Too Many Connie Ferguson Mag Covers

She is their unrivaled cash cow and putting Connie Ferguson on a magazine cover make editors happy because they will not get any pressure from their respective boards.

Don't get me wrong, I love Connie Ferguson to bits but lately I find that Connie is on the cover of almost each and every magazine including those that are aimed at the White market. I repeatedly love Connie and I am one of the people who, every time there is a malicious rumour about her, quickly dismisses it saying until Connie comes out and say something, the whatever rumour shall be considered a lie. I am a fan of hers and unashamedly a groupie.

The Fergusons

Now, having said that, I just have to be frank about this even though I'm a fan. Connie is a superstar and there is no doubt about that. The South African media has propelled her into a bigger superstar and Connie laveraged on this and built a succesful brand about herself. Without the media, Connie wouldn't be this mega-star she is today. She has millions of adoring fans in SA and somewhere else in the continent.

Now, getting to the gist of this article: It seems because the media made Connie a mega-star that she is, they are using her as their cash cow for their declining magazine sales. A Connie mag cover is a guranteed best seller on the shelves but are we being fed too much of Connie magazine covers? Let's take a closer look.

The Wild stars
Publicity picture of The Wild from MNet

This year alone, Connie was on the cover of:
Real, I bought the copy just because Connie is on the cover and it was back in March. To this day, I will admit and say I still haven't found time to read the article. I bought the magazine out of the Connie brand loyalty and considering that Real costs a little just over ten rand, I just had to buy it, besides, I knew I would earn more brownie points with my girlfriend

You Pulse
The current issue of You Pulse is sold out because Connie is on the cover

Just last month, I again saw her on  the cover of You Pulse, the mag costs nearly R30 and I just said to myself, this mags are for women and I'm not buying this one because you will find I will only enjoy the Connie article and the rest is about how to seduce a man and female fashion spreads so I just said nay, save your $ Makisto.

Connie Women
Connie enjoys special covers

As if that's not enough, I walk to CNA on Tuesday to see what the mags have on their covers this week and guess what? Yes, you guessed it right; Connie Ferguson on the cover of Women and Home! I was speechless.

When one assess this situation, it is clear Connie is still relevant and appeals to the new generation of magazine buyers across all genders. But shouldn't these magazines give us a Connie break?

October 2010
Last year alone, Connie appeared in the Drum magazine for over 5 times including main features

Last year, Connie has been in almost every magazine aimed at Black people. When the news about her leaving Generations first broke, she was gagged but when her contract ended and left the soapie, she was free to talk. Then came the extensive magazine covers. It was the Move! magazine that first did the article with Connie dedicating it to her 17 years of Generations talking about Karabo's fashion, hair and all.

Drum October
Move! magazine was first to cash in on the Karabo's tragic 17-year journey

A month later, it was the Drum magazine. They pretty much wrote about what we read in Move! so I decided not to buy the mag because there was nothing new they were going to tell us. As I browsed through the mag at CNA, I could see the article was almost a duplicate of the one I saw in Move!

Karabo wedding
tvplus magazine also followed by doing an 8-page feature Connie send-off including a wedding exclusive

Fast forward 30 October and Connie exits Generations. The very following Monday, the tvplus magazine had Connie on their cover. I was like jeepers creepers. However, I was pleasantly surprised because the magazine had some exclusive news about Karabo's wedding but they also followed the Move! lead of talking about Karabo's fashion and hair, much to my dismay.

However, it isn't unusual for magazines to feed us same stories every now and again. How many of you have read in newspapers and magazines that Sophie Ndaba grew up in an orphange in Zimbabwe? I remember I first read about the story back in 2003 in the Soul magazine but once again, the magazines repeated the info throughout the years with True Love back in 2009 titling their Sophie cover as "An Orphaned Queen"! This, I just wanted to show that magazines sometimes lack creativity and feed us same old stories all the time.

Connie Drum
In 2009 and 2011 You magazine did Valentine specials on the love birds. In 2011, You simply reprinted the 2009 article

Then, You magazine this year (or last year) did a Valentine over on Connie and hubby Shona. Well, those are my fave couple and I bought the mag even though after reading, I felt they just simply repeated what they wrote on their 2009 cover with the couple.

Karabo
Archive pic from True Love 2008: Connie was on December 2010 issue of Bona magazine

Connie and hubby were again on Soul cover in February last year.

