Special Assignment this week:
Episode title: Sex Sells
Broadcast date: Wednesday, 24 August 2011.
Teaser ...Last week the Sowetan carried a story of a prison warden that filmed his sexual escapades with a police reservist during office hours. The female reservist was unaware that she was being filmed. The video material found its way into the wrong hands and has since gone viral.
The Sowetan newspaper published explicit pictures from the controversial video on its front page. It has been sharply criticized for this move from all corners - women’s rights groups, media groups and family and friends of the woman who appears in the video. Yet the story remains a highly talked about subject matter in the public domain: should the paper have published the material? Was it newsworthy at all?
The Sowetan was reportedly sold out by 11h00 on the morning it printed the story. Is this the bottom line of tabloid media - that sex sells?
Special Assignment does a short insert with different views on the matter and debates the issue in studio with media experts looking at media ethics and self-regulation.
