Open Letter to SABC 3: Soapie Blunders

Dear SABC 3 content manager

I hope this letter finds you well and in good spirits as you prepare to kill our favourite SABC 3 soapie Isidingo.

I just couldn't keep quiet and you cannot expect me and a whole lot of about 900 000 loyal Isidingo viewers when you announce that you are moving the show to the graveyard slot of 18:00 to remain silent.

Cherel 1
Michelle Botes as Cherel de Villiers-Haines-le Roux

We know change is inevitable on our screens but as viewers, we cannot allow you to move Isidingo to 18:00 time slot. Rather air your tedious and uncreative Bold at that time or from 18:00 to 19:00, we don't care. I would like to advise you that moving the show to 19:30 as you did during the Cricket World Cup, was a good move, a move that should have been permanent.

Makisto and Tshepo
Isidingo continues to receive recognition. Seen on the picture is Makisto with Tshepo Maseko at the 2011 Saftas with Tshepo's Safta for best soapie actor for his role as Parsons.

Yes we acknowledge the show battles to attract over 1 million viewers, but as soapie critics, viewers and SABC TV licenses payers, we have always mantained that in terms of direction, cast, story linning, camera crew and a whole lot of other people who work hard to ensure this show remains quality entertainment and relevant, Isidingo is tops, regardless of what ARs say. This always shows very clearly year in and year out at the South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas). Over the years, Endemol, Gray Hofmeyr and Pumla Hopa, together with their team, have worked rather hard to always up the standard of the show and they are very successful at doing that and they have direction.

Sechaba Moloi and company
Isidingo Boys High School: The best in local soapie drama is only exclusive to Isidingo but all this could soon be history as SABC3 sharpens its knives to slaughter the show.

Now, you come here and make this blunder without proper market research and analysis. Yes, during the World Cup we were excited that the show airs at 19:30. By your own admission, this worked well and we as viewers were extremely pleased.

Keketso Semoko
Keketso Semoko also has a Safta as a best soapie actress for playing Ma Agnes. But SABC 3's blunder can kill the show.

It is understanble that you have fears about putting the show on the 19:30 time slot because of the competition that is Scandal. Let me assure you, for the past three years or so, Scandal has become something like a web of confusion. The show currently has no direction and I can't even tell you what their major storyline is currently. Therefore, I urge you SABC 3 to take a bold step of putting the show at a permanent 19:30 slot. Don't be afraid, we have already given you feedback. If you don't believe me, conduct a thorough market research before October in all our nine provinces and see what you find.

Chris Beasley as Len
Cheeky and irreverent: Chris Beasley does a stunning job for the role of Len.

Also, putting the show on the 20:00 time slot will work because over the years, we have always complained that at 20:00 we have no alternative show but to watch boring Generubbish.

Barker
Over the years, Robert Whitehead has received many awards for playing Barker Haines in Isidingo. His awards include a Duku Duku award and a Safta for best actor in a soapie. But SABC 3 is now putting this show on a graveyard slot.

I say this because in order for me and other viewers to catch the likes of Cherel de Villiers-Haines-le Roux, Barker Haines, Rajesh "Bloody" Kumar, Ma Agnes, Len Cooper, Sechaba Moloi and many other first class actors on this show, at 18:30, we have to compromise a lot such as speeding on the wrong lanes during afternoon traffic congestion (and sometimes we get fines from Metro cops), compromising on our gym time, running away from work during deadlines, all so we can catch Isidingo. Therefore, I argue that SABC 3, you have an obligation to meet your viewers half-way.

Rajesh
Rajesh "Bloody" Kumar: Jack Devnerain beat Generubbish's Sibusiso Dlomo in Saftas to win in the category of Best Hero in 2008 or somewhere along those years.

If you don't wanna move the soapie to 19:30, fine, but leave it were it always was: 18:30. We don't want to enter into a back-chatting match about this. This is in fact, an altimatum by which if you fail to consider, we may just come and toyi toyi at the SABC offices in Henley Studio 5.

We say no to digging a shallow grave for Isidingo and yes to 19:30 slot for Isidingo. We say yes to not continuing caring about The Bold and The Sex Kittens.

Oh, before I forget, Isidingo at 18:00 will have competition of the equally high quality soapie production The Wild.

Vusi Kunene
If SABC3 continues to be abnoxious, the arrival of Vusi "Jack Mabaso" Kunene will fail to achieve the show's producers' mission, i.e, that of getting the ARs to exceed just 1 million.

If I was Julius Malema, I would say you wouldn't want Ashley Calley to turn in her grave because of this and if she turns in there, you will have yourself to blame. But I am not baby Juju.

I hope you will consider everything written in this letter before going ahead with your hasty and stupid decision.