Last year in November, Bona magazine did another Connie cover which was meant to celebrate Christmast. I browsed through the mag at Shoprite and I just simply couldn't waste R8.95 on the mag because the article was a summary of what the tabloids wrote and the Exclusive interview Just Curious did with Shona last year. So,  there was no point in me buying the mag.

Shona
Part of the Bona article in December 2010 issue could be read on Just Curious. Bona published the articled long after Just Crurious cashed in on the Connie magical touch

Yes, we get it that Connie is a mega-star but can we get a break already? If I was also Connie, I would never turn down any interview because the nature of her job requires her to be out there. A good public figure never turns down an interview, even if it's from an unknown remote newspaper from rural villages or a campus publication because there are prospects everywhere.

Connie
Connie is a super star of note: Just Curious and TVSA, as well as many other blogging sites, were fighting to get Connie's attention when she left Generations.

Essentially, I feel that South African magazines lack creativity and are not able to create another mega-star. Yes, the media gave Bonang and Connie the superstar status but they need to find another promising public figure and make a superstar out of that person. No disrespect to my sister Connie but I am currently tired of seeing her on every magazine cover. Next y'all shouldn't be surprised when you see Connie on the cover of Sarie and Huisegenoot.

Pictures through the lens of various sites on the net. Makisto sends out his love to all the web content managers for programming the pictures in such a way that I can copy them.

Well Makitso I had the same thoughts as well & there were magizines with her on the cover that i ddnt buy since it's gonna b the same story as u say it...

Chris Rock in his movie "I think I love my wife" say "in this house we always eat chicken.. Chicken, chicken, chicken & I'm tired of chicken".. We r tired of seeing Coonnie.

Kodwa ke it's true what they say that when you are good, you are good and everybody will want a piece of you.

True Zvee, when you are good you are good but the media has the power to turn any person into a super star. They must now make a super star out of othe people. Kwaaaa at the Chris Rock chicken phrase.

Carino, Phela the English White market is also cashing in on the Connie brand so Sarie and Huisegenoor are going to follow lol

carino
20 May 2011 09:51

And you know, all the mags are still doing the very same story, over and over again, I'm sure uSis Connie is also tired of answering the same questions. Also, having exhausted the Karabo Moroka angle, one would think they'd have thought of profiling Marang already (or whatever her name is on that The Wild thingie). Mina the person I want to see blown into a superstar is Muvhango' s Thandaza. Naye she should start having some businesses on the side...like, sunglasses here, belts over there, a perfume on the other side and stuff...just so that she will be relevant.

makisto
20 May 2011 10:00

kwaaaaaaaa Carino. Yes I agree, Thandaza's equally beautiful and a professional. She must just give herself a break and stop with that CD she has been struggling to record for the past five years and go into business. I do agree that belts, jeans and watches will do the trick and she will also be in magazine covers every second week. Phela my beautiful sister Connie is indeed tired of answering the same questions as you say.

You have a point about profiling Marang Lebone. Though I only watch The Wild every once in a very long time, I wouldn't mind buying a magazine that talks about her new role but Connie the business woman, the mother, the wife, the Karabo angle must be buried already, we are just tired of it

20 May 2011 10:51

It goes back to the question, whether over exposure is good or bad for the brand, this reminds me of a debate around Trevor Noah when he did Cell C ads while he was promoting other brands, some feel overexposure reduces the value of the brand while others think a career in arts or media has a short life span, there is always someone waiting to replace you, so it is wise to make the most of it while you can

Makisto, do they get paid to appear on the cover?

VusiK
20 May 2011 10:53

@poshspice ....The photographer gets paid ... the waiver is important regarding who owns copyright ... it is the copyright's owner who gets paid ... sometimes, the publisher has copyright ...

makisto
20 May 2011 11:02

Makisto, do they get paid to appear on the cover?
Musicians, actors and many other people are not paid to appear on magazine covers. Once there was a soapie star who demanded to get paid by a magazine for appearing on the cover and they stop the interview and the editor told producers and she was in trouble.

Howver, Drum magazine will pay a minimum of R50 000 to Dr Khumalo for publish his wedding pics, Khanyi Mbau got R750 000 from Drum for publishing her baby pics.

When it comes to children and weddings, star can get paid depending on whether your agent is a good negotiator or not.

