – all except Locke who is waiting for his wheelchair.
Our second timeline takes us to the island to an unspecified time when we catch up with our Losties immediately after the crash. It’s evident that they have “jumped” or “flashed” through time. Kate and Miles find the site of the hatch to find it looking almost like it did when Locke didn’t push the button. Sawyer and Jack are there and Sawyer is furious with Jackass, telling him that it’s all his fault and that Juliet died in vain. Meanwhile, Hurley and Jin are with a dying Sayid when they hear the shouting. Jin races off to the shouting, but not before he tells Hurley that they have jumped through time.
Meanwhile, Kate hears a faint call for help and they realise that Juliet is alive. They frantically try and move the rubble so that they can get to her. When they are unable to move a particularly heavy piece of metal, Jin runs back to get the Dharma van. A distraught Sawyer tells Kate that he will kill Jack if Juliet dies.
As Hurley waits for Jin to return, he is visited by Jacob who is now a ghost. He tells Hurley that he cannot let Sayid die and that he needs to take him to the temple along with his guitar case. He tells him that Jin knows the way. Jin rushes back and they set of to the hatch site where they are able to move the piece of metal. Jackass tends to Sayid and when he confirms he cannot save him, Hurley says he knows how to save Sayid’s life.
Meanwhile, Sawyer jumps into the huge crater and finds Juliet, who is trapped under some metal and very badly hurt. She tells him that she set the bomb off and they share a kiss. She says to Sawyer that she needs to tell him something, but before she can, she dies.
Our third timeline, also on the island, takes us to Ben killing Jacob. Monster-Locke-Man-in-Black (but for the sake of my sanity, I’ll call him Monster-Locke) sends Ben out to call Richard. Ben, who is still in shock, goes outside to get Richard. Richard shows him Locke’s body and refuses to go back in. Four of Alana’s men force Ben inside and start shooting at Monster-Locke. He disappears and our smoke monster appears.
Ben hides while the monster kills them all. Ben is terrified and makes to leave. He turns around to see Monster-Locke behind who says that he is sorry that Ben had to see that.
Wow! Talk about action packed. So many things to discuss!!!
First, and foremost, I was ecstatic when they heard Juliet and I thought she made it. It’s absolutely cruel that they let Sawyer find her only to lose her again. My heart breaks for him. I hope that this is not the last we will see of her.
Key Points:• The major key point is the splitting of the timelines. We have so many timelines going on here, it’s getting difficult to try and keep it all together. The first timeline is the new one, established when Daniel’s plan worked and the island was blown apart.
In this world, Flight 815 does not crash and lands safely in LA. What is so interesting here is that while our Losties are, in essence, the same, there are some differences. Boone leaves Shannon in Australia, Locke goes on his walkabout, Charlie gets arrested, Hurley’s luck seems to have changed and Sayid seems to be in a relationship with Nadia. Sawyer seems to have changed as well – warning Hurley against telling people that he won the lottery. Things don’t seem to have changed for Kate or Jack or Bernard and Rose or Sun and Jin.
While the concept of alternate realities/timelines makes perfect logical sense to me, I don’t know how I feel about it. We knew that there could not be a paradox, as we were told by Damon and Cuse that there would not be... so all that is left is an alternate timeline. Like I said, perfect logical sense... In my own opinion, I still believe that all events are eventually going to lead to these guys somehow ending up on that island – no matter what reality or timeline they are in.
It will be interesting to see life for the Losties in this new timeline though. I’m really keen to see how everything has impacted their lives.
• Another really important revelation is that Monster-Locke (or Man-in-Black) is the smoke monster. Ok, so most of us already either worked this one out or assumed it the case. It’s nice to see confirmation of it though.
I remember Danielle saying that the monster was the island’s security system, and while Ben reported to Jacob, he was able to summon ole Smokey at times. Very interesting. Was the Man-in-Black somehow “forced” under Jacob’s rule and that is why he was so determined to kill him? I never really thought about it before until now – somehow I just assumed that they were equals in the S5 finale. I hope we get more revelations on this relationship between them and on exactly who or what Jacob is/was and exactly who/what Man-in-Black is as well.
• The third key point is that our Losties are still on the island sometime after the blast. This is also new territory as we don’t know what’s going to happen here as well. Jacob the Ghost says that they cannot let Sayid die... Why? I mean, yes,of course I don’t want Sayid to die, but would would Jacob not want it?? Anyone else the feeling that this game that Jacob and Monster-dude are playing is so not over?
Anyway, that’s all I have for you now.
New Questions this week:• What’s going to happen with all these timelines?? Do they merge, do they go along on their separate paths??
• Will Monster-Man kill Richard??
Questions Answered this week:• We know know what happened when Juliet detonate the bomb
• We know that Monster-Locke is the smoke monster who is Man-in-Black.

•Boone is sitting in the same row as Locke. This was not the case in the original flight.
•The Swan implosion crater is very different from previous versions in past seasons. It is much wider, less deep, easier to get into, and has a pile of junk in the center where the anomaly attracted it.
• Sayid's passport, shown at LAX, is an Iranian passport instead of being Iraqi.
•Haroun and the Sea of Stories: Desmond is reading this book by British Indian writer Salman Rushdie. It is an eerie story set in a city so old and ruinous that it can't remember its name
