Replace that Actor

Sometimes when our soapies, dramas and comedies come back for a new season we see that a certain actor has been replaced with another actor to play the character that the previous actor was playing (sounds tricky huh? LoL hope I’m making sense).

Most of the time the reason for this replacing of actors is usually the death of the original actor, that the actor is pursuing his/her other dreams or he/she is busy shooting another drama or movie.

Producers of the shows are always left with the decision of whether to kill the character or replace the original actor with another actor.

When they decide to replace the actor people start thinking the show is not going to be the same when the character is not played by its original actor.

Often people don’t like this and it can make them not to watch that particular show again if this happened. I am one of those people who don’t really like the replacing of actors because I feel that it takes away that originality of the show when the character is played by another actor.

This is one of the things that makes some shows a flop. The youth soapie, Backstage is one of those. On Backstage they replaced a lot of actors when it moved from Cape Town to Joburg. Characters like Tendai (Dini Nomdumo), and Shaun (Clint Brink) were no longer played by their original actors.

Let’s take a look at some replacing of actors that happened in our television dramas, soapie and comedies.

On Home Affairs Nthati Moshesh played Thandeka. She played the character for the first three seasons of Home Affairs. She was one of the leading actors in the drama.

She didn’t come back for the fourth season. Baby Cele took over from her to play the character of Thandeka. I think the producers of the show chose a good actress that fits the Thandeka character to replace Nthati Moshesh.

Nthati Moshesh even said she recommended Baby Cele to the producers when they asked her which actor she wants to play Thandeka.

Vatiswa Dara was playing Gladys on Nomzamo and was replaced with Thembsie Matu who palys Sis Bee on Rhythm City. Vatiswa played Gladys very well.

When they replaced her with Thembsie Matu I thought she was a good replacement. I had no complaints that character also suits her as Thembsie Matu has played a lot of characters like Gladys.

Sarah Ngubeni played Parsons’ girlfriend Thandi. She was compatible with Parsons. I liked the couple. Now Sarah Ngubeni got replaced with Vuyelwa Booi.

That is the worst replacement ever by Isidingo. The new Thandi looks like MaAgnes’ sister. She is so big next to Parsons. Parsons looks so young. Now Thandi and Parsons are the worst couple. Isidingo should have gotten an actor who looks younger.

On Stokvel they replaced James Ngcobo with Hamilton Dlamini. I didn’t like that replacement at all because I liked the old Mojo. I even think that it is one of the things that killed Stokvel.

I only watched the season were they had Hamilton Dlamini as Mojo a few times but couldn’t continue watching. Since then I have never watched Stokvel even now that James Ngcobo is back as Mojo.

They really made a bad move. I liked Stokvel before and never missed it every Sundays. It was one of those shows that I looked forward to on Sundays.

Muvhango is a master of replacing. I’m not saying this in a good way. I mean Muvhango has done a lot of replacing more than any other soapie or drama that I can think of. I can count how many times one chacacter has been played by different actors.

This is how many times some characters have been played by different actors on Muvhango. Agnes has been played by 3 actors, Meme by 2 actors, Doobsie by 3 actors (the late Lindiwe Chibi, Khanyi Mbau and Khabonina Qhubeka), Masindi by 2 actors, Edward by 3 actors and Tumi by 2 actors (Lebo Mathosa and Shoki).

This shows that Duma Ndlovu doesn’t see any problem with replacing actors. I guess maybe some of the actors get unhappy with the soapie, then when they are already there they decide to leave. Which makes Duma Ndlovu to replace them since he has already developed a storyline around that character or it could be the other way round.

On City Sesla’s first season Pumzile was played by Busi Loraye who even won Best Actress in a Comedy at the SAFAs. The following season they replaced her with Thulu Thabethe who also played the character very well.

I loved Busi Luraye as Pumzile and when they replaced her I wasn’t happy but I continued watching the comedy when Pumzile was played by Thuli Thabethe and I loved too. She was also as funny.

I didn’t even miss the old Pumzile (Busi Luraye). Thuli Thabethe also won Best Actress in Comedy for playing that character. Then again Busi Luraye came back as Pumzile on City Sesla’s recent season. I think during that time Thuli Thabethe was busy with Zone 14.

Busi Luraye played the character good again. I guess the two ladies really understand the Pumzile character which makes its easy for them to play and nail it. So which Pumzile do you like?

Tiger Sibiya on Zone 14 is no longer being played by Owen Sejake, he is played by Patrick Shai. I think Patrick Shai is playing Tiger Sibiya very good as well. He is an established actor so I think it wasn’t difficult for him to understand Tiger. He even know how to talk that Afrikaans tsotsi-taal that the previous Tiger used to talk.

