Day 2: The First Night

27 May 2003The Big Brother housemates have been in the house for just over 24 hours and have spent their time so far chatting, eating, showering, jacuzzi-ing and receiving two very orange parrots.

Was I expecting too much in asking for a little variation here? Is it just me whose been ogling the screen in an attempt to feast my eyes on something a little more interesting than what's become the norm?

Thing is, I really don't mean to be a gripe, but why - out of all the people involved in this entire shebang - has no-one given us just a little something different?

These housemates have had two Big Brothers to have a think about how to make things entertaining for us. Did they not think about this before they went into the house? Did they never once say: "Wow - you know, perhaps if I tried such and such I may just create some fun?"

As much as Ilse-Marie got on my tits last year, thinking about it now she actually put some thought (albeit not brain surgery) into the whole thing. She had a plan. Things she had decided to do before the show, to keep us entertained. She chose sex by promising us the tv-definitive shag. She took a risk.

Why does no-one want to take the chance and actually take some kind of risk? Is it because they think we'll think that that's who they really are? Well, most of them say they are gonna be themselves. Completely themselves. But are they? No. They're not. Especially not on day one.

They are carrying loads and loads of thoughts in their heads which naturally affects the way they behave in front of the rest and in front of us.

Now, what would be really interesting is if someone went into the house and shared these very thoughts. What do you think? How cool and groovy would that be? But no. Every housemate who goes in thinks they must be a 'certain way'.

Imagine if someone went in who didn't want to have anything at all to do with any of the other housemates? But …. get this … what if this same person told us, the viewers, all about it? Explained how people were responding, gave some impressions. Would you vote them off? Could they win the game and never once be nice to a housemate?

Ah - what I'm trying to say is that the housemates could really try harder. Get a little creative. Then again, it's also up to the BigWigs behind the scenes, not so? I mean the latest task is once more a dance thing with costumes, where housemates have to dance when their music is played. On how many levels is this interesting?

Do we, the viewers enjoy hearing the same pieces of music over and over again? Are the housemates such excellent dancers that we are entertained by their excellent moves?

Any good entertainment involves tension of some kind. Where is the tension in a task like this? Is it when we go: "Oh they're looking tired, I wonder if they'll finish?" By now we know they always do. Finish, I mean. So zap! - all tension gone.

Ah…but I am a lone voice in the wilderness methinks. Look, I'll still watch the show. I'll still have a lot to say and will continue to ogle - it's just I really think things could get just a bit spiced up.

That said, tomorrow I'll be more accepting of the way things are and do some character studies on those I've been observing so far. If everything goes it has been doing - the main person of focus may just be Alex.

In all honesty my brain is bursting with ways to make it really kick butt but … ... I think I'll save all of these ideas for a show of my own.
