3rd Degree:
Episode title: Justice delayed, justice denied?
Broadcast date: Tuesday, 12 June 2012
Teaser ....One night in 2007, 16 year old Charlene du Preez went out for karaoke with friends and didn’t come home. In the early hours of the next morning she was found on a railway line, burnt to death and dismembered. Police were called onto the scene, collected her body.
Desperate for answers, her family went back to the crime scene and were shocked to find evidence police had failed to collect.
Weeks later a family friend also went to the scene and was disturbed to find a hand, which turned out to be Charlene’s. The case was handed over to top detectives 2 years after the murder and they had to start it from scratch.
Today, Charlene’s killers still roam the streets. 5 years on the family is still seeking answers as to why police made such basic blunders.
3rd Degree looks at our criminal justice system and asks why we can’t get crime prosecution right?
3rd Degree is on e.tv and the eNews channel on Tuesdays at 21h30.
