Coming up on
Afro Café:
Episode title: Freedom Day
Broadcast date: Friday, 27 April 2012
Teaser:The year was 1994 - the country was on the brink of a major change in the history of South African politics. The tension and the excitement filled the air as millions of South African’s lined up the voting stations to cast their vote - which was more than just an X, it was a symbol of hope, a symbol of a better life for them and their children.
The one constant that always remained in the background was music.
Before this day music played a huge role in keeping spirits alive and giving the nation the will and the courage to go on. Tonight's Afro Café features various artists including Stimela with Zwakala - the one they call The Voice - and Vusi Mahlasela who performs his "When you Come Home" hit.
Hugh Masekela and Stimela talk about city migration while Letta Mbulu with Not Yet Uhuru which reminds us that the struggle is not yet over but that it has taken a different form.
The controversial Simphiwe Dana also graces the line-up with her aptly named Bantu Biko Street, paying tribute to a struggle icon. Other songs which provide nostalgic ambience come in the form of the late Jabu Khanyile with Malowe, Steve Kekana with the late Nana Coyote.
2011 breakthrough artist Zahara pays tribute to our struggle heroes as she sings Thekwane. The show also finds out what freedom means to a few of our beloved TV personalities.
Afro Café is on SABC2 on Fridays at 21h30.
