Our free-to-air channels don’t have the best reputation when it comes to movies. The recycling of films we have seen year after year. There are those rare cases where we do actually see some really good films, and we hoping this year they will give what the audience wants. This is a list of films that I haven’t watched yet would like to have them screened on free-to-air channels this year. These are the top 12 films I want to see:
12. Paradise Stop (2011)
This film has five of the top actors/actresses in SA in starring roles. “Vusi Kunene’s character, The General, is just Jack Mabaso raised from the dead.” (carino’s review last year: bit.ly/zHz60O )
11. Step Up 3D (2010)
Step Up 2: The Streets is one of my favourite films of all time. From the reviews, it looks like Step Up 3D was better than the previous installment.
10. Fast & Furious (2009)
I’m a huge fan of The Fast and the Furious film series. I’ve watched the three previous installments, so as a fan it’s only right that I see every movie in the series.
9. Gangster’s Paradise: Jerusalema (2008)
It had one of the smallest ever budgets in history of film, yet managed to make more than 3 million Rands within a month of release. And the fact that am a sucker for gangster/crime genre…
8. Schuks Tshabalala’s Survival Guide to South Africa (2010)
Reviews of this film state that Leon Schuster made this a fun humorous offering for us Schuster-junkies. So much that Mrs Zille had to make a cameo in the film.
7. Skeem (2011)
This film won the Audience Choice Award at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival. The SA film industry is getting their international presence felt.
6. Notorious (2009)
One of the best rappers to ever grace Earth, and the fact that am a hip-hop fan is enough to make me want to watch this film. The life of the legendary ‘Biggie Smalls’.
5. This Is It (2009)
The greatest performer ever in the history of pop music. Enough said.
4. The Hangover Part II (2011)
I haven’t watched any film in the series, but from the reviews, trailers, word from friends etc this is epic.
3. Fast Five (2011)
The 6th highest grossing film of last year, the highest grossing film of the entire series and apparently the best as well. And the fact that ‘The Rock’ (for those who watch WWE) is in the film, it’s a cars and crime film. Need I say more?
2. The Social Network (2010)
The story of arguably the most famous social network to ever hit earth, it’s going to be interesting to see how the network we use everyday was created. And it was rated as the best film of 2010 by a lot of film critics. It won three awards at the 83rd Academy Awards.
1. The Hangover (2009)
Facts:
- Tenth highest grossing film of 2009 worldwide
- Won a Golden Globe award for ‘Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy’
- Mike Tyson made a cameo in the film
- Currently rated 7.9/10 on IMDb, with most reviewers giving it 10/10
I’m sure some of these films have been broadcast already on M-Net Movies, but I’m hoping SABC and e.tv will make us appreciate our tv licenses by screening at least one of these movies during the course of the year. Which film would you like to see on tv this year? Let’s keep our fingers crossed…
