We've heard about many artists who were caught on drugs. The latest case of this is
Ishmael Morabe who is 39 years old. As some of you might know Ishmael was in rehab fighting his habit of drugs. He says it all in this week’s issue of
Drum dated 7 July about how it all happened.
He says he got hooked when he started staying in Johannesburg CBD 5 years ago. He was introduced to drugs by one of his friends at a club. He watched this friend sniffing and he offered him a line.
He says it was not like he was naïve and didn’t know about drugs. He decided to take that one line and he was hooked.
Like many other artists who’ve been on drugs he says after that one line he got that instant confidence and energy. He went to some club and forced his way in.
I remember Brickz telling the same story when they were interviewing him at another programme on SABC1. He even said he would throw money to people. He would just give them R100s.
Ishmael says since then he started using drugs monthly from monthly it went weekly from weekly to daily. He just couldn’t leave without using. He says he has lost a lot of money on drugs and many close friends because of drugs.
He says his habit even ruined his relationship with his American girlfriend,
Puff Johnson who has left the country. He says instead of being there for Puff when she was sick he was busy with drugs.
In a week he would spend R2000 on drugs or even R10 000 on a big weekend with his friends. He doesn’t believe that he listened to some of the things people were saying about drugs.
He says initially he was using ecstasy then people told him cocaine is the best even top CEO’s use it because you don’t get a hang over from it.
He says when he was at rehab there was a time he couldn’t take the cravings away and called his dealer but he cancelled.
He says he is glad he didn’t end up like some of his colleagues who died from using drugs, cause accidents, got all kinds of diseases or even end his career because there were times when he would be alone at his place and start sniffing cocaine hard. He could have died.
I can guess the artists he is talking about and drugs did affect those artists' lives hard. What Ishmiza is working on right now is restoring his relationship with his 15-year-old daughter and of cause fighting the habit.
He says he is now afraid about how his parents will take these news. He says his mom is going to beat him.
Well we can only wish him all the best in all this and that he completely fights the habit and do not go back to drugs.
I must say that this Ishmael disclosure about his addiction on drugs didn’t come as a surprise and a shock like it did when other artists like Mandoza, Kabelo etc came out about their addiction.
I think people are now used to the fact that drugs are part of the entertainment industry. I mean in previous years we used to get shocked when an artist comes out and says he/she was using drugs.
Still on this Ishmael issue I remember when Ishmael made a statement during RGB’s first season launch when being interview by Penny Lebyane about drugs. He said
“kids mustn’t do drugs they must give them to me” and laughed.
I thought he was just joking but it became a big thing and he had to apologise for saying this. Now I can't help thinking kanti he was really using drugs.
Here are some of the artists who were on drugs but now are clean and fixing their lives.
Kabelo
He’s been clean for years now and he is doing some drugs awareness campaigns. He is even a muruti.
Mandoza
Mandoza is still working on his music career and clearing rumours about him.
Brickz
Brickz has also been clean for two years now
I think and he is working on his music career.
Brown Dash
Brown Dash has been quite for years now after he came out about his drug addiction and going to rehab. Brown Dash said on LIVE he has an album coming out. We wish him all the best we miss his hits.
Well if there are other people using drugs out there, please guys yekani ama-drugs.
