Episode Title: Media Clamp
Teaser ...It’s a move that will see the end of press freedom as we know it. If the Protection of Information Bill is passed, it could mean the end of investigative journalism - no more exposés of corruption, theft or mismanagement.
It will give the government powers to classify virtually any documents. Journalists who use this information for whatever reason, could be jailed for up to 25 years, without the option of a fine.
Add to this toxic mix, the ANC’s proposed Media Appeals Tribunal. If this also gets pushed through, it will have the effect of allowing the ANC to decide what does and does not get published.
The question is, why would a ruling party with such remarkable democratic credentials, want to take the country back to the dark ages of media control?
