Lost
Season 6, Episode 8
Recon

Any episode in which we get to see a shirtless Sawyer is a good episode. This week’s Sawyer-centric episode doesn’t go a long way in which we get many answers, but they have laid out the groundwork for what I can only assume will be brilliant in upcoming episodes.

Anyway, to the recap. In Sawyer’s side-flash, Sawyer is a cop and Miles is his partner. Miles sets Sawyer up on a blind date with someone who works with his dad – Charlotte. Sawyer and Charlotte hit it off and end up in bed together... but things get nasty when she finds a file labelled “Sawyer” and he kicks her out of the apartment.

The following day, Miles is really upset. Sawyer tries to explain, but Miles doesn’t even know about what happened between Sawyer and Charlotte – he’s upset because he found out that Sawyer went to Australia. He storms out after saying he’s not Sawyer’s partner anymore.

After watching some Little House on the Prairie, Sawyer seems to have a change of heart. He goes to Charlotte’s place with a sunflower and a six-pack of beer, but she’s not interested. The following day, he shows Miles the file and explains about Anthony Cooper. He tells Miles that when he finds Anthony Copper, he’s going to kill him.

As they chat, a car crashes into them – the driver is being perused by others cops. It turns out to be Kate.

On the island, Sawyer and Jin are at Claire’s campsite when Monster-Locke and his new followers arrive. Jin tells Sawyer that this is not Locke, but Sawyer is aware of that and promises Jin that if Sun is on the island they won’t leave without her.

Monster-Locke tells everyone they’re moving, and when asked what happened to the others at the temple, he tells them that the smoke monster killed them. When the children start crying, Locke-Monster promises them that while it was very scary, it’s over now and he will take care of them. He leads them all to a clearing on the beach.

At the beach, Sawyer and Locke-monster have a private conversation. Sawyer asks MLocke how he rescued these people from the smoke monster when Smokey reveals that he is the smoke monster. When Sawyer asks if he killed all those people, MLocke says that he gave them a chance to leave with him.

He sends Sawyer to the Hydra Island to do a recon mission. Sawyer’s task is to scout out the island and the plane and the people. MLocke says he has faith in Sawyer as he’s the best conman he’s ever met.

On the Hydra Island, Sawyer walks through the Other’s camp and sees the cage he was kept in. He finds the plane and drag marks in the sand lead him to a pile of dead bodies. He hears someone and gives chase, eventually catching up and brings the person down. It’s a woman who claims to have been on the Ajira flight. She also says that he was gathering wood and when she got back, everyone was dead. She asks a lot of questions and Sawyer figures out that she is not who she claims to be. But she is not alone and her people take Sawyer prisoner. They take him to the sub and to see Widmore. Inside the sub, he passes a padlocked door, and being the person he is, wants to know what’s in it. Obviously, they don’t tell him.

He meets Widmore who denies killing the Ajira people. Sawyer strikes a deal with Widmore telling him about Mlocke and his recon mission. He tells Widmore that he will give MLocke the all-clear, and when MLocke appears, Widmore can kill him. In return, the people who are with him are not to be harmed in any way and safe passage off the island.

When he returns, MLocke is waiting for him. He tells MLocke about his deal with Widmore. He tells MLocke that this way, Widmore will be surprised when they turn the tables and get the upper hand. MLocke is pleased with Sawyer.

Sawyer later tells Kate that while Widmore and MLocke fight over the island, they (Sawyer and Kate) will steal the sub and leave the island.

In other island news, Claire tries to kill Kate, while Sayid sits around looking completely zombiefied. MLocke pulls a hysterical Claire off Kate and tells her he’ll deal with her later – after he slaps her. When Kate is later sitting and crying, MLocke asks her if she’s ok.

He apologises for Claire’s behaviour, taking responsibility for it as he was the one who told Claire that the Others had her baby. He further goes on to explain that he had to do as it gave her something to hate. It gave her something to hang on to, and when Kate told her the truth, all that hate and anger had to go somewhere.

He leads Kate to the beach and points out the Hydra Island. He further tells Kate about his mother, who was supposedly crazy. He tells that that because of his mother’s illness, he has problems... problems that he is still trying to work through. Problems which could have been avoided. When asked by Kate why she is being told all this, he tells her that now Aaron has a crazy mother too.

Since I am already a week behind with my Blog, I won’t be doing the Key Points discussion this week.

Interesting Trivia (from this site)

• In LA X (2), Miles tells Sawyer he is not his deputy anymore. This has a double meaning, as he worked under/with Sawyer during their years as security with the DHARMA Initiative, but it is also a glimpse into the alternate timeline where Miles is Sawyer's partner on the police force.

• According to the March 11, 2010 podcast, this episode's title was intended as a double meaning. On the one hand, the Man in Black sends Sawyer on a recon (reconnaissance) mission to Hydra Island. On the other hand, the title can also be viewed as a pun ("to con again") based on Sawyer's past as a con man, referring to his alternate timeline counterpart's occupation as a police officer specialized in busting con men.

• Some Like It Hot: John Locke replies "Well, nobody's perfect" to Kate when she says that he is dead. This expression is famous for being the memorable last line of the Billy Wilder's famous film "Some Like it Hot" featuring Marilyn Monroe.

• A Wrinkle in Time: is on Sawyer's chest of drawers. Written by Madeleine L'Engle A Wrinkle in Time is a sci fi children's novel by Madeleine L'Engle (1962.) The story follows Meg Merry - a teenager who travels in time and space with her younger brother Charles Wallace and friend Calvin O'Keefe to rescue their father - who is a scientist being held prisoner by an evil force. Sawyer read it on the Island in the original timeline.

• Watership Down: this 1972 Richard Adams book is on Sawyer's chest of drawers. The novel is a spoof of humans searching for a new home using a society of rabbits as characters. The rabbits find what they think is utopia - but discover that it is a farm with traps and snares and they have to live together or die alone while establishing new rules to live. Sawyer told Kate in the original timeline that is was a "Hell of a book. It's about bunnies."