Kindest regards
Makisto

Thanks Makisto.
I agree. I loved the 7h30pm slot.

I didnt have to fight with my nanny about Isidingo or Rhythm City

someone- GA or Makisto, maybe even VusiK please write about the Ficksburg incident. I'm tempted to write it but it will be a very emotionally biased view.

Oh, before I forget, Isidingo at 18:00 will have competition of the equally high quality soapie production The Wild

Ive seen a few episodes of The Wild and im telling you now Isidingo cant compete with it, the show is well put together and it has amazing Aclass actors/actresses . So please dont change the time slot .

Also, putting the show on the 20:00 time slot will work because over the years, we have always complained that at 20:00 we have no alternative show but to watch boring Generubbish.
this might just work ......Bcos Generubish has become a bad habitt .

I also think it will be better for 19H30, i chose Isidingo over Scandal diring the CWC and i will do the same from October 2011, until Jesus comes back.

So i hope you will take this good advice or you are afraid of competion.

Thanks Makisto always

I unfortunately tend not to follow current affairs news broadcast ... I have a problem with the presentation of only bad things as "News" ... I would love to hear about good things happening as well.

The citizen has a snippet on the what happened. However, it is insufficient for me to formulate an opinion.

Tjo you guys, so many replies while I was busy posting the pictures. I don't know what's wrong but I had to post them 1 by 1 and that was time consuming. Thank yu guys, We cannot let SABC 3 do this to us. Phela the shows is not for them, it is ours. If they don't listen, we will do an Isidingo 900 000 Viewers March, modelled on Desmond Dube's 1 Million Man March. I will first organise with the government administrators about peaceful protest and all lol.

If they push us to do this, we are going to demand to submit our memo to SABC CEO and its board chariperson, co-received by Gray and Pumla lol.

Thanks guys. I just felt irritated that they intend to kill the show.

@GML, lemme do some background on the story, work a little bit and I may come back and write it. Even if it's emotional, you can write it mos GML. After all, it's how feel. Phela a blog is not news.

Maybe Genrubbish does need a bit of competition in order for them to get their house in order. I have since stopped watching it and have told my nanny that if she wants to watch it the TV in her room is working just fine. lol. Ya bora straight.

Where is that guy who works at isidingo who blogs here? Please forward this to the relevant person! 6 o clock most of us are not home yet! 19:30 the soapie competes only with scandal. Maybe moving it from 18:30 is a good move since there is 7de laan and Rhythm city but to 18:00??? NO!!!!

@Makisto.. 19h30 is a gr8 timeslot...I agree with you more than 100%..and...and even the 20h00 slot is not bad @ lot, considering that Generubish creator and all the team is really relaxing now..The reason we watch them is that we hv no where to turn to.. With Isidingo on the 20h00 timeslot, bliv me they will not even reach the 2m mark of viewership.

Nywe nywe, nywe nywe, "incidents like these make my dirty blood boil" Just shut your foul stinking mouths and stop being hypocrites, Black people!!!!!!!

If the same incident had happened during the White government, you would be in the streets already, burnign tyres and singing "kill the Boer, kill the Farmer" song calling for these policemen to be necklaced.

Now that this is done by the same people you put in power, the same people you will continue to vote for till you die nothing is gonna happen. You just gonna sit on your big smelly bums and vent your anger through blogs. I just wonder if 1976 would have happened if we had this blogging youth.

The what? How many people watch the Wild by the way? In case you forgot, not everyone is on Mnet.

Isidingo at 18:00 is not on at all but I would watch it since it's my favourite soapie.

19:30 is perfect, welldone Maki, i knew you were going to write them a letter but your forgot to send slap & kick. BnB, does anyone watch it, switching on your tv and starring at for 30minuts doesnt mean you are watching the programme, most bored pple just stare at the TV and the other thing is we are like 2/3 years behind, with all those re-cycled storylines.

I will greatly appreciate the timing, 18:30 my family love RC so being out voted i just retire to the kitchen. I stopped watching most shows coz they are boring,,,

If they put it at 20:00, that is stil good for me but until Mfundi & co. make major changes to the story lines, sham Gen is dead.

I awlays forget about the MNET open time 18:00 to 19:00.

I am not into Isidingo but changing its slot to 18h00 is flipping flabergusting ai..why do they have to broadcast some foreign soapie ka such prime-time....meaning they put more value on oorkant stuff than home-made ones.....

The Wild
has a mixed audience/viewers and apart from oDarkie 99.9%of the other races have DSTV ,dont get me wrong Isidingo also has multi racial viewers but more black people watch it compare to ither races #thatsallimsaying

I suggest you take a walk to ekasi ,you'd be surprised how many sharks(imkhukhu) have DSTV .
