Moving Into The Academy

I'm sitting watching Project Fame. I decided to jot down my thoughts while watching because I have to be free for the F1 Grand Prix that's on later, and can't talk about this then. So it's on and it's quite fun, because it's almost like Big Brother. The contestants who've been chosen are going into The Academy.

And right now someone says she's going to be The Friend in The Academy. It's Robyn. She obviously likes to feel needed. Heh. I remember her ... she's from the Natalie week, ie. Heat One. Robyn's gonna have to be superb to be liked by me, because it's looking like I've transferred my anger about Natalie onto her.

They've just spoken to the teachers and principal who've discussed the rules of The Academy. The rules are very immature and petty. No swearing in The Academy. The people are over 18 and they have to obey these types of rules? Why? No chewing gum either. And the way the teachers spoke .... the contestants are all students who are finished school and this is tertiary education almost. Yet they're spoken about as if they're 12-year olds. Tsk.

Mmmm ... oh I see, someone (missed the name - too busy listening) just got asked if they were gonna follow the rules ... but as if they really wanted them to say no. Maybe that's the thing - maybe they want them to break them?

Blond Jonathan has just gone in - he had a silent moment with an iffy joke - getting big headed will be his downfall, so he musn't be. He was followed by Didge.

... I had to get some water which means I missed something and now Tracey-Lee's gone in - they replayed her singing and it wasn't as bad as I remember. Steve is talking now .... mmmmm ... heh-heh. Sorry. I was thinking horrible things about him. He actually reminds of a Much Smaller Steve from the first Big Brother, which means I could also start transferring stuff onto him. So it's probably best I keep quiet for now.

I think my favourite is being featured now. Monica. I really like her. She's classy. She's different as well. Dreadlocks? From Zanzibar, Tanzania. Nice. I haven't seen him before - he must have been from Heat Three which I missed. He's lovely. Bodea. Ooooh - he's singing Bob Marley. He's divine. Definitely another favourite ... it will be interesting to see if he's all image or if there's something more there.

Wow - she's beautiful .... just went to get a cup of tea (very thirsty today) and returned to a female rapper ... Karen ... very interesting, because they're showing her perform and she seems a little bit 'affected' ... even chatting she's a bit snooty ... is she, or is she just confident? I reckon she'll rub some of them up the wrong way, which could be fun.

They're off to The Academy next. I'm interested to see what it looks like. But first it's Danny K. I really liked him in Celebrity Big Brother but his music's never done it for me. He's doing a number called Serendipity ... the whole sound of it is a little thin for me and sounds too much like the Beegees. There's no bass at all, I don't think. I like a bit of deep thumping.

Funny writing it like this. Not afterwards, but during ... it kinda suited this episode though because it's them going in one by one ... the two contestants from Heat Three are being featured and I'm concentrating really hard because I didn't see them perform. Jid'dah seems nice. I think it's her voice in the background. Very different. Emmanuel is really nice too. I can hear him singing too. This is a tricky choice ... I like them both. I won't mind which.

Alexander Forbes. The sixteenth contestant going into the Project Fame Academy is Jid'dah! Yay! It's nice, because I really didn't mind which of the two so I was a winner either way. They're both from Nigeria, so Emmanuel seems happy. Everyone is happy.

Vusi is in the Project Fame common room and it looks lots like the Big Brother house. Dunno why they're not allowed to play instruments in it. I suppose it's to force them to talk. They're gonna live like kings with their own chefs, it seems. As big as it is I would get claustrophobic though, because there are so few windows. They've just been into the dance room and there are no windows at all. They've got a super recording studio. Instruments, mikes, recording equipment. Very nice.

They're outside ... and it's like the Big Brother garden except it's much bigger. With an amazing swimming pool. I had no idea this would be so Big Brother - the only difference in this show is that contestants actually have something to do when they're in the house. Which is why the teachers are gonna piss me off, because they are Big Brother. A group of them. Oh God.

They're talking about the press a lot and they've cut to what they've called the paparazzi ... but only a small handful of the people there are really press. I spot one person I know ;) - otherwise it's mostly young, screaming girls. What does this mean?

They're going into The Academy now and they're looking around and the headmaster is welcoming them. They're gonna explore The Academy tonight ... and I think we're gonna see this ... and they're gonna be on 24/7 on Channel 37.

This show is totally weird. The reason I say it's weird is because these 16 contestants are going into a totally controlled environment. Totally.

*Watch F1. Think think about Project Fame. Get a bite to eat (Chinese: I'm taking Zen into my diet) ... return with Vanilla Coke ...*

I've changed to channel 37 and they're all over the house. And they're doing everything Big Brother contestants do on the their first day. Some in pyjamas, some are singing, some are chatting, some are drumming or strumming ... some are doing each others' hair. I find that soooo funny. They always do hair.

I've already spotted potential nasties, I'm afraid. I'm growing increasingly unimpressed with Jonathan ... he's on the couch with sunglasses on and trying just a little too hard to be cool.

Monica has nice PJ's. They're navy blue with bears on the moon. I know the design because I saw the exact pair in my recent shopping escapades. Mmmm - here's an interesting something ....Claudia ... she's sitting really close to Johan. One arm up, leaning towards him ... but he keeps leaning in the other direction. He's increasing the distance between them.

Steve and Tebogo are looking at CD's and Bodea is sitting looking on ...

They've got to be up at 07h15 tomorrow. It's going to be difficult to sleep, I think.

As for the show as a whole - I've thought myself stupid about it and have decided that it's gonna be interesting, mostly because of this very simulated environment the contestants have been placed in.

At first I got irritated with the teachers' bigged up act but now I understand what they're going for. I would like them to lift their level with the students a bit though and calm down on the school-granny-marm stuff. The guy who's in charge of voice (his name is RJ Benjamin) - he's got the right sort of idea, I think. I predict he might really challenge some people. I had a teacher like him actually. I couldn't stand him.

All in all I'm quite intrigued by it all. For me the only possible negative consequence of such a show could be for a contestant who, a year from now, hasn't become the musical sensation they thought they would become. It's just not possible for each and every person in this show to become a big star ... but I suppose the contestants know that.

I think it could be interesting getting to know the person and then seeing them perform. I definitely think audience's decisions will be affected by seeing them Big Brothery. I also think audiences could feel more connected with their favourites - particularly if they've watched them all week.

My two favourites so far ... Monica and Bodea.

Tell me - what did you think ... ? Did you think the teachers overdid their act? How will you be watching? Do you think the relationships and what happens between people could become genuinely interesting? What will the contestants become more famous for - their singing or who they are?

Hot goss thoughts please!
