LostSeason 6, Episode 605The LighthouseI struggle to find sympathy or empathy for Jackass; I really, truly do. He is so obstinate and irrational at times that it just grates on my nerves. But just for once, let’s hope that Jackass’s ... jackassedness will work in the favour of the Losties.
In his flash... err.... sideways... to his “what could have been” life, Jackass’s story is
slightly more interesting than ever of his flashbacks have ever been.
Jackass forgets to pick up his son at school and from the reception he gets at the school and at home, it’s clear that they don’t have a great relationship. Jackass then heads over to his mom’s where they look for and find his father’s will.
When Jackass gets home, his son is missing. Eventually he heads over to his ex’s house (she’s away and he lets himself in) and discovers that his son had something scheduled for that evening at 7pm. He finds his son at a music school where his son is auditioning. He meets Dogen whose son is also apparently auditioning. Dogen tells him that his son (David) is gifted.
Jackass meets David outside. Jackass and his son chat and Jackass tells him that his father told him that “
he did not have what it takes” and he doesn’t want David to carry that around with him all his life. They have a moment and bond.
Back on the island, Miles and Hurley are playing a game when Miles decides he’s had enough. Hurley goes in search of food, and goes into the temple and sees Jacob at the pool, pouring something into it. Jacob tells Hurley that he needs to do a few things for him and he needs Jackass to go with Hurley.
Meanwhile, Sayid and Jackass have a talk. Everyone seems to be afraid of Sayid. Jackass tells Sayid that the pill contained poison. Later, Dogen discovers Hurley in a passageway looking at the symbols. On Hurley’s hand are the instructions given by Jacob. Dogen orders Hurley out of the passageway, but Jacob appears and tells Hurley to tell Dogen that he can do what he wants as he is a candidate. Dogen mutters something in Japanese and walks away.
Hurley convinces Jackass to go with him by saying that “
he has what it takes”. They follow Jacob’s instructions out into the jungle. Along the way they meet Kate, who is not interested in their expedition (for once!) and is more interested in finding Claire.
Hurley and Jackass find Shannon’s asthma pipe and realize that they are outside the caves. Inside, Hurley ponders time-travelling and if they could be the two skeletons in the cave. Jackass also explains to Hurley about his father’s coffin.
They continue and Hurley asks Jackass why he returned to the island. Jackass tells him that he was broken and that he was crazy to think that the island could fix him. They eventually end up at their destination – a lighthouse.
Up, in the lighthouse, Hurley wants to move the wheel to heading 108, and asks Jackass to let him know when it reaches 108. Jackass watches the mirrors and sees reflections of buildings at certain times. When he investigates the edges, he notices the names, most of which have been scratched out. Then he notices his name and he frantically turns it to 23. They see a house in the mirrors and Jackass tells Hurley that it is his childhood home. He realises that they were watched and that they were played all along.
He tells Hurley that he wants to speak to Jacob NOW, and when Hurley can’t conjure Jacob up, he smashes the mirrors and goes off to look at the ocean and sulk.
Later, Jacob appears and Hurley tells him what happened. But Jacob looks all smug and Hurley realises that this is what Jacob wanted to happen all along. Hurley asks him why they couldn’t just smash the thing, but Jacob says that firstly, Jackass needs to sort certain things out and there are some things that you have to work out for yourself. He also tells Hurley that he needed to get them out of the temple as something bad is heading for it. He also tells Hurley that it’s too late for those left behind.
Meanwhile, Jin is having an adventure of his own. He’s rescued from the Others by Claire and she sets his foot free. She takes him to her camp. While she’s away, he has a quick look around and finds a cradle with what looks like a skull in it.
Claire returns to the campsite with one of the Others that she claims was just pretending to be dead. She ties him up and attends to Jin’s wounds. Then, she starts questioning the Other. She wants to know where her baby is. She’s adamant that the Others have him. She tells Jin that her father first told her that the Others have her baby, and then her friend.
When the Other (Justin) that she has prisoner denies knowing anything about Aaron, she says that the Others stuck needles in her and branded her. In a desperate attempt to save Justin’s life, Jin tells Claire than Kate took Aaron off the island.
She kills Justin anyway. When Jin is questioned about what he said, he tells her that he lied, and that the Others do have Aaron and that he’s seen him at the temple. Claire responds that it is good because then she’d have to kill Kate. Monster-Locke approaches and enters the camp. Jin is bewildered and Claire tells him that this is not Locke, but her friend.
Whoa! Claire is crazy!! It was pretty awesome seeing her in all her nuttiness. Gone is that sweet girl, and in its place is a woman crazier than Danielle.
Anyway
, Key points from this episode are:
• In the alternate timeline (or whatever it is) Jack is a daddy. Well, all that it is, is interesting. All these side-flashes
are interesting, but they don’t really give us any real information, do they? We’ve seen their lives without the interference of Jacob – or at least, with very limited interference as he would have died when they were all really young – and it’s interesting.
What significance there is in is these side flashes, we have yet to see. Although I do think that it is interesting that Jackass seems to be quite surprised to see his appendix scar. And the Losties seem to have an affinity with the other Losties.
• Now we know how Jacob spied on the Losties and knew what was going on in the lives. Or, at least, we think we do. I am still unsure of just who was spying on them and why it is that we (or, rather, the Losties) have not seen the lighthouse before. What if the Man-in-black is also looking for candidates just as Jacob is? Argh. This all confuses me.
I get that sometimes you do need to work things out for yourself. And I get that there some things that need to be done to give you a push in the right direction, but if Jackass was an obstinate man before, it’s going to take an earthquake to move him now. Yes, there again, you could say that maybe this what Jacob wants... but why?
And an idea that really appeals to me... could the mirror have been a reflection into the lives of the Losties in the alternate reality??
• Claire, poor little things is now totally nuts. I mean, Danielle was a nutter too, but Claire looks much more crazy than Danielle ever looked. I wonder if it’s because Danielle seemed to be wary of the monster too.... She kept her distance, if I remember correctly, so maybe she held on to some of her sanity. Claire, however, seems to have totally embraced Christian’s word as absolute truth, and then “her friend’s”.
Do we have any hope for Claire? I don’t think I do.
Now, normally, I wouldn’t mind anyone if anyone roughed Kate up a bit as she usually deserves a slap or two. This time, however, I don’t think she does. Claire disappeared and left Aaron alone in the jungle. What were they supposed to do?
This season is leaving us with some questions and some answers. I’m not sure what to make of things anymore. I’m beginning to think that I should stop thinking so much and just enjoy the ride.
Questions answered this week:
• Erm. We know that Claire is nuts and that Locke-Monster is her friend.
New Questions this week:
• Where has the Lighthouse been hiding all this time?
• Why would Jacob want Jackass to break the mirror?
• What is Someky going to do at the temple and why are the others expendable?
