What Kate does

Now, do I really care what Kate does? The answer is no, I really couldn’t be bothered. In six seasons of Lost, I have never warmed to Kate and I very much doubt I will. For me, Kate is just someone who always seems to have an ulterior motive. Yes, fair enough, she has her moments... but ultimately, I just think that Kate is the kind of person who looks out for herself first.

Anyway, this week’s recap is as follows:

In the alternate/new timeline, Kate now commandeers a taxi. After making the driver drive over Artz’s luggage, the driver escapes (the wimp!) leaving Kate with Claire. Claire also manages to escape and Kate goes off to get her handcuffs removed. She looks in Claire’s bag, and realises that Claire is pregnant and suddenly feels all bad.

She goes back to find Claire and offer her a lift...and Claire accepts!! They go to the house of the couple who is supposed to adopt Claire’s baby, but learn that the woman is now alone as her husband left her. She can no longer adopt the baby. Claire starts having contractions and Kate races her to the hospital.

Doctor Ethan Goodspeed asks Claire if she’s ready to have her baby and she says no. They prepare to slow the process down with drugs, but when they lose the baby’s heartbeat, Claire wants to know if Aaron is ok. An ultrasound shows that he is.

Later, two policemen question Claire about Kate, while Kate hides out in an adjoining room. Claire covers for her, and before Kate leaves, Claire gives Kate her credit card.

In the jungle timeline, Sayid recovers from being dead. Japanese Man is called in and they take Sayid away, but not before Sawyer manages to escape and warns Kate not to try and find him. Sayid is then tortured by Japanese Man, and when asked why, he is told that he was being tested and should not worry as he passed the test.

Once Sayid is taken back to the Losties, Jackass goes to Japanese Man and demands answers. Japanese Man tells him that they were “diagnosing” Sayid and that Sayid is infected. He gives Jackass a pill and asks Jackass to get Sayid to take it.

Jackass repeats all that to Sayid. Sayid says that he trusts Jackass and if Jackass tells him to take the pill, he will. Jackass goes back to Japanese Man and demands answers. When none are forthcoming, Jackass swallows the pill. Japanese Man manages to stop Jackass from ingesting the pill and Jackass coughs it up. Japanese Man admits that it is poison.

He also tells Jackass that his name is Dogen and that he was brought there to the island like everyone else. He says that Sayid has been “claimed” and that a darkness in growing in Sayid. When it reaches his heart, Sayid will be lost. He tells Jackass he knows this because it is the same thing that happened to Jackass’s sister.

Meanwhile, Kate and Jin go off with two Others to look for Sawyer. They manage to knock the Others out cold and escape. They separate – Kate goes to look for Sawyer and Jin for Sun. Kate tracks Sawyer to Otherville, to the cottage he shared with Juliet.

There, she observes him as he removes something from a box that he’s retrieved from under the floorboards. Sawyer is quite upset and she leaves almost quietly, but Sawyer hears her. Later, they are sitting at the jetty. Kate explains that she came to the island to find Claire and take her back to Aaron.

An incredibly emotional Sawyer tells her that it’s his fault that Juliet died. He stopped her from going on that sub because he was lonely. He also reveals that he was going to ask Juliet to marry him. He throws the ring into the water and tells Kate she can make it back to the temple by nightfall and walks away. Kate has a moment and breaks down and cries.

Jin is attacked again by the two Others, but runs off only to have his leg caught in a trap. He is rescued by Claire who shoots the Others.

Key Points this week:

• Claire is back! And she’s back in both the jungle and also in the new timeline. It’s good to see Claire again, although I do have concerns about her sanity. In the new timeline, she not only gets back into the taxi with Kate after Kate pretty much hijacked her, she also “befriends” Kate. What the hell?? Why would you do that?? Interesting. And she also names her baby Aaron and creepy Ethan is her doctor.

This further drives home something I truly believe about our Losties – their lives are so intertwined that even in this alternate reality, they cannot escape their destinies. I also believe that regardless of what happens in this timeline, they are somehow going to end up on that island. How, you may ask, considering that the island is completely submerged under water. No idea. But I’m still going with it.

On the island, Claire seems to have been transformed into Danielle – wild hair, wild look about her, setting traps and shooting Others. And then there’s the revelation that she’d been “infected” or claimed. Hmmm. Is it possible that Danielle was “infected” too and then saved by the Others? How would she know about the “infection” otherwise?

• So now Sayid is “infected” or claimed... that’s if Dogen can be believed. And I do believe him, and it’s got nothing to do with him. Cast your minds back to when Claire first disappeared. Miles was looking at her all funny – almost exactly the way he’s looking at Sayid now. His ghostbusting senses are clearly picking something up.

I must also say that I found Sayid’s pleading with the Others not to torture him very uncharacteristic. Sayid was a torturer; he tortured and murdered many people. He himself said that considering what his past was, he knows that where he is going (after death) is not a nice place. I don’t know... something just didn’t sit right with me. I don’t believe that Sayid would plead so and whine so... it’s just very uncharacteristic of the Super-Sayid we know. Super-Sayid would have taken it like a man!

• Poor, poor Sawyer. How my heart breaks for this man. He’s guilt-ridden and heart-broken. He’s closing himself up completely – he reminds me a lot of the badass Sawyer we saw in the first season. Although I think now he might be a bit more dangerous as he may believe that he has nothing to live for any more.

I know I commented on this on Season 5 finale, but Josh Holloway’s acting is just superb in this. He absolutely nails it. I feel his pain.

Something I find very strange is Kate’s little breakdown. At first I thought that she broke down and cried because she feels for Sawyer, and that she is compassionate. But now I think I’ve changed my mind; I believe that she cried because she finally realised that she’s lost Sawyer forever.

Those are the major key points from this episode that I can think of. There are some interesting things going on and I am really keen to see. Hurry up, Monday.

Questions answered this week:

• We know know Japanese dude’s name is Dogen and that he was brought to the island.
• We also know that the Others are protecting the Losties.
• In the alternate timeline, Claire names her unborn baby Aaron.

New Questions this week:
• What is Sayid infected with? And is it the same thing that plagued Danielle’s husband?
• Does this mean that if Sayid survives, he’s going to turn into the male equivalent of Danielle?
• Why are the Others poisoning Sayid?
• Why is it important that Sayid take the pill willingly?? What will happen if it's forced down his throat?

Interesting Trivia (from this site)

• When Hurley asks Sayid if he was a zombie, this is an-inside reference to the running joke on the Official Lost Podcast that (the non-existent) Season 7 will be called "The Zombie Season.”
• The date on the sonogram October 22, 2004 is two days before Ethan Goodspeed, aka Ethan Rom, of the original timeline dies being shot to death by Charlie Pace on October 24, 2004 for trying to recapture a still pregnant Claire.
• Dogen has a baseball placed on his desk. In the TV series Star Trek: Deep Space 9, Benjamin Sisko, the commander of the station, used to have a baseball prominently placed on his desk throughout the entire run of the show. In the pilot episode, he used the baseball as a metaphor to explain the nature of linear time to the inhabitants of the wormhole, who experienced time all at once.
• Arzt shouts, "I'm walking here. I'm walking here!" This line is from the 1969 film Midnight Cowboy where the same dialog is delivered word-for-word by Dustin Hoffman's character, Ratso Rizzo.

Ag shame.  Poor Sawyer indeed.  I feel so bad for him.  He loved juliet.  I think that kate is upset because she's lost sawyer for good.

interesting point about sayid.  I fear for sayid.  He may not make it, I think.