Still on Zone 14, Pinkie was played by Terry Pheto for the first seasons of the drama, in its previous season Pinkie was played by Thuli Thabethe. I must say shem even though I didn’t care much about the Pinkie character, Thuli Thabethe didn’t do it for me.

Pinkie was very boring. I think it is because I’m used to Thuli Thabethe playing the crazy character of Pumzile. At some point it was like she can’t really act. I didn’t like this replacement at all.

Zinzi Zungu was the lead actress on the SABC1 sitcom Nomzamo. She played Nomzamo for the first season then Ayanda Ngubane replaced her.

There are many replacements we have seen happening on TV. So what’s your take on this? Which replacements did you like and didn’t like?

If only they can replace that Ayanda character from Isidingo.

Terry was better than Thuli (Zone 14)

Loved both Thuli & Busi

Nthati is good, loved her more than Baby Cele on Home Affairs.

From Sarah to 7de laan *SMH*, Parsons o tshwanelwa ke Sarah.

Muvhango: Love the 2nd Meme, I cant remember bo Agnes ba bangwe (almost said other Agnesses), I loved Glen Lewis as Edward (I cant remember if he was good though), I prefer the late Doobsie (May her soul R.I.P), Shoki is a good actress.

nice read Cheesa!

Precious Simelane who played Nomonde was not replaced, she only moved to Generations after Backstage moved to Joburg, then presented Crux.

U forgot to mention Hlubi Mboya replacing Manaka Ranaka on Isidingo too :)

i personally dislike the Terry/Thuli replacement...

The new Thandi on Isidingo is the worst replacement. Who was the previous Meme? The Mojo on Stokvel replacement was also BAD. I watched one or two episodes of that season. I think these shows' producers should just eliminate the character when the actor is leaving...

Precious Simelane who played Nomonde was not replaced, she only moved to Generations after Backstage moved to Joburg, then presented Crux.  ohhh yahh Taz now I remember! I thought the Rami Chuene replaced her Nomonde since she was also joling le Duke now I remember Rami's character was Pearl. TA fo that!

U forgot to mention Hlubi Mboya replacing Manaka Ranaka on Isidingo too :) yeah this was many years ago I thought peeps might not remember hehehe, I remember that one.

Itjo Princess1 I didnt know Glen Lewis was playing Edward hayi ke Edward has been played by four actors nor wonder they decided to kill him finally. I thought Glen was someone else. That was the time when I hadn't started watching Muvhango.

Hao zvee Archie was never replaced bathong. Or I'm the only one who doesn't know this?

Who was the previous Meme? I dont know her name General. I think she was there no longer than 6 months then left.

@ Cheesa, a very good writing

It's surprising though with Muvhango, it was understandable that they had to replace the late Lindiwe wiith another actress when she was sick but when she passed on I remember Duma saying they have to remove the Doobsie character because it was written specifically for Lindiwe.

The problem with replacing Actors is that a developed character can make a replacement to look like he/she can't act. Remember when Eric Miyeni replaced Sello Maake-ka Ncube as Archie the guy was bad. but then again I think it becomes a problem when producers and the actor in question can't agree on certain terms like money or the actor/ress is unavailable. Then again with Ashley she fitted in very well in the Lee character on Isidingo after Sylvaine Strike. So I think it is a dilemma that producers have to face.

@Princess1 LOL!!!!!!!! other Agnesses it sound so correct though.

Thuli Thabethe was bad in portraying the character Pinky in Zone 14.

I loved both Manaka Ranaka and Hlubi Mboya as Nandipha.

Nhtathi Moshesh and Baby Cele loved them both as Thandeka

Ronnie Nyakalle and Zola loved them both as Papa Action

I also didn't like Hamilton playing Mojo, I don't have  a problem though with the 2nd Budget.

The thing that gets to me it's when they replace an actor because he/she couldn't act it makes 1 wonder how did they choose that actor in the 1st place.

@Princess1 LOL!!!!!!!!!! other Agnesses, it sounds so correct though

again @ Cheesa interesting subject.

@Cheesa...The new Thandi looks like MaAgnes’ sister, lmao, but you are not allowed to say it like that.

I hated the Pinkie played by Thuli Thabethe, she was really boring, that was a bad replacement, so happy she went to CT and may she never come back. I really liked the old Pinkie played by Terry.