As for Connie, she isn't getting paid for appearing on Women and Home, You Pulse, Drum and many other publications.

I didn't even bother to open Drum this week but I saw Sonia Sedibe is talking about her new baby. Chances are, there are no baby pics in the mag because the magazine didn't wanna pay her for her baby's pictures.

The photographer gets paid
True VusiK, i.e Gallo images takes pictures of people, don't pay them and sell the pictures to other publications.

makisto

Drum magazine will pay a minimum of R50 000
Sorry, that should b R500 000

poshspice
20 May 2011 11:08

@VusiK & Makisto tx, interesting.......so the only benefit to them is the exposure of 'Brand Connie' or 'Brand Sonia'  which keeps them relevant  and attract more work for them

VusiK
20 May 2011 11:13

One has to be careful about exposure ... over-saturation kills value ... it is generally better to engage what is called "Controlled emission" ... which essentially is to expose one's brand to generate maximum results in building that brand .... A trick whites know a lot better than blacks ... principally because they have excellent managers and actually exercise their choices based on quantifiable result instead of abstracts ... it is a science...

Makisto "Howver, Drum magazine will pay a minimum of R50000 to Dr Khumalo for publish his wedding pics, Khanyi Mbau got R750 000 from Drum for publishing her baby pics. "

wow, thats a lot of money R750 000 and 500 000 just for the pics....and then instead of investing it, they live large with no investments and die penniless!!

@Poshspice .... therein lies a massive difference in black perception of brand value ... Blacks will elect for fame over fortune ...

Who gives an F* what brands you got in your closet if your bank balance is on the decline ....

Get the money ...Keep it, and enjoy its benefits ...

The media will be there exalting your binging to the masses ...because that sells print ... they'll be there on your collapse ... because that sells even more print ...

People are like crabs in a basket .... as much as they want and love to see one rise ... because they desire such shiny things (they symbolize success ... whereas they may in reality be insurmountable debt), ... People love to see people fail more than they get pleasure at seeing them succeed.

reporting failure generally sells more print than reporting success ... but the symbiosis demands that the latter is reported before the former

makisto
20 May 2011 11:24

Yeah Poshspice, that money is nothing compared to the sales that Drum issue is going to sell and the ads is going to put in that cover.

Eish VusiK, as for me, I am not sure about the over saturation thing because one has to be out there so they should get more work as Poshspice puts it and it is true. Whenever I am home at 18:00 and decide to watch The Wild, the only person I wanna see is Connie and when they don't feature her in that episode, I get disappointed

and then instead of investing it, they live large with no investments and die penniless!!
Tell me about it.

One thing for sure is that you cannot beat nature. Some can eat anything they like and still not gain and some can gain weight. Bottom line is that you can’t beat nature but you can delay it from taking its course.

No matter how healthy you eat, if you going to gain weight then you are going to gain weight, what you do by eating healthy is that you are delaying the eventuality.

By no means am I advocating that you should eat junk food.

Not in Mzantsi ... I'd have to fly the steaks & the chefs in to cater for a Do ... my Do's range from small (friends) to large (friends & their friends), to extremely large (Family et al) ...

Maki will post the pic of the steak somewhere ... someday ...
Actually, I'll put it up on the latest article ... just for kicks!

it will continue until the buying public vote with their pockets.
i have never understood the excessive hype about her. I find her a bit boring and her acting is nothing out of this world.
The problem is that our society is too lethergic and unnecessarily romantic.
we just stick to the past and get aroused by playing around with it.
Even the journos.go out there and celebrate neew talents.
That brings us back to SABC et al.find new talents and bring them to the foreso that the media will have fresh faces to celebrate (Now i don't mean the Lunga type of mediocrity and nepotism you dumped on Selimanthuzi viewers!!).get out of your bloody comfort zone!!
If not for our romance with the past, there is no reason why Generubbish should still be on the screen and sane people watch it.
However, that might explain why ANC is sweeping the polls inspite of building open toilets (a crime against humanity). So it is perfectly understandable.

Tjo VusiK, that's the steak you talking about? Wow cool man, I like steak wena. But I am too stingy to buy it. I also settle for Chisanyama as GA states. But you know, I eat that every now and again when I attend functions and organisers are footing the bill, not me. Otherwise Chisanyama is my thing lol, plus there as GA knows, you get free pap lol (((((hides))))))

@Mbulela ...

