death-Lolly Jackson

How many times have you heard people saying “don’t speak ill of the dead” and how many funerals have you attended where everyone spoke fondly of the deceased, even though everyone knew that he/she was no angel.

I remember when my gangster neighbour was shot dead by police during a gun battle two years ago. He and his crew had just robbed a retail store, wounding one person in the process. He was shot dead as he tried to flee.

Everyone, including his family, friends and baby mamas knew what kind of lifestyle he led. He lived by the sword and it came as no surprised when he died by the sword.

I was however left in awe on the day of the funeral as everyone described him as a loving, caring, humble, God-fearing…blah blah blah person.

Hawu, I wondered, kanti why do people always lie when you’re dead. I mean, if they don’t want to speak the truth, then they shouldn’t say anything at all.

One of my colleagues was given the evil look when he said he was happy that Eugene Terre’Blanche had been killed. “how can you say such a thing” my shocked colleagues asked him.

So it was refreshing (lack of a better word) to read the comments made by the late Lolly Jackson’s detractors. I wouldn’t know if what they're saying is the truth or not, as I didn’t know the man, but the way they felt about him didn’t suddenly change when he died.

They “hated” him, dead or alive. These men obviously don’t buy into that whole “no speaking ill of the dead” $#@.

One of Jackson’s business rival Andrew Phillips who obviously detested him was quoted in the papers describing him as trash, a bigot, racist, extortionist and megalomaniac.

Said Phillips: “The whole world is buzzing about it. It's probably been a while coming the way he carried on. His attitude towards payment terms was: Ten percent down, balance in court. You make enemies of people that way. He always threatened people, warned them they were going to end up in a coffin. He lived rough and he's died rough.”

“It's a seminal moment. I think the world is better off. He was pollution, there was no other way to describe him. The air has been purified. He was a nasty guy."

I don’t condone nor condemn what Phillips had to say. As much as he might have hated Jackson, I think he should also remember that there are people that loved him- his family, who as much as his comments might be true, don’t want to read about it at a time like this.

So what is your take on the whole thing, have you been to one of these funerals.  were you one of the people that choose to “bend the truth a little” as you did not want to speak badly of the dead. Should we really continue our "hatred" of a person even when they are dead or should we just let bygones be bygones.

The article is not long to death Kakapana...its alright.

I have been to many such funerals were even the pastor presidng over the funeral lies about someone who was clearly not in good standing with society. I think in such situations diplomacy, empathy  and ubuntu are important when playing the analysts and we all like doing that.

Presonally, I prefer NOT to speak ill of people even when they are alive, nommater how bad they are. So the fact that i dont ever entertain speaking ill when they are dead is not out of fear that the dead will come back and bug in my sleep. I just think its distastefull to be picking at people's wrongs alive or dead.
Everytime i come close to speaking ill (about dead or living people) i think about myself first. I ask myself whether I am RIGHT at that moment and i start scrutinising MY life.
If there is nothing positive to say i would not lie, i know people do it and i dont get it. Instead of going on an on about the negative staff...id rather ponder on what the person's life should teach me in a constructive way. I just dont see the point of hating or speaking ill of anyone at all.....dead or alive.

Then in the Program there was an item where by kuzokhuluma abangani, lol then they call this Lady, geeez she said "i know her we used 2 stay together at Umlazi and besizfebela naye, siphuza naye sifesa naye so i know everything abwt her, i even encouraged her 2 go and test for HIV, and got her results bt she refused to attend classes, that is why eseshonile". Wow i asked myself that was it necessary 2 tell us the course of death... Tyo some people are so heartless.

Nice read KK.

well the whole concept of not speaking ill of the dead sterms from the belief that one should always have the right to defend himself. Sadly when you say bad things about someone who is dead they can not tell you that what you saying is not true.

On a religious take, one is believed to be cleansed of all his ills when he dies so to berate a dead person when he has been redeemed is counter-productive

On a personal take - There is something nasty abt beating a man when he is down. Why would u wanna berate someone who is dead? I'm not saying you should now lie and paint to be a saint BUT tarnishing his name by pointing out just how bad of he was just ends up making you look like you have bone to grind. Rather just keep your mouth shut, that person is dead berating or praising him will not change anything.

Well written indeed...Lolly was a very racist man,  hated blacks so much he never employed in to decent jobs blacks  except as cleaners and securities where they were not even allowed tips from the clients.
I once went to his club in Midrand with collegues damn,  i almost vomited of what i witnessed there, i felt i was in Hell.
He was a very cruel man indeed hence enemies are vocal and are spitting fire about his death.

And i beleive that when you have a criminal brother they will never show you their cruel side, they will protect  you and that's why most families when their ''black sheep' dies they wont speak ill about them.
The only poeple i hate are Pastors or Reverends when they lie about this criminal person and say he was God fearing, how can you be God Fearing if you can kill and rape?

Lolly, lived by the sword and died by one, his death is meaningless to most of us so if his rivals  want to celebrate his death, then They must Enjoy ......

i have been to one funeral where the deceased father took the speaker and told how indisciplined his son was, he talked on and on about things he did, stealing, in and out of jail, how the parents tried helping and at the end he just said - i hope and pray that my son will be a loesson to someone. my mother is always telling my nephews and niece about the guy. But it was really sad from the father's side because i could feel the pain that he brought into the family so - it dont mind if its coming from the family.

if i was a thief it should be said that i died trying to steal cables etc tl tl tl tl

he he

when in varsity we were crazy, one of my friends( they didnt get along so well but still friends  said if the other one died) , she will go to the funeral and if they put her on the programme to speak on behalf of friends she would just say "she was unique"  as people stare at her to contune she will just cry cause she cant lie and say all the things she aint. nami shame if obuleyonhlobo i would just say "ubekhona mngani  wami, engenye inhlobo" and start crying than saying all the not so good irrelevant things, if abantu bayagcwabeni wakho fo sho they know you so no need to lie about ngalowomuntu.