I agree with you, Muvhange likes doing that but getting Ms Mbau to play Doobsie was kick in the teeth for me. Qhubeka did it well, i liked her and she looked mature enough to compete with Thandaza, i dont like Ms. Mbau's teeth,

Some actors are meant for a particular character and that is that. Imagine turning to Generations and finding a different Kenneth.

The likes of Tiger Sibiya, that is good.

True - Archie (Sello Maake) was replaced as Archie, but that was years ago.

I liked that Agnes who couldnt speak Venda, she was pretty and had an innocent look nje, which fitted well when she went to do the Domba. THis one eyi, am used to her now but, sometimes......

Kwaaaaaaaaaaaaaa @ the title. I think our shows are really lacking when it comes to creating hype around their shows especially if they replace actors. They can write press releases focusing on the new actor an dthe new actor's credits and also give info about the new season, but nope, they fail in this regard. Instead, it has to be the media telling people about the new actor and that only forms a fraction on any article. So yeah, publcists lack the creativity that they should have lol. Lemme read now...

@Cheesa i've got 2 witnesses already,lol..

U bloggers now reminded my that the Agnes u r talking abt wasnt the 1st. There was that one who was chubby and it was dueing the time when Glen Lewis was there too. The Agnes i'm talking abt was the one who was so madly inlove with Mreiks(Arthur Mofokate). She used 2 misuse her late daddy's money and she even bailed Mreiks from jail using that money.

Thuli Thabethe really cracked the Phumzile part. I say now is the time that she is given her own role not being made a replacement.

Is there anyone who remembers Tshepiso in Muvhango? She was Tumi's sister frm Mam' Doris (you must NEVER),lol.

Kwaaaaaaaaaaaaa

U forgot to mention Hlubi Mboya replacing Manaka Ranaka on Isidingo too :)
Because Manaka fell preggies.
People, is it  just me or what. When Dineo Ranaka first  burst on the scene, I also put her on her sister's shadow but now she went on to make a name for herself and when one mentions Dineo Ranaka's name, I no longer have Manaka Ranaka's nam ein my mind. Manaka seems to be fading into onscurity as Dineo comes closer.

So what’s your take on this?....................
The Owen Sejake Patrick Shai on Zone number mang mang and Nthati Moshesh Baby Cele on Home Affairs are great replacements that do justice to the characters. Producers must choose every Matome and Sello or every Mokgadi and Mokgaetji for replacements. They must think strategically and have rigorous screen tests

Great Article Cheesa.

I remember when Backstage moved from CT to Joburg, IT BECAME A DISASTER!!

I never knew the full story about that. Why did Backstage move in the 1st place?? Can anyone please shed some light, I used to love Backstage.

@zvee - Archie Moroka on Generations was replaced by Eric Miyen - It can't be, he was killed of the soapie. ( I think he had a heart attack or something ).

Me too yazi, she had no stroy anyway! So yah bye Pinkie....

@Cheesa i've got 2 witnesses already,lol.. Kwaaaa I'm hiding zvee...lol

I know the Agness you're talking about. She was very tjatjarag and I liked fighting for a man. Then she was repleaced by the one pjvv I think is talking about. I liked the tjatjarag one.

I remember Tshepiso but not clearly but I'm sure of the character you're talking about.

Tjo! Wena Cheesa, you are a TV boffin mostaan LMAO!!!!!!!!! ke ye couch potato LOL! I get embarrassed at times yazi its like I'm weird

I no longer have Manaka Ranaka's nam ein my mind. Manaka seems to be fading into onscurity as Dineo comes closer. True, whats up ka Manaka vele. She is a good actress I wish we can see her acting on something else besides Stokvel.

Nice article Cheesa.
Home Affairs - I didnt like Nthati's replacement by Baby,it was whack for me; even though Baby is an excellent actress.
Nomzamo - I like both replacements tsa Nomzamo le Gladys.
Isidingo - Parsons' new wife...the less said about that replacement the better. Nandipha's replacement was a good one.
Stokvel - I stopped watching, yes Hamilton is a funny character, but I just couldnt stop feeling like he was playing that character well.
Muvhango - All 3 Doobsies did it for me. Agnes was originall played by ngwanyana o mongwe so wa di curve tse di strong,a jola le Arthur Mafokate. I like Glen Lewis when he played Edward,he was very cold, but I liked his performance.
City Sesla - Replacement ya Thuli for nna,was not ayoba. I really liked Busi. Yes Thuli tried to be crazy, but she didnt cut it for me.
Zone 14 - Terry's replacement by Terry was ok coz Terry o mellow and Thuli was able to continue the mellow-ness.

