Last weeks evictees with Mildred MIA.
The disqualification of Zainab and DKB earlier this week has another dramatic impact: no-one will be evicted on Sunday - which fills me with horror at what we’ll be getting in the weekly eviction show.
With the evicted housemates stripped away all that remains of the weekly format is a yawn fest of endless dancers, quick interviews with the evicted housemates and comments from Twitter.
I’m really feeling that the show’s taking us uhdikts for granted, assuming that we’ll tune in weekly no matter how little the eviction show delivers. Which is true, we will - we need to see who’s leaving but it doesn’t mean that the show shouldn’t be upping the game each week to make things as entertaining as possible. The Sunday show's supposed to be
the show of the series, the headline attraction and yet it isn’t.
Things got so problematic two weeks ago - when Mampi left - that the show even ended five minutes early because there was only one evictee to talk to.
The overall impression is that there’s no special attention or planning given to the show weekly. Nothing changes, there’s nothing new nor different each week and yet there’s so much the show could do to be fresh.
These are 10 things I’d like to see on it:
1) Interactions with the studio audience.
Definitely! There are loads of dedicated people in the audience who are watching the show and yet they get completely ignored. They’re right there, waiting, filled with opinions and yet they never get included. Instead the show only includes people on Twitter - why?
IK should be asking the audience questions, engaging with them, asking different angles each week, covering the controversies too - not just who they like and don’t. “Did Big Brother make right decision disqualifying Zainab too?” “Who’s got the best strategy and why?” etc.
2) I enjoy the inserts they have with comments from people from the nominated housemates’ countries but they need to be contextualised for us and there need to be more. Who are the people giving their views? What are their names and occupations? Introduce them to us so that we have a hook into who they are.
3) Include “professional” perspectives from people in different fields who can shed light on the social dynamics in the house. Even if they’re quacks, I don’t care – I
want to be able to diss them when I don’t agree.
They used to do this on the show a couple of seasons ago - they used to chat to psychologist-types and astrologers who’d give insights into what was happening between the housemates psychologically.
Astrologers would look at their star signs and chat more about them - not that I believe in star signs, but still, it's a fun way of looking at the housemates from different angles.
4) A Fashion Police on the housemates for an episode or three. Who was Best Dressed this week? Who’s plunged into a fashion funk?
5) Camera-people secrets. Take us into the back passages of the show one week, show us some of the secrets behind-the-series. Hint at where Big Brother is. Give us juicy fast facts about the production.
6) Hit interesting hotspots of people to chat to about the show. Go into hairdressers, fast food spots, a gym e.g. use the clientele at a hairdresser for an episode - cut in views from the clients in between the evictions and other action.
7) A celebrity week with celebrities giving their views on what’s happened and happening in Upville.
8) A special insert on the prize money and what it would exchange to in each country. The show could choose a couple of countries where the money contrasts strongly and show what housemates’ could buy with it if they won.
9) Interviews with previous winners to see what they’re up to and who they think has the best shot to follow in their footsteps.
10) Stand-up routines by comedians about a specific aspect e.g. the house, particular housemates, Big Brother himself.
