As predicted Bayo is the loose cannon. Many of the Big Brother housemates have started talking about him, particularly after a couple of incidents with radio DJ Sammi.
Thing is - these incidents are quite odd. It's like Sammi and Bayo shout at each other angrily but deep down, somewhere, I can't help feeling that neither of them are really really cross. Is it just me whose kinda picked this up?
Bayo was insulting and Sammi pottered off to share the incident with Alex and Gaetano. The three snuggled up in a hammock (Gaetano in the middle - carrying main status) as Sammi kinda ranted on, in an Angry but Not Too Angry way, with Gaetano chuckling away.
That said, there is no doubt that Bayo's looking for trouble. He's arm-wrestled Alex and pissed off all the girls. He's currently having a barny with Warona, who says they should just pretend it's day one - everyone walking in happy and starting afresh.
What's the smile on Bayo's face? Is it delight at causing trouble? Is it manic ego-mania? In all honesty I actually don't know yet. Is he just trying to spice things up, or is he really a racing car in the red? The type who likes to cause trouble and ends up being an arrogant, ego-centric prick? Was Sammi's response an attempt to stop causing waves, or does Sammi also enjoy a good fight to pass the time?
I'm leaning towards 'arrogant, ego-centric prick,' but won't put my head on a block just yet. I wonder if I end up feeling this way towards him ... will Nigerian peeps be upset? Bayo comes from Nigeria. Will they think: "Oh, that terrible Tashi Tagg - hates all Nigerians?"
I've been watching all them SMS's that flash across the screen and many viewers seem to be basing their favourites on countries, eg. "Go Kenya go ... Alex bring home da pesa"; "This is Samantha and Neo from Botswana. Go Warona go." It's happening a lot and I've also noticed that Stefan is getting a lot of support from South Africans actually declaring their affiliation with him. What is that about?
Back to the topic - thing is, to judge an entire country on one person is absolutely ludicrous. Remember - these people weren't chosen by the United Nations. They were chosen by a production company, for goodness sakes. What happens if you do root for your country and the person from your country actually happens to really be a pig? Are you still forced to support them? Will you just accept the person no matter how they are?
What if someone you really, really cannot stand is a person from another country? Will you be seen as being 'prejudiced'? Basically what I'm asking is - is this Big Brother a competition between countries, or between people? Personally I think it should be based on people. Look, inevitably culture is gonna have an impact on what a peep is like, but then again so is their family history, their real life experiences and more. Imagine Richard's "Chucky" in this house now. What if he were the South African? Would it make sense to say he's representative of South African culture? Some of it maybe. The entire country? You must be mad.
I actually think this business of categorising and supporting the housemates according to country all the time is extremely problematic. We should be watching them first and foremost as individual people. If we don't, this Big Brother is gonna end up actively encouraging prejudice, instead of helping to break it down.