@Anol@ u were probably very small if u cant remember this, lol. I think it was in the late 1990s or in year 2000.. I remember it very well, Eric had dreadlocks like Archie during that period.

Cheesa
28 Jul 2011 12:45

On the issue of replacing I dont know whether to say they should continue doing it or not because sometimes they get the replacing thing right. Sometimes it can be a complete disaster.

Like someone said above. I think its not that bad when its not a leading character that they're replacing. I mean replacing someone like Archie was just not on. I mean how do you replace Archie. Imagine Generations replacing Connie Ferguson with a new Karabo.

I think Duma Ndlovu got it right with Meme because Meme was still a new small character so people were not really noticing her then. So when they hired Tsholo people didnt really notice or have a problem with it coz Meme was still new anyway. I think it will be bad now if they would replace Tsholo with someone else coz the Meme character is big.

I dont know whether its better when they say so and so is going overseas than killing the character or replacing the actor.

Back 2 Business............. my thinking with this replacing thing is they must just bring a new person who wil do the samething which was being done by that other one..........eg......when kenneth leave gens they must bring a strong person again who wil continue being evil like kenneth but they must not cal him kenneth

Theoza
28 Jul 2011 13:21

@Vandimerwe I'm afraid  they might not be able to bring in a character that will challenge Seputla's acting aka Kenneth Mashaba the man can act the evilness that he portrays kuGenerations and if they think they will bring in Thomas to be the new Kenneth then Gen will be more dead than it is now.

Thanks Lex, Sobza & Vandi

But when they do what you're saying Vandi it becomes obvious that they are trying to replace the person that has left the soapie. Like when everyone thought that Generations is trying to make Dineo the new Karabo.

Even now with Nicholas people are saying Generations is trying to replace Mashaba with Nicholas. Which is bad for the actor because people will keep comparing him with Mashaba.

Cheesa, i forgot to say thanks for the article, i like a lot

If they want to replace Kenneth with Nicholas, they should have brought him in such a way that was interesting, not as an intern, who cant even pay Queen's R 100 back.

Home Affairs...Baby Cele was not doing so well because of her size even when she was dating that young boy it was not so nice.

Muvhango....Glen Lewis was the best Edward....That Agnes who dated Mreiks(Arthur Mafokate) was super cool. Tumi character was done well by both actresses. Lindiwe was the best Doobsie followed by Khabonina period.

Stokvel....Hamilton Dlamini was not cutting it at all yoh!!He made stokvel very horrible. Masechaba's(Dieketseng Mnisi) character at least it's much better.

City Sesla...Oh oh oh my my my Gracious Lord both Busi and Thuli were bringing that Phumzile character to live.I really like both ladies  that I laughed my lungs out.

Zone 14....Ya Patrick and Owen are also very good....Thuli did not do well with that Pinky character.I think Terry was a good one for that character.

Hamilton,nooooo...as Mojo..Love the old Mojo.....I also think Thuli didnt do well as Pinky at Zone 14

City Sesla...Both gals were/are perfect for the character

Home affairs...At first I didnt like Baby as Thandeka but then I started to love her...Nthati is a very good actress just like Baby

Muvhango...Too many changes happened indeed...Khanyi almost cracked the part ya Doobsie...she was too young for the soapie though...

PruLuv
01 Aug 2011 19:09

With Home Affairs, I must agree that Baby Cele, did justice to the character. I even forgot that Ntathi was the original Thandeka.

The original Doobsie left VERY BIG shoes to fill and unfortunately  took them to the grave. I know Khanyi and Khabo tried, but Lindiwe was one of the characters that irreplaceble. Like how would someone replace Stephanie of the Bold? See.

I would go with Busi on City Ses'la. She was believable as a ghetto chick. Thuli also did well, but Busi did it for me.

I didn't like the new Nomzamo. Neee

I don't think she is cracking it shem.

They should have just given the first daughter whatever salary she demanded. Akere they replaced her because they "couldn't reach an agreement" and we all know that means money. The first daughter has smelt success and now wants big moolah lol. Akere now she has a comedy show ko Mzansi Magic or some dstv channel

Haibo she was demanding a higher salary???  I thought it was because of the fact that she was put on call like abo Parsons and them. Hayi shem if thats the case she is crazy I mean who does she  think she is to demand a higher salary as if she's been in the industry for decades.

I mean Isidingo launched her career she should be greatful for that. On her first acting gig she got to act in one of the biggest soapies in the country that does not happen everyday. Haibo lengane ka President yini kanti O_o
