They've morphed from wannabee's to maybe's to winners to Nne-Vida across 13 episodes - and on Saturday night the Popstars foursome kicked butt in their first music video, proving that they have what it takes to make it in the real world.
The episode started with them reflecting on what they've experienced from the start of the competition, including their first auditions.
Our best recollection was from Oscar, who relived arriving at his first audition at 04h30 in the morning. Reason we faved him: he knows that girlfriends need to treated better than guys and actually
does it.
We were impressed when he explained how he froze his kahuna's off to give his GF his jacket as they stood outside. Every dude should give everything to their girlfriend,
all of the time.
While Oscar scored points, the others spoke about their highlights too and then got colour therapy from
Doris Msibi. She dressed them in circles of different colours and then expected them to guess what colour suited them best.
Needless to say they didn't have a clue and ended up choosing the wrong outfits for their music video. Only Zinhle chose well, revealing that she has a natural eye for style.
Once they'd eventually gotten their gear sorted, they started work on their music video, which was filmed on top of a building in Jozi. Part of it was filmed on top of the concrete, while some of it was filmed inside to a backdrop of the group's signature couch and one of those flashing strobe/light things.
Video director Kobus Swart explained how important the video is for the band's longterm success and then everyone spent their nerves putting it together while facing various challenges including rain and a dislocated Lyle knee-cap.
Which happened for one of three reasons:
1) He got so carried away and overly enthusiastic he popped his knee cap.
2) Kurt MJ Herman was hovering in his mad-dog choreographer role and put on
major pressure, which popped a cap.
3) A combo of 1 and 2.
Is it just us or have you also never seen someone on TV as psyched-up and focused as Kurt is? He must be
finished when he goes to bed at night.
The cool thing about it is that he has something that we see too seldom on TV - a sense of being so present, right
now, 1000% focused. He even talks in those kinds of numbers.
Too often we see people in shows who seem to be half-into things or give the sense that they can't wait for the show to be over but with him it's the total opposite.
Which comes through in Nne-Vida too. As the episode unfolded we got the impression that they really are tight and together. Lyle reinforced this vibe when he said that they're determined to live up to their name 4Life.
Day quickly turned to night during their video shoot and they were forced to make various spur-of-the-moment changes, which included filming the outside scenes in the dark instead of by-sun. As always happens when things go "wrong" it all worked out for the best and the darkness gave their video an added dimension of light.
They watched it together wearing weird Lyle glasses and seemed uninamously pleased with the result.
Here's a clip from it ...
Once it was over they said their final series goodbyes, with Oscar playing out:
"The worst thing to do is to give up on your dream. You shouldn't give up on it no matter what people are saying about you, don't give up. Ever."
