We will not ask about the technical glitches or the mic story or the
unpreparedness of some presenters or the missing envelope or the lack of celebrity presence or hosting the awards the night before a working day. No we won't.
But...Before we even begin, I would like to ask one question - Who was the host of the SAMA
Awards? Was it the original plan or did this "hostless" concept happen to the SAMAs?
For a moment I assumed that the boyish-looking Zonke was going to host the show when she opened the show... but as sweet and soft spoken as she is, I don't know how that would work for 2 and half hours...
Then I thought that maybe Lootlove and Reason would be the hosts, but that too was not so. By the way, I simply cannot comprehend why they would announce the Best Rap Album outside of the televised show? Hip Hop is one of the biggest music genres in SA, so what's the deal with that? And oh... what do you call that on iFani's feet?
We waited and waited for the host and it was until Vusi Nova's eeeh... uuuumh... "random moment" on stage... that it became clear that this year, the SAMAs went for the no-host option #BigSigh. On the brighter side of things though... Vusi looked proper in this suit. See, there's always a good side in every bad situation.
Nothing stole the show like the #BoityRebeccaDress saga. It was bound to trend somehow. I swear... it was only when Boity mentioned Rebecca's dress that I noticed it was the same dress. I felt she should have just done her thang and not say a word... but knowing people, they would have spotted the similarity and had a field day with it one way or the other. It's not safe out there...
Since "the dress" stole the show, I started paying more attention to the other dresses and almost went into cardiac arrest, thinking we had a "number 3." Phuti Khomo almost made it a #BoityRebeccaPhutiDress saga. Imagine if her dress had sleeves... Lawd!!! And that pose ne...
"The dress" might have caused a frenzy but jelaous down it was a stunning dress AND clearly the boobtube, creme design was trending on Monday night and seemed to "work", but somehow this dress on Nonhle Thema just doesn't sit well on her figure.
Who sent out the memo and skipped other children?... Clearly this was the colour of the night, but maybe this outfit on Andile would have been more suitable for another, eeeh... "less formal" occasion?
Even Naima K's hubby and father to Heavy K - Danny K (apparently they are all related) made sure that wifey and mommy-to-be got the memo regarding the trending colour. I gotta give it up to Danny K, he always gets it right when it comes to his dress sense.
I absolutely hate it when bad clothes happen to beautiful people. How could Nomzamo Mbatha have such a gorgeous face and be dressed in such? I'm lost for words. She was definitely not on that list for the "red carpet trend."
I strained my eyes trying to figure this dress out but in vain. There's something happening in the hip area, but I'm still lost. Can someone find me and help me understand Mbali Mlotshwa's dress, please?
Mmmmh... I'm not sure how I feel about Tamara Dey's dress. I've got this love-hate thing towards it. But it's definitely an upgrade from her "interesting" dress sense. Mos def.
I believe we all need to be issued with licenses to love to hate Bonang. How could one woman get it right all the damn time and always maintain the elegance? It's just not fair... She definitely doesn't need to follow any trend... at all.
The Arrows never follow trends or stick to any theme or fashion statements... None. Not even at their own weddings... and you know what? Good for them. They must just continue giving us good music.
Euuuw... I don't even want to comment about what Kabelo's wearing... I just recall what a good SAMA host he was back then... Are those black jeans? Euuuw... lomuntu!
Did South Africa really wait for Lady Smith Black Mambazo to win their 4th Grammy before they could honour them with a Lifetime Achievement award? Eeeuuuw... Thank heavens Phuzekhemisi is still being honoured whilst he's still alive and in good health. Considering that there were no "WOW moments" this was the higlight of the night. It was insane how the auditorium was on their feet during these 2 performance and it seemed everyone knew the lyrics to Black Mambazo's "Homeless."
EVERYBODY SAY SCREAM BECAUSE THE SAMAS GOES TO... MAFIKIZOLO The SAMA20 belonged to Mafizikolo and I honestly believe they totally deserve all 8 awards. This aint no illuminati stuff, it's hard work and God's grace. Oh... where's Sis Rebecca to say "Praise
Gawd! God!" And their outfits were of good taste, particularly Nhlanhla. Thanks for the change of wardrobe. People were asking why did they keep on changing outfits... All I can say is that if you own the night and scoop 8 SAMAs, you have a right to change after winning each award.
And Zikhona's outfit though.. I have no words! #BigSigh
Earlier on in the day...The media had the opportunity to go to the goodie room to "view" what the presenters would be taking home. This year's goodie bag was worth a cool R20 000.
Well, well, well... I went there 30 minutes before they closed shop and I had no idea that I was going to be taking some of the goodies home... Not only that, I also got the opportunity to get my brows and nails done. Plus take home bag loads of candy. I kicked myself for arriving late, cos who knows what else I would have bagged... Lol.
I guess the goodie bag room experience made up for the fact that media were left in the cold for the entire SAMA experience. The media had to find their own accommodation, no transport was provided for travelling to and from Sun City, the media were made to sit in the upper stands with "extra-strongs," and they had no access to the VIP afterparty. Imagine?
Well... thank heavens to Lebo and Hloni from HM Entertainment for sorting us out and ensuring that we had accommodation, VIP access to the ceremony and VIP access to the official afterparty. You guys rock and made the experience worthwhile.
Also a big thank you to Dianne from Total Exposure for that VIP ticket.
Sadly, because a number of
celebrities and media people had no access to the official afterparty, meaning there was no scandal or anything to write home about, unless we missed it...
That's a wrap folks...
What did you think of the awards? How would you rate them out of 10?