For entertainment in Mzantsi to show and realize its true potential ... the greatest thing that could happen is for the government to get out of the entertainment business ,,,

And people wonder why I am delaying having a child...I know that I'm gonna be big coz my family is big-both sides. And the stuff abour the bone structure is true,I'm a 34 because of my curves,a 32 would fit me but because of my big bones, there goes my wish for a perfect 32. GA,lets talk about that soup diet, should I go to Pick 'n Pay and buy lots of cup a soup? Will I really lose weight?

lol @ Mbulelwa ... I don't remember how discussing Connie turned to beef ... Conversations are sometimes like cancer .. they migrate and change form, an affect different things ... You'd have to read the thread to figure out why ...

@Lex ... that bone structure it true .. and genetics always win...

@Mbulelwa ... it's generally my fault ... I hijack topics ... a lot!!! But that's the fun of things!!

@G.A ... I stand corrected on the origin of the restaurant's name ... I went and read it again ... I always presumed it was after her husband ... shows presumptions are almost ALWAYS WRONG!

The story is on the website, and the name Ruth's Chris was a result of a licensing and title dispute resulting from the right to use name in a contract ... not because of sentiment, but very practical and smart marketing...

it enabled her to distinguish her restaurant from other Chris restaurants ... hence Ruth's Chris ...

Ok so you lot,if you not out making me horny with all your nookie comments, you makin me hungry! Mncm! hmmm lol at how this started being about Connie and turned to steak! Tell me vus does the steak sase Zurich taste like African steak. I've noticed strangely each time i come to S.A particularly the chicken tastes different from what I'm used to. I remember even when Chris Brown came over to mzantsi he commented on how the chicken tasted diff. By the way, vusik how much is your negro behind worth! Flying chefs and what not! G.A sis i feel you erybody been tellin me how big I'll become when i give birth! Mxm! i always think -who asked you, nges'shwapha la! Lol! hey but i been on a weight loss quest. I'm down 7 kilo's in 2 and a half months. No gym, just better eating habits and no starving either! Makisto you must like u-my sister i woulda stopped on mag 1, whats the use, still the same person after all. Nothin new there. But hay, she's aging gracefully surely....

This little negro is not broke ... but still works for his living (I run 4 PE funds ... soon six) ... not yet where money works for me ... I have legacy issues right now ... Just started a Class A Family office to take care of my business ... legally dissolving myself as an individual ...

Zurich steak Tastes like Argentine beef ... which is where it comes from ...

Ruth's is all American ... and worth it ...

@Khabzette ... My do-s are not about showing off ... not bout photo ops ... purely about entertaining people I like, or wish to share an occasion with .. be it three people or 20 ... it's not about how much money is spent ... it is bout it being right per what it is ... be it  braai ... dinner, lunch .. whatever ...

I don't entertain guests at clubs for my do-s ... impressing people with how much I've got ... I'm very intimate ... and my parties reflect that ...

Importing a chef & steks is not as expensive as one might think ... only two ingredients are imported ... the chefs ... & the steaks ... everything else is locally sourced ... It would probably cost me less than 25k to cater a do for 60 - 100 of my friends with imported chefs from my favorite restaurant ... (the same as it would cost me if I got a local caterer to do the same ... the only additional cost would be air-fare ... the chefs would probably do it for free ... for me ... because I do build excellent relationships with them ... (Thanks to my particular expectation as to what perfection is in their craft)

It's not the millions people think it would cost ... that's tabloid fodder ...

Most people's concept of how the well-to-do live is alien from reality ... the wealthy are extremely frugal ... and they do not take anything lightly ... The big bashes one sees in movies are paid for by Corporates ... never comes out of the wealthy pockets ...

it is perhaps wise to remove the fantasy tht is shown bout how the well to do live from everyone's reality ... it may save people and help guide them to understand that the real world is different from the one on celluloid ...

BTW ... Jonathan Oppenheimer's wife drives a Toyota Tazz ... Jonathan drives a compact car ... and he is the next chairman of DeBeers ...

There is a huge gap between perceived wealth ... and true wealth ...

Forget how many covers of mags she's been on. What I would like to know is why she lightened her skin so much. Look at her pics fromm the 90s and the ones now. Why did she do that? I am only curious.
