Coming up on Carte Blanche this Sunday (17 March, 2013):

Smuggling Cars

Car hijacking is reported to be on the rise, with more than a hundred vehicles a month smuggled over the border to Mozambique by daring, desperate and dangerous criminals. Carte Blanche got onto the N2 stolen cab super highway.

Producers: Nikki Otto & Jacques Otto
Presenter: Chantal Rutter Dros

Mining the Pilanesberg

It was once hailed as an enlightened conservation plan - a corridor that would join the Pilanesberg National Park with Madikwe ... but that was before rich platinum reserves were discovered right in the middle of the 90km-long game corridor.

A mine already operating in the area now wants to expand to create an open-cast complex and put at risk a prime eco-tourism destination. Carte Blanche finds out who’s likely to benefit.

Producer: Joy Summers
Presenter: Derek Watts
Journalist: Susan Comrie

Sixth Extinction

The 15 metre meteor that crashed into parts of Russia recently brought to mind the Fifth Extinction, which wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. No prizes for guessing who and what will be responsible for the Sixth Extinction. Carte Blanche examines humankind’s destructive ability.

Producer: Neil Shaw
Presenter: Neo Motaung

Auditor General: 2013

R40-million odd on a provincial government website; R2-billion on consultants - the latest examples of wasteful expenditure and how taxpayers’ hard-earned bucks are spent by those appointed to act in the public interest. Carte Blanche found out what the AG and the Minister responsible have to say.

Producer: Nicky Troll
Presenter: Chantal Rutter Dros
Journalist: Chwayitisa Futshane

The Coldest Journey II

It was to be an icy and dangerous journey and many wondered if it might be one from which explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes might not return. But his attempt to cross Antarctica in winter left him frost-bitten, frustrated and only monitoring the expedition from his home in England. Carte Blanche brings you news of the first vehicular winter crossing of the frozen South.

Producer: Angus Begg

Carte Blanche is on M-Net on Sundays at 19h00.
