This Friday (24 September) Top History pays tribute to Heritage Day with a special documentary called Nelson Mandela: Man Of Peace.
It will be on 09h50, with repeats at 15h20 and 20h55.
More about it:
“I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die”
No one could forget the speech delivered by Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest icons of our times, from the dock during the Rivonia Treason Trial on April 20 in 1964.
Born in the Eastern Cape during one of the darkest times of South Africa’s history, Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela could have never predicted the impact that he would have on South Africa decades later, nor could he have known the change that he would bring to the model of democracy in the world.
This documentary takes a look at the life of the man South Africans know as “Tata and Madiba”. With racial segregation becoming more and more inflexible, he got involved with the resistance and in 1964 was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Stripped of his identity and reduced to a number, Mandela spent the next 27 years in jail before he was finally released in February 1990: The beginning of a triumphant return culminating in the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize and, a year later, the South African presidency.
The documentary gives us a portrait of a man, who, more than any other, has become a shining light in the African continent and, ultimately, a modern PR phenomenon.
It moves between the new South Africa and historical episodes from the country’s long road to ending apartheid, showing, along the way, the milestones and controversial moments of Nelson Mandela’s life.
Top History is on TopTV, channel 301.
